What are roofline products and how do they work?

Normally, when someone refers to roofline products, they mean fascias and soffits, guttering and cladding, or decorative elements such as gallows and dentils. Here, we delve into our range of roofline products at Edge, to give you an insight as to what they are and how they work.

Firstly, where is the roofline on a house?

The boards that are around the bottom edge of your roof, joining the roof with the wall of the property referred to as the roofline by most builders and construction personnel.

Having well-installed fascias and soffits will help to defend the feet of your roof rafters against the rain and wind. It also stops birds, vermin, and insects from getting into your attic or roof void and building their nests.

Soffit

Soffits act as a form ventilation unit for your loft space. They keep warm moisture in the air from getting into the attic air and condensing, producing mould.

Before soffit became a widespread way of circulating air through a roof area, homes used gable vents or a hood vent to create airflow. The problem is they didn’t circulate all the air, just the air in specific locations and mould would grow in the insulation where it doesn’t circulate.

Using soffits for aeration and is one of the most effective ways to ventilate into the attic. Air from the soffit sequences to the vents to draw heat and moisture away from the house. Moisture is mould’s breeding ground and can shorten the lifetime of all the roofing elements.

Fascia

A fascia, often known as a fascia board, is the horizontal band that runs along the lower edge of a roof where it overhangs the building’s walls, closing the gap between the wall and the roof. Take a look at some of the types of fascia we supply at Edge:

Fascia

Flat roof fascia – doesn’t have a leg which allows it to be fixed flat onto the wall, perfect for flat roofs where there is no soffit detail.

Fascia

Square Leg Fascia (16mm) – the 16mm thickness allows the fascia to be fixed directly to the rafter ends with no need for a backing board.

Fascia

Bullnose Fascia (16mm) – Again, the 16mm thickness allows the fascia to be fixed directly to the rafter ends, without the need for a backing board.

Ogee

Ogee Fascia – 9mm Ogee cover board with a more decorative finish. Use in conjunction with a timber backing board.
