A Guide to Roofline Products

There’s no doubt that a well-designed and properly installed roofline can enhance the overall appearance of a property’s exterior. But rooflines are often an afterthought when homeowners are embarking on a build or home improvement project.

‘Roofline’ is the term to describe the essential features that protect a house from the elements, and as the term implies, these elements sit just below the roof. They include fascias, soffits and guttering. The right roofline product can add both aesthetics, and more importantly – functionality.

Most homeowners will have heard of all 3 elements that make up a roofline, but some may not know much about what they are. In this blog, we will take a look at the different types of roofline products available from Edge Building Products and provide some tips that will help you guide your clients in choosing the right roof line products for their home.

What are the options when it comes to roofline products?

Roofline products are essential for protecting the home, and fascias, soffits and guttering all play a vital role in keeping the home watertight. Choosing the right material for the roofline is an important decision, and for many years, timber was the most popular choice. However, timber has a number of drawbacks, it needs regular maintenance, will rot over time, and it doesn’t have the longevity of some other materials. As a result, many homeowners are now choosing to install UPVC roofline products instead. UPVC is a much more durable and long-lasting material, and it is very easy to maintain, making it a wise investment for the long term.

Fascias

Fascias are the horizontal boards that run along the length of the roof and cover the ends of the rafters on a pitched roof. They help to give the roof its finished appearance, and they also play an important role in preventing water and other debris from entering the loft space, as they close the gap between the walls and the roof.

At Edge Building Products, we have a wide range of Fascias available, and we are a leading roofline products supplier. Our range including Square Leg Fascias, flat roof fascias, bullnose fascias and ogee Fascias. Each product comes in a variety of lengths, and we can spray paint our roofline products to any RAL or BS colours. We therefore give the homeowner the option of matching their fascias with the exterior of the house.

At our Horsham, Chichester and Croydon trade counters, we can also supply the required fascia accessories, including corners and joints.

While Fascias are not required for the structural integrity of the roof, they can help to extend its life by providing additional protection against harsh weather, and therefore choosing the right fascia product and accessories for the home will not only support the roof tiles and guttering, but also have the added benefit of increasing the curb appeal of the home.

With such a wide range on offer, we understand that trades people may need some guidance, and we are always happy to speak with you in further detail about the choices and the most suitable option for your client.

Soffits

Simply put, soffits are the horizontal or slanted boards that you see along the underside of a roof’s overhang. From an aesthetic standpoint, soffits can help to give your home a finished look by hiding the rafters and other underside details of the roof. Like Fascias, they also play an important role in protecting the home from water damage and pests. Soffits can either be vented or non-vented and serve several purposes. Vented soffits allow air to flow into the attic, which helps to prevent moisture build-up and mould growth, whereas non-vented soffits are usually made of a water-resistant material and help to keep rainwater from seeping into the attic. Either way, soffits are a necessary part of any well-built home.

At Edge Building Products we have every option covered. We offer both vented and non-vented soffit boards, hollow soffits and flat soffit boards, in a variety of sizes, and purchased as single planks. In addition to standard colours – white, black ash, golden oak and dark grey foil, as with our fascias, we can spray our soffits to any RAL or BS colour.

Guttering

While soffits and fascias both seal different parts of the rafter, guttering is the third important element of a roofline, and the one most homeowners will be familiar with. As most people will know, guttering is used to collect and channel rainwater away from the roof, and can be made from UPVC, aluminium or steel. Guttering may seem like a small detail, but it does play a crucial role in the protection of the home. If water is allowed to stand around the base of a house, it can start to seep in through cracks and gaps, causing damp and rot. In extreme cases, this can even lead to the collapse of walls or the foundation of the house. As such, they need to be regularly maintained and replaced when they become clogged or damaged over time.
