Preparation

Having the correct atmosphere and prepared surface is important when using our coving products. If the environment is not suitable, it could lead to faults and affect the longevity of the product.

In order to align the products with the installation space conditions, we recommend that you store the profiles and adhesives at room temperature and wait 24 hours before installing.

During this time, you can ensure that the walls and ceilings are flat by sanding and washing them. Finally, make sure the space is as dust-free as possible and free of any grease.

 

Tools

Some tools that we recommend you use when installing our coving products:

• • Fisco Big T Tapes measure 5m– to measure the lengths of profile (imagine that!)

• • Jackhand Saw 13″ Plus – for accurate cutting of profile and superior finish, comes with a grip for comfort.

• • Mitre box – to help you achieve flawless mitre cuts for the joins in the corners of the room

• • pencil – to mark mitre and cutting lines

• • scraper, spatula and filling tools – to remove any remnants of sealant and smooth out visible joints

• • adhesives – to ensure a quality installation, read on to find out about the sealants that are best for our coving range

• • sandpaper – to smooth any remaining lumps before painting.

 

Sealants and adhesives

Using sealants that compliment the properties of the coving profile is essential in the quality of the installation. Here are some of the sealants we recommend:

Orac Deco Fix Extra Joint Glue – fixes the profile to the wall, suitable for heavy profiles and exterior applications, non-porous surfaces or damp environments.

Orac Deco Fix Power Coving Adhesive – for gluing seem joints between mouldings. The more humidity, the faster the drying time.

 

Installation and Finishing

Your project may include installing coving to larger rooms, which can seem daunting. Luckily, we have this useful installation guide to help you with the process, ensuring that you achieve the perfect finish.

Here are the 14 simple steps in the process to a great coving installation:

 

 

1 – 4 – mark up the cornice mouldings and measure the lengths required and angles of corners using a pencil.

5a-b – mark the mitre on the inside and outside corner and cut the mitres to suit the measurements – use a mitre box as a cutting guide if you need to.

6-8 – apply the Orac Deco Fix Extra Joint Glue over the entire length, position the coving profile and push it firmly into place, then remove excess sealant from the edges of the profile with a scraper or spatula.

9-11 – fitting the joints – apply Orac Deco Fix Power Coving Adhesive in every joint then push the joints firmly together, again – use a scraper or spatula to remove the excess adhesive and spills out of the join after the joint has been joined for 1 hour maximum.

12-14 – use DecoFiller, decorators caulk or filler to smooth out any visible joints, and sand back any remaining bumps or flaws. Remove any dust and debris and then, once all the sealants are cured, you can paint!

Flashing is an important element in the weatherproofing of buildings, and in this Quick Guide to Flashing, we explore the most common types of flashing material, how it is used, and our product recommendations, to help you make an informed decision about which flashing is right for your clients’ projects.

 

Weatherproofing is the process of making a structure resistant to the elements and can be achieved through many forms. It is a vital element of a building’s sealant as it helps to prevent water damage which can lead to mould growth, wood rot, and severe structural issues.  It can also help to reduce heating and cooling costs by preventing drafts, and this is particularly important with the recent steep rise in fuel bills. There are many different ways to weatherproof a building, but in this guide we specifically put our focus on Flashing.

 

What is ‘flashing?’

 

Flashing (sometimes referred to as “seaming tape”) is used to seal and protect areas of a building, (the building “envelope”), where two pieces of material meet, such as at roof edges, corners, chimneys, around windows, doors, and vents.  Flashing is so important because it prevents water from penetrating the building envelope, which can go on to cause serious damage.  When installed correctly, weatherproofing flashing can help to prolong the life of a building by decreasing the chances of this water penetration.

 

There are several different types of flashing available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this guide, we will take a look at the most common types of flashing so that you are able to make an informed decision about which one is right for your project.

 

 

Types of flashing

 

The most common types of flashing are metal flashing, and the more modern alternative – flexible flashing.

 

Metal flashing can be made from galvanized steel, lead, copper, zinc or aluminium and is typically installed using nails or screws. There are advantages of metal flashing which include its long-term durability. Copper, a popular choice for flashing, is relatively pliable and can be soldered, but it comes at a high price. Aluminium on the other hand can be painted, if required, for a more aesthetically pleasing finish. It is also slightly cheaper than copper, but it is less pliable. Aluminium flashing would also need to be joined to the roof by stapling or by using another mechanical fastener.

 

The disadvantage with all metal flashing is its susceptibility to corrosion. It can also be more difficult to repair than other materials if it becomes damaged. Often, whole strips of the metal flashing will need to be replaced which, of course, can be a costly and timely process.

 

Flexible flashing products are asphalt-based, self-adhered membranes, which are applied to the surface of the building with an adhesive backing which is protected by a peel-away release paper. Flexible flashing is available in a variety of widths and lengths and can often be customised to fit most building projects.

 

The advantages of asphalt-based, self-adhered flashing, include its flexibility, durability, its  convenience, and its ease of installation. One of their very few disadvantages of flexible flashing is that it may not have the lifespan of their metal counterparts. Still, they are increasingly popular because of their simple application. Unlike metal products, they are also a more economical option, which is often an important consideration when it comes to building or home improvement projects.

Butyl flashings are made from butyl rubber and they’re extremely popular due to their ease of application in cold weather, (perfect for building projects carried out during harsh UK winters!). They also bond a little slower, which helps with any adjustments needed during the installation process.

 

Our butyl flashband is a rubber-based sealing tape which provides a fast and excellent adhesion to many substrates. As well as its flexibility even in cold temperatures, it is UV and weather resistant, meaning it is excellent at keeping moisture out. In addition to being a perfect solution for sealing around chimneys, air vents, sky lights, windowsills and sliding doors, our butyl flashband is perfect for repairing areas where previous membrane has worn away. This means it’s a perfect solution for patching up areas that need it, rather than having to replace the entire flashing.

 

We sell butyl flashband in 3 different widths, 150mm, 225mm, and 300mm, all in rolls of 10m. The Lead Grey finish means it is ideal for use in most flashing applications. 2. Thermal performance
The flat glass rooflight has been put through rigorous testing to ensure that it is as efficient as possible. The thermally broken aluminium frame, 20mm warm edge spacer bar and argon gas sealed glass unit all help the overall product to achieve the fantastic U Value of 1.3 w/m2k.

 

3. Active solar control glass, included as standard
Pilkington active solar control glass is fitted into the rooflight as standard. This is the 6mm toughened external pane, and it effectively reflects heat whilst being low maintenance and self-cleaning.
The inner pane is a laminated safety glass that is incredibly difficult to break and will never shatter. The laminated safety glass also significantly reduces noise pollution.

 

4. Simple installation
Installing our Flat Glass Rooflight couldn’t be easier. It’s fixed from the inside, preventing any security issues or potential leak points. There are fixing staps that are fitted in the manufacturing process and the whole thing comes as one unit – meaning there are no extra bits to fix on after.
The rooflight is plasterboard fitted, as standard, to make finishing as easy as possible.

 

5. Guarantee

Multipane – the multi-paned rooflight is essentially lots of fixed panes joined together in order to create one very large rooflight – again, increasing the natural light levels in the home, boosting your interior space and providing a lovely view of the sky.

We have a large range of sizes that our stocked, which we can get to you within 48 hours of ordering.  This is especially useful if you haven’t yet built a hole in your roof for the rooflight to be installed in, as you can build the gap to fit our stock sizes and save time and money!

We’re delighted to award Allbright Limited the October Installation of the Month, for their stunning renovation of this Sussex seafront property. The project includes installation of two sets of Origin bifold doors with electric integral blinds in anthracite grey, plus fascias and soffits also in dark grey.

The sleek Origin bifolds are marine graded, to protect them from the salty seafront air. The electric integral blinds open up to reveal a beautiful sea-scape and bring lots of natural light into the property.

The anthracite fascias and soffits are matched perfectly to the windows and doors, adding a contemporary style to the property.
