In this blog we’ll explore the importance of project management in construction and how project managers can help ensure a timely and cost-effective build.

As we know, construction is a complex and expensive industry that requires rigorous planning, skilled labour, and a huge volume of materials. It is vital for all involved that each project is executed smoothly and safely while staying within budget. This is where project management comes in!

Why is a project manager required?

In construction, a project manager serves as a crucial point of contact, ensuring that all aspects of a project come together seamlessly, and the role has many responsibilities that will determine the success of a building project.

At construction sites, it’s essential to have a project manager to oversee the work, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure compliance with regulations. Project managers play a vital role in mitigating risks and avoiding costly mistakes. They keep everyone on the same page, help keep things organised and are responsible for the overall planning, coordination, and control of a project, from start to finish. These key factors all come together to achieve objectives while meeting budget and quality goals.

Each construction project is unique and has its own set of requirements and challenges. This is why it’s so crucial to have an experienced project manager who can effectively handle the complexities involved in managing a construction site.

A project manager in construction has responsibilities including; developing and maintaining an accurate project schedule, developing and controlling the budget, communicating with contractors, ensuring that the project complies with all relevant codes and regulations, and negotiating with material suppliers to ensure that the project stays on track. They are also responsible for coordinating and managing all stakeholders involved in the project, such as architects, engineers, construction workers, and other parties to ensure that the project is executed according to plan.

It therefore goes without saying that a skilled project manager is an integral part of any successful project. Their expertise and experience bring order to a complex and constantly changing environment, and so it’s crucial to choose the right person for the role of project management for any building project. Their expertise and experience will help ensure that the property owner’s project is completed, and their investment is protected.

With this said, it is equally as important for project managers to not only choose the right supplier, but to establish a reliable working relationship with them.

How can a project manager work with Edge Building Products to ensure they stay on schedule, reduce costs, and maintain quality?

Working with material suppliers is an essential part of a project manager’s job. The project manager must build and maintain relationships with suppliers, and it’s the supplier and project manager working together that will ensure that the materials received meet the quality standards required by the project at the right time and price.

An experienced project manager knows how to use data and analytics to identify where there may be potential bottlenecks or overruns in the supply chain. They can then negotiate with suppliers to obtain better prices, offer incentives for timely delivery or change orders to reduce overall costs. They can also work with suppliers in leveraging their expertise to improve quality control.

At Edge, we understand how pressurised the role of project manager can be, and we strive to make things as smooth and efficient as possible for our clients when it comes to purchasing from Edge.

Nothing stays the same for long, and the same is true for construction. Each year exciting new innovations are developed to update and improve the landscape of construction. In recent years, green construction practices and highly efficient materials have emerged as key drivers in shaping the future of the industry. These developments hold the promise of creating buildings that are not only environmentally friendly, but also highly efficient and aesthetically pleasing. In this blog, we will explore some of the top trends and technologies that are reshaping the construction industry.

1. Passive design and energy-efficient windows.

The Passive House – or Passivhaus – is an exciting alternative to regular home heating and insulation. Simply put, the house is designed to stay at a comfortable temperature because of it’s excellent efficiency, orientation, natural lighting and ventilation. Ideally, a Passive House would not require artificial heating or cooling, keeping running costs exceptionally low for the homeowner. Not only this, but the Passive House will also have significantly lower carbon emissions and energy consumption than a regular property as the house is generating and retaining heat passively.

If you are considering taking on a Passive House project, start first with the windows. Most household warmth is lost through the windows, but they are an important element of creating a passively heated property. When approaching your next window installation, make sure to pick units that have exceptional glazing and thermal efficiency. Our windows and doors team are here to help you find PVC and aluminium framed windows with excellent efficiency in a range of different styles. Make sure the windows you pick not only let the light in but keep the warmth in as well.

Top tip: Smart thermostats offer your customers full control over their heating system, with insights into energy consumption, to help them pick optimum times to schedule heating.

2. Renewable energy integration in green construction projects.

One of the biggest technological changes to construction has the development of renewable power sources. From solar panels to electric vehicle charging points, renewable energy is becoming a staple in new build constructions. Some truly innovative properties are going off the grid with wind turbines and solar panels to power their properties. These renewable energy sources are generating clean and sustainable power, reducing the household’s dependence on fossil fuels, and therefore reducing the carbon footprint of the property.

Harness solar: Choose a solar energy solution that includes highly efficient batteries which charge during the day, allowing the house to stay off-grid during the evening.

3. Using sustainable and recycled materials.

The construction industry has traditionally relied heavily on resource-intensive materials such as concrete and steel. While these are highly useful and feature a number of benefits, moving towards uPVC and aluminium can reduce the carbon footprint of the build. Both uPVC and aluminium are low maintenance and are highly weather resistant. They are less likely to need replacing, thereby reducing the wastage from a building. Additionally, both uPVC and aluminium can be recycled at the end of its life cycle and brought back into the market as a new product. Here at Edge we specialise in supplying uPVC roofline, cladding, guttering and window trims, as well as aluminium window trims, because of it’s excellent functionality and sustainability.

Recycled materials, such as recycled plastic, glass, and metal, are becoming an increasingly important part of green construction. Recycled materials not only reduce landfill waste, but also decrease the demand for raw materials. By embracing these sustainable alternatives, the construction industry can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute meaningfully to a circular economy.

4. Shop local to promote green construction.

When calculating the carbon footprint of a build, all of the transportation costs must also be included. That’s why as a builder’s merchant we are dedicated to working with manufacturers from the UK, to reduce the transport emissions of each product. Not only it is this good for the environment, but it also allows us to be a reliable supplier as our British manufacturers are not travelling vast distances to make deliveries.

Making use of delivery services from suppliers can also reduce the carbon emission of your build. Rather than many builders out on the road collecting parts, a couple of vans can visit multiple locations, dropping off the day’s building supplies. Reduce the number of cars on the road by utilizing our next day delivery service on your next order.

Did you know? Our lightweight uPVC products also reduce our carbon footprint as they require less fuel to transport than heavier materials such as concrete or timber.

5. Modular construction as a sustainable alternative.

Modular construction involves assembling prefabricated modules off-site and then transporting and assembling them on site. As the majority of construction occurs off site, modular projects are perfect for schools and hospitals looking to expand as disruptions to day-to-day work are minimised.

As modular products resemble a ‘flat pack’ system, many suppliers use recycled materials to create the modules. These sustainable, easy to install systems offer great flexibility for smaller projects, such as garden rooms, sheds, classrooms, and additional office space.

Remember – protect the building with low maintenance guttering and thermally efficient roofing, such as the Britmet Roofing Tiles, offering exceptional performance and style.

Final thoughts…

The future of building lies in green construction practices and innovative materials. New build projects are increasingly prioritizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and low carbon footprint. We strive to provide low maintenance products, supplied by local manufacturers, in materials which can be recycled at the end of their life cycle. Innovations such as Passive design, and an increase in renewable energy integrations are meeting the demand for sustainable and energy-efficient builds as we head into 2025. It is essential for the industry to continue to find ways to reduce construction waste and drive positive change towards a greener future.

Building Strong Connections for Successful Projects

Communication is the lifeblood of any successful construction project. From the initial planning stage to the final delivery, effective communication plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations, minimizing errors, and fostering strong relationships with clients, co-workers, and other stakeholders. At Edge, recognize the significance of clear and efficient communication, and we have implemented various strategies to improve communications with our customers and among our team members. In this blog, we will delve into how to prioritise communication, highlighting its importance and the positive impact it has on delivering exceptional results.

Building Trust and Understanding

Effective communication is the cornerstone of building trust and understanding between the construction team and clients. By actively listening to clients’ needs and concerns, we can establish a solid foundation for successful collaboration. Regular meetings, both in person and virtual, provide opportunities to address any questions or clarifications required, ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

Additionally, prioritising transparency in our communication with clients, providing regular progress updates and discussing any potential challenges that may arise. This level of openness fosters trust and helps to manage expectations, minimizing misunderstandings and potential disputes. By prioritising client communication, we can create an environment where clients feel valued, informed, and involved throughout the process.

Seamless Team Collaboration

Effective communication is equally important within our team at Edge. We believe that the ability to convey ideas, share information, and coordinate tasks is essential for success. This applies to our customer’s site teams too; implementing strategies to enhance team collaboration, such as regular team meetings, digital communication tools, and clearly defined channels of communication will definitely help ‘the boat go faster’.

During team meetings, encourage open dialogue and active participation from all team members. By providing everyone with the opportunity to voice their ideas and concerns, we can foster a sense of ownership and collective responsibility. Furthermore, utilising digital communication tools such as project management software and instant messaging platforms to facilitate real-time information sharing, will ensure that everyone is up to date on project developments.

Clear communication also plays a vital role in ensuring the dependability of team members. By clearly defining roles, responsibilities, and deadlines, we create a sense of accountability within the team. Regular progress updates and clear reporting structures allow us to identify and address any potential issues promptly, minimizing delays and ensuring that the project stays on track.

Engaging Stakeholders

In addition to clients and co-workers, effective communication extends to engaging other stakeholders involved in the construction process, such as subcontractors, suppliers, and the authorities. By establishing clear lines of communication and keeping all stakeholders informed, we can enhance project coordination and avoid potential bottlenecks.

Regular communication with subcontractors and suppliers ensures that everyone is aligned with the project timeline and objectives. It allows teams and individuals to address any concerns or obstacles promptly, reducing the risk of delays and ensuring the quality and timely delivery of materials and services.

Furthermore, proactive communication with regulatory authorities and local communities helps us navigate any legal or permitting requirements smoothly. By fostering positive relationships and open lines of communication, your team can demonstrate it’s commitment to compliance, which will build a reputation as responsible and trustworthy construction professionals.

Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful construction projects. By prioritising clear and efficient communication, teams have witnessed the numerous benefits it brings, including enhanced client relationships, seamless team collaboration, and positive stakeholder engagement. From the initial planning stage to the final delivery, communication plays a pivotal role in minimising errors, managing expectations, and ensuring timely project completion.

At Edge Building Products, we recognize the value of communication and continually strive to improve our communication strategies to deliver exceptional service to you, our customers. By focusing on communication, we build strong connections and lay the foundation for successful projects that exceed client expectations. There’s nothing quite like natural light to make a space feel bright, open, and inviting. Whether you’re designing a new home or looking to update your current space, maximizing natural light should be a top priority. Not only does natural light improve the look and feel of a space, but it can also offer numerous benefits for your health and well-being. In this article, we’ll explore how you can maximize natural light in your property and the benefits that come along with it.

The Benefits of Natural Light

Maximising natural light in your property is an excellent way to create a bright, inviting space while also improving the insulation and energy efficiency of your home. By using glazing, choosing the right type of glass, and incorporating reflective surfaces, you can increase natural light while also enhancing the overall look and feel of your interiors.

One of the most significant benefits to maximizing natural light in your property is the positive impact it can have on your mental and physical health. Exposure to natural light has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress levels, and even boost the immune system. Additionally, natural light can help regulate your circadian rhythm, making it easier to fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning.

Maximizing natural light can also increase the value of your property. Homes with ample natural light are often more attractive to buyers, as they offer a bright and inviting space. Additionally, energy-efficient homes are becoming more popular, and maximizing natural light can be an effective way to improve the overall energy efficiency of your property.

The Benefits of Glazing

When it comes to natural light, glazing is one of the most effective ways to increase the amount of sunlight in your property. By replacing solid walls with windows, doors and skylights, you can let in more natural light, making your space feel brighter and more inviting. However, the benefits of glazing go beyond aesthetics alone.

One of the key advantages of glazing is its ability to improve insulation. When you use energy-efficient glazing, such as double or triple-pane glass, you can prevent heat loss and maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. This not only helps you save money on your energy bills, but it also reduces your carbon footprint and makes your home more environmentally friendly.

As well as insulation, glazing can also help reduce noise pollution. Modern glazing technology can significantly reduce the amount of outside noise that enters your home, making your living space more peaceful and relaxing.

Choosing the Right Glazing

When selecting glazing for your property, there are several important factors to consider. The first is the type of glass you want to use. Single-pane glass is the most basic and least energy-efficient option and should only be used if no other options are available. Double and triple-pane glass are better options as they provide better insulation and can help you maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. However, they may be more expensive than single-pane glass, so it’s important to weigh the cost against the potential benefits.

Another important factor to consider when choosing glazing is the orientation of your windows. South-facing windows receive the most sunlight, while north-facing windows receive the least. If you want to maximize natural light in your home, it’s best to focus on windows that face south or west. However, keep in mind that larger windows will let in more natural light but may also be more expensive to install.

Another glazing option that will massively enhance the natural light indoors is to install roof glazing – our lanterns and flat glass rooflights are renowned for opening up spaces and making them much feel lighter and airier – proving another opening for the sunlight to steam through during the day.

Reflective Surfaces

Apart from selecting the right type of glass and orientation for your windows, you can also use reflective surfaces to enhance natural light in your home. Mirrors, for example, can help bounce light around a room, making it feel brighter and more spacious. You can also use lighter colours on your walls and furniture to help reflect natural light.

Final thoughts

So, maximizing natural light in your property is an excellent way to create a bright, inviting space while also improving the insulation and energy efficiency of your home. By using glazing, choosing the right type of glass, and incorporating reflective surfaces, you can increase natural light while also enhancing the overall look and feel of your space. Whether you’re looking to improve your own quality of life or increase the value of your property, maximizing natural light is an investment that’s well worth making.

Being an independent contractor has some incredible perks, perhaps the main one being that you are in control of your days, you can design a life you love without the restraints of employment. However, there are some down-sides to the self-employed lifestyle and independent contractor trade.

The construction sector is vast, providing ample options for those considering turning to independent work. Perhaps you’ve dipped your toe into the trade and have discovered certain aspects of it such that just don’t interest you, yet you have a skill and passion for other areas. By being self-employed, you have the freedom to accept and reject jobs that don’t suit your skillset or that you simply don’t enjoy.

Working as an independent contractor in the construction trade can be a hugely fulfilling career option but there are some things to consider before making the leap.

As an independent contractor, you have the freedom to choose your projects, work at your own pace and schedule, and enjoy the flexibility of being your own boss. Finding the right clients, managing finances, and staying competitive in an ever-changing industry are all challenges you may face. In this blog, we’ll discuss these and provide you with some tips on how to make it work for you.

Finding work

One of the biggest challenges of working as an independent contractor, (particularly for those who are just starting out on their own), can be finding work and securing contracts. Unlike traditional employees who are usually given assignments by their bosses, contractors must actively look for clients and projects to work on. This can be a daunting task!

It’s important to build a strong network of industry contacts, advertise your services on social media, and maintain a portfolio of your past projects. Registering with directory listings are a great place to start, signing up with Checkatrade, TrustATrader, My Builder and Rated People will all help. Local SEO is also important for service based business, so setting up a free Google My Business account should be a priority to help customers discover you when searching for a construction company. You may also want to consider partnering with other contractors or agencies to pool your resources and share work opportunities.

How do you stay competitive in a ‘gig’ economy?

Firstly, what is the ‘gig’ economy? For anyone who isn’t familiar with the term, this refers to the short-term and often last-minute market within which many independent trade contractors operate.

Much of their work will come from domestic enquiries requiring a quick fix for a singular problem, as opposed to long-term contractors or large jobs. With the rise of the gig economy, it’s more important than ever for independent contractors to stay competitive and relevant in the construction industry.

This means keeping up with the latest trends and technologies, staying on top of industry regulations and standards, and investing in your own (and that of your team’s) education and training.

How can you differentiate yourself from other contractors and position yourself as a sought-after expert in the field? Two great ways to do this is, firstly to build on your reputation through word-of-mouth recommendation….. people trust other people’s recommendations. Can you be their go-to trader? Work on building those relationships! The second way builds upon the first point; your marketing will be invaluable as an independent contractor just starting out.Don’t be afraid to show prospective customers the person behind the brand name. People feel more at ease when they feel like they know who they’re welcoming into their homes, adding a touch of personality to your website and/or directory listings/and or social media pages will pay dividends in the long term.

Tips for managing finance:

As an independent contractor, you’re responsible for managing your finances, taxes, and expenses. This can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not familiar with accounting and business management. To ensure your financial stability and success as a contractor, it’s important to set up a system for tracking your income and expenses, create a budget, and invest in accounting software or professional services to help you manage your finances.

If you haven’t already done this from the outset, you will also want to consider setting up a separate bank account for your business and establishing a routine for invoicing and collecting payments from clients. There are a number of online accounting software companies designed to make all of this easier for the self-employed or small business owner such as Xero and QuickBooks.

If you can, finding an accountant or bookkeeper from the outset is a great solution to ensuring you stay on track when it comes to taxes and the requirements of owning a business or being self-employed which can often be stumbling blocks for first timers.

What are some of the challenges of being an independent contractor?

Although working as an independent contractor offers a lot of flexibility and freedom, it also comes with its own set of challenges. For example, you’ll have to deal with the stress of managing your own business, maintaining your own schedule and workload, and dealing with difficult clients or projects.

Try to ensure you prioritise downtime, to switch off and recharge from the stresses of managing your business. Downtime looks different for everyone, but exercise or socialising with friends and family are good places to start. Additionally, since you won’t have the safety net of a steady monthly income or employer benefits, it’s important to have a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to your work to succeed as a contractor.

Ultimately, working as an independent contractor in the construction trade can be an incredibly rewarding experience, both financially and professionally. By taking the time to build a strong reputation, staying competitive and up to date with the latest industry trends, and managing your finances and workload effectively, you can enjoy the benefits of being your own boss and set yourself up for long-term success in the field. With the right mindset, the right tools, and a lot of hard work, you can make independent contracting work for you.

If you would like to speak to Edge about how we can help you manage your project time-lines, please do drop us a line at [email protected] or telephone 0345 021 333. We offer installation guides, payment options, delivery & returns, alongside a whole host of information and support for you, the trade.
