Facade Flourish: Exploring Trends and Techniques in External Cladding

External cladding has become an increasingly popular choice over recent years for those who want to give their building projects a modern, stylish and high-quality finish that will stand the test of time. We discuss some of these trends and techniques in external cladding to give you an insight into the various options that are available.

As the leading low maintenance building product suppliers in the South East, we are at the forefront of the latest external cladding trends, supplying industry leading products to our customers.

What is external Cladding?

External cladding is a material that is attached to the exterior of a building to provide several functions, including increased style aesthetic.

Traditionally, external cladding materials were wood or brick. With new technologies evolving, plastic and composite materials such as fibre cement, are now more frequently used.

Cladding provides several qualities including protecting the building from the elements, improving its structural integrity, energy efficiency and insulation from noise. It also boosts its curb appeal and market value.

What different trends and techniques of external cladding are available?

Cladding materials come in a variety of styles, textures, and colours, and the wide options available give property owners a chance to enhance the aesthetics of their home.

Perhaps one of the most common and popular materials used for external cladding is fibre cement (a composite material). Made using cement reinforced with cellulose fibres, its popularity is largely due to its durability. Given its make-up, it is resistant to moisture, fire, and rotting, and it does not warp or crack (unlike some other materials). It can also be easily painted in any colour.

At Edge Building Products, we offer the James Hardie fibre cement cladding system.

The Hardie fibre cement plank cladding system is hailed as the ‘ultimate alternative to wood’. Made from resilient fibre cement, it still giv clients that desirable timber grain effect, or ‘New England’ style look and feel to their property exterior.

Meanwhile, PVC cladding is popular for its low maintenance requirements, as it does not require painting, staining, or sealing. PVC cladding is lightweight, easy to install and manoeuvre. At Edge we offer the Fortex Cladding System which is four times lighter than fibre cement. Alongside this, we sell Shiplap and Open V cladding products.

Fortex Cladding is made from a lead free, environmentally friendly formulation which is guaranteed for 10 years (T&Cs apply). With 10 colours available, all combining the innovative PVC benefits with an authentic, painted timber finish.

With our Shiplap cladding range, the overlapping boards are designed to create a tight seal that helps stop moisture and air entering the inside of the building. This tight seal can also create a sound barrier too. Comparatively, our Open V cladding mimics traditional wooden cladding with the grooves designed to offer a stylish and modern look. This adds depth to a building’s exterior whilst allowing for efficient drainage.
