A Guide to Bi-fold Doors

Bi-fold doors have massively risen in popularity in the last few years, with many house owners wanting to create a more light open-plan and airy feel to their homes and provide larger openings for entering the great outdoors.

Choosing the ideal bi-fold doors with the style and specification to suit the needs of the property and its surroundings is critical to any building project. In this blog, we’ve provided a guide to bi-fold doors and all the features you should consider when looking to purchase for your project.

Bi-fold doors are made up of at least two door panels which, when opened, fold back against themselves in a ‘concertina style.’  The panels are joined by heavy-duty hinges and run along a top and bottom track using a sturdy carriage mechanism.

Benefits of installing bi-fold doors

Pros of bi-fold doors

  • Traffic door option available – this is a door that can be used on its own, without having to fold back the rest of the door leaves.
  • Wide range of options and designs – a large range of standard colours, plus the option to have your bi-folds made to a special RAL colour!
  • Can open inwards or outwards and fold towards left or right
  • Aluminium frames are lightweight and sturdy – they’ll last a long time, without needing much maintenance at all
  • Can be fully opened to connect indoors and outdoors – let the fresh air and natural light in!
  • Increase home value (internal bi-fold doors and external bi-folds)
  • Available with a low threshold – to aid wheelchair access, or simply to make it easier to step over the threshold
  • Internal bi-fold doors are great for temporary partitioning – ideal for office meeting spaces.
  • Work in a large or small opening – we can supply a bespoke size!

A couple of important considerations when looking to purchase Bi-folds is that they need space to stack inside or outside the home once folded. Also, having a high number of panes (door leaves) in bi-fold sliding doors can impede on the view of the outdoors – so its best to keep the amount of leaves to a minimum for the space you have to install the doors.

Configurations

There is a wide range of options when configuring the perfect bi-fold door. We’ll be able to design the door to ensure that there is space for the bi-fold leaves to slide stack when folded, and the correct amount of panes to maximise the view of outdoors, bringing in as much natural light as possible.

There is also the option to add a traffic door, for projects when you know you will not always want to fully open the door set. This means that only one pane will open, just like a standard door – and the rest of the panes will act as part of the wall, remaining closed and sealed.

Marine grade

If you live near the sea, or on the seafront – it is important to get your bi-fold doors marine graded, this will ensure that the salty sea air does not wear away at the metals and cause rusting and malfunctioning door hardware. Marine grading is also important for the energy performance and sealing of doors that are installed in properties close to the sea.
