Congratulations to AMS Property Services, the winners of our May 2024 Installation of the Month!

AMS Property Services got in touch with us on social media. They posted the before and after of their fascia renovation, tagging Edge Building Products in the post.

Their customer’s home was in need of a bit of TLC. With moss covering their porch and roofline, the homeowner called in AMS Property Services. They got to work completing a full moss removal. Finally, to pull together the exterior aesthetic of the home, AMS Property Services matched the new Chartwell Green paneling on the front porch to the green of the customer’s front door. The roofing industry has been transforming over recent years. Advancements in technology and materials are pushing the boundaries of rooflight design, efficiency, and sustainability. Modern roofing systems are not only quick and easy to install but are also low maintenance for the property owner. This blog explores the benefits and features of EDGEsky rooflights PLUS find out about our reduced pricing on stock rooflights.

Lighter and brighter spaces with Flat Roof Lights and Roof Lanterns

There has been a noticeable surge in the popularity of flat roof house extensions in the last two decades.  This trend has been driven by homeowners who are looking to maximise their living spaces. Sleek, modern constructions that give the option of open-plan family living are still highly sought after. Not surprisingly, this rise in flat roof extensions has seen an increased demand for roof lights and roof lanterns. Skylights can flood interiors with natural light, creating bright and inviting spaces. No wonder they are so popular!

This shift towards flat roof extensions also reflects a broader trend in residential architecture. Blending functionality with style, natural light has become a central element of home design. A non-negotiable in elevating the usability of a new extension. These innovations not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a building but also offer significant energy savings by maximising the use of natural light and warming rooms naturally using the heat of the sun.

The EDGEsky Roof Lantern: A Glimpse into Roofing Excellence

The EDGEsky roof lantern stands out as a prime example of modern roofing brilliance. Roof lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, are typically installed on flat roofs atop single storey extensions. They are multi-dimensional glass structures, catching the light from all angles. EDGEsky offers excellent energy efficiency, boasting complete roof U values from 1.2w/m2K. We’ve ensured that your home is not just full of natural light but can also maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. To make sure you can enjoy the view all-year long, your rooflight can also be enhanced to include high-performance self-cleaning glass. With a fixed pitch of 25 degrees, we can manufacture your new roof lantern in any size up to 4000x 6000mm, in Matt Grey, Matt Black or Gloss White. Looking for something a bit more colourful? Your roof lantern can be manufactured in any RAL colour by special order.

Simplistic Modern Roofing with The EDGEsky Flat Rooflight

Modern architectural design favours minimalism, and the EDGEsky flat glass rooflight is the embodiment of this principle. Designed with exceptional thermal performance in mind, the rooflight merges simplicity with efficiency. Edge to edge glass ensures that your view is not obstructed by a bulky frame. Our stock sizes are 1000mmx1000mm, 700mmx1500mm, 1000mmx1500mm and 1000mmx2000mm, and we offer a range of colours for the frames including Matt Grey and Matt Black. We can also supply your frame in any bespoke colour of your choice from the standard RAL and BS colour ranges. Our EDGEsky flat glass rooflight offers a straightforward installation process making it a favourite among builders. Plus, with the silicone joint alone the vertical edge, the risk of water ponding on top of the rooflight has been significantly reduced.

The UK is officially out of the recession that began at the end of 2023. Although this is a sign of gradual improvement, many of us will not feel the effects of the economic upturn until 2025. Let’s take a closer look at this announcement, and what it means for the construction sector.

UK is no longer in a recession.

From January to March 2024 the UK economy saw a growth of 0.6%. This is the fastest growth seen in the past two years indicating that the UK economy is beginning to show signs of recovery.

Economic growth is thought to have been led by the service sectors and aided by the early Easter in March. Art, hospitality and entertainment sectors are seeing growth as people begin to invest in leisure and cultural experiences again. The early Easter bank holiday also encouraged consumers to get out and about, spending on day trips and short holidays. Car manufacturers are also reported to have had a successful first quarter. Moreover, credit and debit transactions are showing consumers to be investing in clothes and home furnishings. The increase in consumer spending seen across January and March has boosted the economy, thereby providing greater confidence to manufacturers and retailers.

How will this affect me?

With interest rates holding steady at 5.25% as of Thursday, May 9th 2024, numerous homeowners find themselves contending with elevated mortgage rates. This marks the highest interest rates have reached in 16 years, making it more difficult for individuals to enter the housing market amidst escalating property prices. Consequently, many are still grappling with the financial burden of rising mortgage payments, reducing their overall disposable income. It has been announced that the Bank of England may begin to cut interest rates at the beginning of June. However, it is understood that this will be dependent on continued economic growth and political certainty.

Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, told the BBC that while the UK is seeing recovery, it is not a strong recovery. It may be some time before working people feel the effects of this economic growth.

Recession in the construction sector?

While the service and hospitality sectors have seen an uplift in spending, the construction sector is seeing a continued economic decline. Construction Products Association (CPA) predicts that the construction sector will decline by 2.1% in 2024. Previously, the decline was predicted to be around 0.3%, highlighting that the construction sector is still grappling with the economic recession.

The fall in construction output is primarily due to a decline in private housing new builds, and repairs, maintenance and improvement projects (RM&I). CPA note that the housing industry collectively suffered from the rise in interest rates in 2023. Moreover, the construction sector saw a difficult start to the last quarter. Persistent rain and flooding slowed down progress on existing projects. International conflict and trading disputes also disrupted the supply chain of necessary building materials. Overall, it has been difficult for construction firms to secure work contracts, and the work that has been booked has been slowed by weather and supply chain issues.

Although there has been some improvement in the mortgage rates between 2023-2024, this has not yet resulted in an increase in private home new builds and renovations. Construction News predicts that there will not be an upturn in the construction industry until 2025, when the projects initiated by new homeowners in 2024 are able to commence. The CPA hopes that the gradual fall in interest rates will kickstart a boost for private housing.

As we move further into 2024, it is also looking increasingly likely that there will be a change of government. A change of government will have an unknown impact on public housing spending, and the delivery of public infrastructure projects. If there is a change of government, it will likely take a few months for the public housing sector to settle. Therefore, although there is a positive outlook for 2025, the construction sector is expected to continue to struggle throughout 2024.

Manager’s insight…

“Whilst we are finding that some of our customers are busy, they are mostly saying it’s work they have had booked in for a while.  Others are saying that they are having to fight hard for each order and project.  At Edge, we are supporting customers by making sure that they have minimum disruption in their supply chain by ensuring they have what they need to keep their projects moving. It is a key part of our business ethos to be reliable and sustain the level of service Edge customers have grown to love over the years. With high stock levels, next day delivery, and an excellent customer service team, we are working hard to support our customers in this difficult economic climate.’

When looking to improve the ‘look’ of your house, often the focus is on the more obvious aspects, such as replacing windows and doors, re-painting or garden landscaping. However, some lesser known building components play a really important role in protecting your home while enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. Two such elements are the fascias and soffits.

If you haven’t heard of either of these roofline elements, but perhaps you have been advised that they need replacing, this guide will take you through what these components are, their importance, the different stylistic and colour options available, and how to select the right products for your home.

Understanding Fascias and Soffits

What are Fascias?

Fascias are the vertical finishing edge connected to the ends of the rafters, trusses, or the area where the gutter attaches to the roof. Fascias play an important aesthetic role by creating a smooth and even appearance for the edge of the roof. Additionally, they protect the wooden board against water damage that can occur, particularly during the wet months of the year.

What are soffits?

Soffits are the exposed surface beneath the overhanging section of a roof eave. They are crucial for ventilating the attic space. Proper ventilation helps to release heat in the summer and moisture in the winter, which keeps your home more comfortable and prevents rot in the rafters.

Why are they so important?

Both fascias and soffits are integral to the structure of your home. Together they work to protect the roof and interior of the house from weather extremities while also providing a finished look. Without proper fascias and soffits, your home could suffer from water damage, insect infestation, and poor attic ventilation leading to mould growth and wood rot. Fascias and soffits are a non-negotiable element of household maintenance when it comes to protecting the home you love.

Examples of fascias and soffits

Stylistic and Colour Options

One of the great things about choosing fascias and soffits for your home is the variety of stylistic options available. Gone are the days when homeowners had to settle for the standard white facias and soffits. Today, there is a multitude of colour choices available. You could, for example, match the new fascias and soffits to your front door, to bring a pop of colour to the roofline. Alternatively, you could select a contrasting colour to bring to the look of your home, creating an entirely unique look to your property. Anthracite grey is continuing to be a popular colour in home renovation trends, with new composite doors and aluminium windows appearing in this sophisticated shade. Consider creating a cohesive look with anthracite grey fascias and soffits.

The ability to match or contrast your fascias and soffits with the rest of your home’s exterior allows for complete customisation and ensures that your home stands out for all the right reasons. In addition to colour variety, fascias and soffits are available in a variety of different materials, including uPVC, vinyl, wood, aluminium. Here at Edge, we would recommend purchasing uPVC fascias and soffits. This is because uPVC is an affordable, easy to maintain product that is highly durable.

Maintenance and upkeep of your roofline

For homeowners looking to completely renovate their property, and for those that simply want to ensure their home is maintained to a high standard, Edge Building Products offers a wide range of fascias and soffits, along with all accessories needed to create a high-quality, low-maintenance roofline.

We would love to be your contractor’s one-stop shop for all products required to ensure your home’s exterior is both functional and stylish.  We offer a great range of fascia and soffit boards for each type of roofline and in any RAL colour, as well as all the necessary accessories to install your new roofline easily and efficiently.

Final Thoughts

Investing in high-quality fascias and soffits is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetics of your home. With various stylistic and colour options available, homeowners can easily choose components that best match their home’s exterior and personal style preferences.

Chat to us online, on the phone, or at our trade counters for further advice and information about fascias and soffits. We would love to hear from you and help you ensure your roofline is secure.

In property build and maintenance, certain components often go unnoticed despite playing a crucial role. While gutters are recognised for their function in directing rainwater away from buildings, fascias and soffits work behind the scenes to support and protect the building, preserving the integrity and adding that all-important aesthetic appeal.

In this blog, we will delve into the indispensable roles of these roofline products and shed light on their significance.

Understanding Fascias and soffits

Fascias and soffits are key architectural elements of the roofline, working together to protect and finish the look of a home. In short, fascias support the roof edge and prevent water damage and pests from entering the building, whilst soffits provide ventilation and protection. These two components not only enhance the all-important curb appeal but also extend the lifespan of roofing systems by mitigating potential damage caused by water infiltration or inadequate ventilation.

Both fascias and soffits contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the property, providing a clean, finished look. Did you know, you can get fascias and soffits in a range of different colours and materials?

Material Matters

The choice of material for fascias significantly impacts their durability and maintenance requirements. While wooden fascias offer a more traditional look, they do require regular upkeep. Wooden fascias can become rotten or warp and therefore are not always the best choice of material.

uPVC fascias, on the other hand, are low-maintenance and weather-resistant, increasing their longevity. This makes uPVC fascias a popular choice among homeowners and builders alike who are looking for a low maintenance product without compromising on design.

Ventilation Functionality

Condensation in a loft can lead to insulation damage or mould growth – not ideal! However, properly ventilated soffits can prevent condensation buildup within the property’s loft space. By allowing fresh air to flow through eaves and exits near ridge vents or gable ends, soffits promote airflow. This airflow helps to regulate temperature extremes throughout the different seasons.

Three examples of fascias and soffits

Design Versatility

Aside from their functional benefits, soffits offer design versatility that can enhance architectural aesthetics. Available from Edge in a variety of styles, builders have the flexibility to choose designs that complement different styles of homes or commercial buildings, while the strength and durability remains uncompromised.

Our fascias and soffits are available in a range of styles, thicknesses, and lengths. For the property owner who would like to co-ordinate their roofline with the windows, our roofline products are available in a range of colours from white, grey, mahogany, cream, black and many more. Plus, we can spray them to any RAL or BS colour! More information on our spraying service is available here.

If your client is struggling to visualise their roofline products in situ, we even have a handy visualiser tool so that they can see what the building will look like once they are fitted!

Choosing Quality with Edge Building Products

When it comes to sourcing superior products for construction projects we know that our clients prioritise quality, durability, and functionality. This is where Edge Building Products stands out. With a vast selection of high-quality fascia boards and soffit panels made from uPVC which is a highly durable material designed to withstand even the harshest of British weather!

We know that our customers are looking for quality, durable, and functional products. This is why we pride ourselves on providing low-maintenance, quality uPVC products for the trade. uPVC is our material of choice as it is a highly durable product, requiring very little annual upkeep, and designed to withstand even the harshest of British weather.

It is essential to prioritise the selection of high-quality building products to ensure long-term protection and durability for any construction project. When combined with well-maintained gutters, fascias and soffits play a crucial role in maintaining a building’s structural integrity. These roofline products should offer your projects excellent ventilation and protection from pests and harsh weather. So whether you are a contractor, builder, or homeowner, investing in high quality, low maintenance building products will ultimately result in cost savings, improved curb appeal for the property, and even increased value of the home.

Your front door is more than just an entry point; it’s a statement piece that sets the tone for your entire home. In recent years, composite doors have surged in popularity for their durability, energy efficiency, and versatile design options. Today, we are going to explore the latest in 2024 home design trends. Embrace pastels, warm tones, and calming colours this year. From bespoke designs tailored to your unique style to personalised touches, let’s explore how you can elevate your home’s curb appeal with a composite front door that enhances your unique aesthetic.

Embracing lilac this Spring.

White, black, and anthracite grey front doors have been popular for years. They are versatile and easily match other aspects of exterior design, such as window frames and fascias. However, moving away from these safe colours can add instant curb appeal to a property.

Following the global success of the Barbie movie, 2023 saw an increase in soft and hot pink décor trends. While hot pink front doors are dropping in popularity, pastel pink remains an exciting way to brighten up a home exterior. A light pastel pink brings youthful energy to exterior design, while a warmer, dusky pink is a sophisticated statement.

Not a fan of pink? The subtler tone of lilac provides excellent versatility while still maintaining a sense of neutrality. Lilac is a soft, romantic move away from the traditional grey of front doors. It is playful colour, sure to draw the eye of potential buyers. This pastel gives a new lease of life to country-style properties and elevates the appearance of modern new builds.

Pink and lilac composite doors

Soft, nature-inspired pastels.

Nature-inspired palettes are going nowhere. Interior and exterior design will continue to be inspired by the vibrant colours outside our front door in 2024. Natural shades such as green, blue, and yellow are known to relieve stress and provide a sense of serenity, while also inspiring creative thought. What better way to enter your home than feeling relaxed and rejuvenated by the beautiful front door you unlock?

The Valspar colour of the year is Renew Blue, a bright and peaceful green-inspired blue. These bright yet pastel blue tones will liven up any entranceway. Bringing together a soft mix of pink and yellow tones the Pantone colour of the year is Peach Fuzz. As expected, this is a warm pink hue which Pantone describes as capturing ‘our desire to nurture ourselves and others’. Pastel pink, peach, and yellow tones create a warm and inviting entrance for your guests. Soft greens are also an excellent choice for the creative homeowner. Did you know that traditionally a green front door was symbolic of wealth, health, and security? Try a sage green, or perhaps a grey-green door to bring luck and prosperity to your home design.

Classic design with bold, primary colours.

If you are not such a fan of a softer, pastel tone, fear not. Bold, primary colours are a classic and show-stopping way to bring personality to the exterior of your home. Bright blue, red, and yellow doors provide a welcome diversion from the classic white or black front door while still looking traditional.

Deep red and navy blue look great year-round and will bring attention to your home in the best way. Grey will also continue to be a popular departure from a white or grey door, providing simple elegance to your porch.

Red and blue composite doors

To side panel or not to side panel?

Moving beyond just colour choices, there is a plethora of ways to personalise your front door and make a statement in your neighbourhood.

Increasing the glass on your front door brings a luxurious, contemporary feel to your home. Try a series of square windows going down your door, or an elongated glass panel down one side. Alternatively, a smaller curved window at the top of the door exemplifies cottage charm while still letting the light into your home.

Have you considered adding a stained glass window to your front door? From a classic diamond shape to a more intricate mosaic of colour and shapes, a stained glass element provide another opportunity to either create a cohesive or contrasting design at the threshold of you home.

Why choose a composite front door?

Great question! Composite front doors provide the traditional style and texture of a timber door without any of the nasty maintenance issues. Timber may crack, spilt, or wrap, and requires frequent sanding and repainting. Composite front doors, on the other hand, are often guaranteed to be colourfast for their lifetime, allowing you to keep enjoying your door no matter the weather.

Composite doors are typically made of a series of laminated timber sheets, providing a robust core to the door. By layering these laminated sheets, the core of a composite door is stronger than a timber door and resists warping or splitting. These doors are extremely durable, weather resistant, and provide good home security. Here at Edge, we can also provide advice on what lock to have installed in your new front door to keep your home and family safe.

Check if you need permission.

Most homeowners will not need to seek permission before changing the colour of their front door. However, always check to see if there are any local regulations which affect your property. Also, check the guidelines for decorating if you have a listed property, or a property partly owned by a housing association.

Exterior cladding is a hot trend this Spring, remaining hugely popular post-COVID. Colin St John, the commercial director of FreeFoam Building Products, has predicted that cladding will remain the next big trend in home renovation until at least 2035.

We are big on supplying high-quality products at a great price. So, this April we are rolling out a fantastic discount on cladding. Up to 20% off on Fortex cladding boards!

Let’s explore why now is the perfect time to refresh the exterior of your home with an attractive cladding finish.

PVC cladding, timber, or brick?

While bricks and mortar remain the most common exterior of UK homes, PVC cladding is growing in popularity, and for good reason. Have you noticed the influx of new-build homes with striking exterior cladding? Unlike bricks or traditional timber cladding, PVC cladding is super easy to maintain. A quick wash of water every few months is all you need to keep the exterior of your home looking fantastic. The bold colour and design of the cladding will also give your home curb appeal, boosting its market value by giving older properties a new lease of life.

Apart from the clear aesthetic benefits of external cladding, there are some additional benefits to this renovation. Firstly, PVC cladding can improve the thermal efficiency of a property, when installed with standard insulation materials. In fact, when installed with insulation, Fortex cladding is A+ rated for efficiency according to the Building Research Establishment’s Green Guide. Fortex cladding is also lead-free and guaranteed to stand the test of time. As a mark of their confidence in the product, Freefoam offers a 10-year guarantee on their Fortex products (T&Cs apply).

Curating the perfect exterior with Fortex cladding.

While we may not want to think about it, COVID not only significantly altered our lives and relationships; it also affected our design choices. Following COVID, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of earthy tones in home décor. By leaning into sage, evergreen, tones of grey-green, and warmer earth tones such as terracotta, homeowners have been trying to bring the outside in. These earthy tones bring the peace and harmony of a sprawling forest into our living room.

So why stop with the interior? Bring these calming tones to the exterior of your property. Fortex has captured this tide of home renovation perfectly by offering weatherboard and shiplap cladding in an attractive embossed wood effect. No need to compromise when choosing the low maintenance PVC over the traditional timber cladding. Enjoy the beautiful, nature-inspired design without the upkeep of timber boards.

Fortex also offer customers a fantastic range of subtle colours. White, pale gold, sand, sage green, misty grey, and slate grey, to name a few. Whether you would like a striking, bold exterior with slate grey cladding, or make a statement with sage green cladding, Fortex makes sure you never have to compromise on quality. They have perfected an innovative colour technology that provides market-leading colour matching and colourfastness. Fortex cladding boards are also resistant to UV rays and discolouration, ensuring that you get to enjoy the colour you chose for years to come.

Have you thought about choosing a contrasting colour of cladding to that of your fascias and soffits? Alternatively, create a cohesive look by matching these aesthetic points of your home’s exterior.

The need for sustainable building practices is not just a trend. It’s fast becoming an essential element of future planning proposals to demonstrate environmental objectives. Construction firms must recognise the environmental impact of their builds and materials as we edge towards the 2050 deadline to be net zero.

Roofing is a key component of many construction projects and has recently come under scrutiny when it comes to sustainable practices. We are going to explore how the EDGEsky roofing system has been developed to be both eco-conscious and easy to use.

Shining a light on green builds.

We like to keep things simple. The EDGEsky roof system includes not only the all-important rooflight, but also all of the corrugated sheets, membranes, glazing bars, end closure systems, and roofing tiles you will need to complete your project.

EDGEsky rooflights – the aluminium roof lantern and flat glass rooflight – have been designed to maximise the natural light entering a building. Say goodbye to artificial lighting on a gloomy day, EDGEsky rooflights allow light to flood into your room, reducing the household’s daily energy consumption.

Easy to install, low maintenance, and highly durable.

The EDGEsky roofing system has been manufactured for ease of installation. For example, our glazing bars have an innovative and easy-to-use snap-down system to help you secure a new glazing panel. With an easy-to-follow assembly process, your team can deliver high-quality results in minimal time. If your company is based in the South-East, we can also ensure next-day delivery for any stock parts, reducing the need for your team to travel, thereby cutting down on the carbon footprint of your build.

We pride ourselves on producing high quality, low maintenance products. This means that our EDGEsky roof system has been developed using highly durable materials. By investing in the core materials of our products, the need for replacement parts or repair work down the line has been significantly reduced. Not only does this make life easier for homeowners, who are free to simply enjoy the beautiful views, it also ensures that fewer resources will be consumed over the lifetime of the building.

Made in the UK.

Supporting local industries is pivotal in reducing the carbon footprint associated with transport. Edge’s commitment to UK-manufactured products ensures a more eco-friendly supply chain from production to project site.

The most efficient in class

Where environmental impact is integral to building design, U-Values have become a critical measure of success. Outstanding U-Values in our products demonstrate our commitment to not only improving the performance but also reducing the environmental footprint of our building products. By choosing our EDGEsky products, you’re opting for a greener, more sustainable future without sacrificing style or substance.

Thermal efficiency and U-Values that matter

Thermal efficient (or ‘energy-saving’) windows and doors, play a crucial role in the energy conservation of a building. They are engineered to minimise the use of artificial heating (and cooling systems for those warmer countries!) by maintaining a consistent indoor temperature through insulation.

By doing so, the windows and doors reduce the transfer of heat, keeping the space warm during winter and cool during summer. Beyond the benefit of significant energy and cost savings, thermally efficient windows and doors also enhance comfort levels inside. These windows block damaging UV rays that can fade furniture and wood finishes and positively contribute to a home’s overall energy performance rating. Reducing household energy consumption is a step in the right direction for environmental sustainability.

Our EDGEsky aluminium roof lantern boasts complete U-Values from 1.2 and features high performance glazing. Not only are the lanterns stunning in appearance with outstanding attention to detail, but they also keep valuable heat in, an important factor when considering glazing for properties.

Our flat glass rooflight also has an overall U Value (double glazing and frame) of 1.3 w/m²k and glass U Value of 1.0 w/m2k. Simplistic and boasting modern minimalism, our rooflights demonstrate exceptional thermal performance.

U-Values are of huge importance, and emphasis will continue to be put on U-values in the future as we aim to improve the performance and environmental impact of future construction projects.

Past Winners Installation of the Month

Ready for a spring clean? Perhaps some decorating over the long Easter weekend? Maybe you are planning a much bigger project?  Let’s take a look at some of the most popular home renovation trends of Spring 2024 to help you create an aesthetic and vibrant home.

It is not surprising that due to rising mortgage rates and a fluctuating housing market lots of homeowners are choosing to invest in their current properties rather than move. Extensions remain a popular method of home renovation as people look to create larger living spaces and kitchens, and possibly even add more bedrooms to their property.

Trends to look out for in Spring 2024

Energy efficient home design – Reducing our carbon footprint with stunning home renovations.

This Spring, there’s a growing emphasis on making our homes more energy efficient. From investing in smart appliances to implementing sustainable building materials, homeowners are prioritising eco-friendly solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and lower their energy bills.

We’ve all experienced the difficulties of a conservatory – too cold to sit in during the winter, and then sweltering in the summer. Instead of investing in a full-scale conservatory, one high-quality roof light can bring effortless style and sophistication to a room without making it inhabitable. EDGEsky ensures that you can keep the heat in and the weather out by eliminating the risk of cold bridging. This has been achieved by isolating the external profiles from the internal ones. Coupled with high-performance glazing, the EDGEsky aluminium roof lantern is an industry leader in reduced heat transfer. By ensuring that the warmth generated inside your home stays in the house, you will not see an increase in your energy consumption, and you’ll be able to enjoy the warmth of solar energy during those glorious summer days.

“Edge provides a great range of stock and bespoke sizes of rooflights to fit any size requirement. Glazed from edge to edge, the mastic joints are not exposed, thereby reducing the chance of them breaking down in adverse weather conditions overtime.” Gavin Stephens, Bespoke Department

Bring the outside in – Bridge the gap between nature and the home.

Nature-inspired elements take center stage as we bring the outside in. Expect to see a surge in natural fabrics, earthy tones, and botanical motifs to create a serene and organic ambiance within your living spaces. Houseplants are just as popular as they were during the COVID years, so a trip to the garden center should be in the diary! Let ample natural light flood your rooms, illuminating every corner with warmth and vitality.

Flat roofs are becoming more popular, especially with the rise of ‘living roofs’, an exciting trend in eco-design. Flat roofs also provide an excellent opportunity for a flat glass rooflight to bring a stream of light and warmth into a room. The EDGEsky flat glass rooflight is the ultimate in simplistic modern design, making the view the focal point of your room. By flooding your living space or new kitchen extension with light, you can bring attention to the vibrant greens of any botanical décor. Your house plants will also be happy, as they can thrive in the warm and sunny environment.

Open-plan living – Creating spaces that your family can enjoy together.

In the spirit of togetherness, open-plan living spaces will remain popular in Spring 2024. Designing communal areas where family and friends can gather together and connect fosters a sense of unity and shared experiences. Whether it’s a spacious kitchen island, or a cosy family room, creating inviting spaces that you can all enjoy together will boost the market value of your home and improve your family’s quality of life.

Kitchen extensions are always popular. With working from home remaining a feature of many professionals’ lives, that new kitchen island may also be doubling as a desk and a board room. It is important to work, live, and cook in a space that has a reliable source of natural light. Many studies have proven that natural light improves our mental health, helps our bodies produce Vitamin D, and regulates our circadian rhythms. The EDGEsky roof lantern has been optimised to provide the largest glass span and fewest rafters of any other system currently available. With more glass and less roof, you can leave the main light off during your video calls, reducing your energy consumption and improving your overall well-being.

Embracing maximalism – Bring back vibrant colours and bold style choices this Spring.

Say goodbye to the minimalism of recent years and hello to a new wave of maximalism. Spring 2024 celebrates boldness and self-expression through vibrant statement pieces and eclectic home décor choices. Experiment with rich textures, and unexpected colour combinations to infuse your home with personality and flair.

Did you know that you can bring your home’s colour scheme to your rooflight? There is no need to compromise with an uninspiring window with EDGEsky rooflights. The stock sizes of EDGEsky roof lanterns are available in Gloss White, Matt Grey, and Matt Black. The EDGEsky flat glass rooflights are available in Matt Black and Matt Grey as stock. Not exciting enough? Any EDGEsky rooflight can be supplied in a bespoke colour of your choice from the standard RAL and BS colour ranges. Bring light into your home and the wow-factor with an exciting frame colour.

“Edge offers a wide range of stock and bespoke colours to suit the needs of our customers. A special feature of the EDGEsky rooflights is the pocket for plasterboard, allowing for a more aesthetically pleasing finish.”  Gavin Stephens, Bespoke Department

When it comes to the exterior of our homes, the attention often gravitates toward the aesthetics – the window styles, the doors, the choice of cladding – and with good reason. However, it is important to remember the unsung heroes that frame and protect the property. In this blog, we focus on the subtle yet indispensable roles that fascias and soffits play in the design of our property exterior, and the innovative ways they can visually enhance our homes and increase that all-important curb appeal.

Ensuring Design and Protection Go Hand in Hand.

Fascias and soffits form an integral part of the roofline, protecting homes from the elements and providing a finished look to the structure. The fascia is the vertical edge of a roof, and the soffit is the exposed surface beneath the overhanging section of a roof eave. Together, they not only prevent rainwater and pests from entering the roof space but also contribute to the overall look and style of the home.

In the context of design and construction, these elements often don’t receive the attention they deserve. This oversight can lead to missed opportunities for creativity once the functional aspects are fulfilled. Understanding the role that these components play in the larger canvas of home design is so important.

Functional and Aesthetically Pleasing.

Edge Building Products provide a range of functional and aesthetically pleasing fascias and soffits that can seamlessly integrate with modern home design. Far from the standardised and uninspired options that once dominated the market, we offer a range that pairs exceptional design with robust performance.

But how do we differ from other building companies? We stand out with our bespoke services, including a spraying service, meaning your client’s fascias and soffits can be uniquely tailored to match any RAL colour, encompassing an extensive range of colours.

A Colour Palette for Every Taste

The colour of fascias and soffits can really impact the overall look of the house. While traditional whites and neutral shades can and will always hold appeal, more adventurous homeowners may opt for bold contrasts or shades that complement the landscaping. Over recent years, trends have changed and evolved and the demand for new, contemporary colours has accelerated. Edge continue to move with the times by ensuring our product offering evolves too.

We hold stock of fascia and soffits in colours that aren’t commonly found elsewhere, such as the subtle yet impactful Painswick, which has emerged as a popular choice for its versatile pairing with various exterior shades.

Have you tried the Edge Fascia and Soffit Visualiser? Explore the extensive range of colours available, such as anthracite grey smooth finish, a contemporary choice that pairs elegantly with modern design elements, such as aluminium windows.

We have noticed two key style trends when incorporating soffits and fascias into the overall design of a property.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the significance of fascias and soffits in the grand design of our homes shouldn’t be understated. These elements are unsung heroes, but really do form the backbone of a cohesive and resilient exterior. At Edge Building Products we offer a thoughtful range of styles and colour choices meaning the potential to elevate your clients’ property aesthetics is boundless.

As we look hopefully towards a warm spring, news outlets are quick to remind us that February 2024 saw the most rainfall and was the warmest in England and Wales since records began in 1836. In this topical climate, it is almost impossible to detach business interests from environmental concerns. We ask a lot from the materials we build with. They must be functional, durable, easy to work with, and low maintenance. Are they environmentally friendly as well? This blog will explore the environmental impact of uPVC windows and what can be done to reduce the carbon footprint of essential construction materials.

Difference between PVC and uPVC materials.

Conversations about the environmental impact of uPVC materials can be misleading. There are plenty of online articles that will discuss at length the greenwashing of construction suppliers. However, many of these articles will not differentiate between PVC and uPVC products. Not only does this undermine the environmental efforts of uPVC suppliers, but it also limits discussions on the environmental change possible in the construction industry.

PVC stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride. The principal environmental concern of this product is the presence of chloride. Chloride is not a renewable product as it is produced through industry treatment. Greenpeace is highly critical of the production of PVC products as the production of chlorine increases the environmental pollutants of local districts. Lots of common household and commercial items are produced using PVC plastic, such as plastic water bottles, cutlery, food bags, and clingfilm. As we know, these plasticised products are sometimes difficult to recycle at home. Many companies are making a conscious effort to reduce their consumption of PVC plastics by swapping single-use items and packaging to paper or bamboo-based products.

uPVC, however, identifies the product as being non-plasticised. This means that the material is sturdy and rigid, perfect for moulding into roofline and window trims. Although uPVC is still a Poly Vinyl Chloride product, its rigid structure makes it considerably easier to recycle than plasticised products, such as disposable shopping bags. uPVC building products also have a much longer lifespan than household PVC plastic does. For example, many window manufacturers offer a 10-year guarantee against the warp or discolouring of their windows from the point of installation. However, uPVC windows will remain functional long after these warranties have expired, with most having a typical lifespan of 20-35 years or more.

Why choose uPVC windows?

Maintenance and appearance

uPVC window products are a firm favourite for a lot of builders. Available in a vast range of colours and finishes, uPVC window products can seamlessly blend into a multitude of builds, from new build estates to property renovations. Unlike timber window products, uPVC windows are resistant to weathering and are low maintenance. They do not require regular treatments and will not rot away with all the wet weather we have been experiencing. uPVC windows simply require a wipe down every few months to keep them looking fresh. If you love the look of traditional timber windows, consider a uPVC window in a flush casement or sliding sash style to maintain the period features of your home without compromising durability.

Saving energy

Lots of us are looking for ways to reduce our heating costs. We want to be cosy at home, and our windows could be the key to keeping the warmth in. Therefore, while shopping for new uPVC windows, energy efficiency should be at the top of your requirements. By building or renovating your home using highly energy efficient products, you will be reducing the carbon footprint of your household. Here at Edge Building Products, we offer windows that are up to a fantastic A++ WER (Window Energy Ratings), but what does this mean for you? When the sun does shine on those chilly winter mornings or glorious summer afternoons, this heat will be radiating into your home, and then, rather than escaping through the glass, it will be reflected into the room. The weathertight seals also prevent any unpleasant drafts from entering your property, with the added benefit of improving the noise reduction of the windows. All of these features will increase the ambient temperature of your home without needing to adjust the thermostat. On that note, A++ energy efficiency will also save you money.

By keeping the heat produced by your radiators trapped within your home, it is estimated that you could save 14kWh per m2 each year compared to a standard A+ rated window. This saves you enough energy to do a 2kg load of washing every other day for a year!

Improved production techniques

However, we know that production methods are also important when picking an environmentally clean product. uPVC windows supplied by Edge BP are high-quality, energy efficient and 100% lead-free. This reduces the pollutants caused by the product process of uPVC windows and therefore reduces the carbon footprint of new uPVC windows. uPVC products, as they are non-plasticised, are also recyclable. The uPVC window products supplied by Edge BP, for example, are 100% recyclable. This means that as houses are being renovated and older uPVC products are removed, these items can be recycled to produce new uPVC products for future builds. uPVC windows will not naturally decompose, making them a durable and reliable product, so it is important to purchase from suppliers who are actively investing in recycling older uPVC to reduce waste going to landfills. If you are completing your own home renovation, be sure to contact a local waste management service to ensure any scrap uPVC is responsibly recycled.

Final thoughts:

While it can be difficult to juggle to demands of a home renovation – aesthetically beautiful, easy to maintain, and energy efficient -uPVC windows are an easy way to fulfil these important objectives while staying environmentally conscious.

uPVC windows improve the energy efficiency of homes by letting the warmth of the sun in and blocking any cold draughts from outside. Easy to clean and maintain, uPVC windows are durable and can withstand even the wettest of months. By purchasing uPVC windows that are 100% recyclable, you can rest easy knowing that by the end of their lifespan, your windows can be recycled and turned into new products.

Fascia & soffits play important roles in both protecting the structure, and ‘finishing’ the building’s roof system. Though often not the key focus of the homeowner’s renovation, they are nevertheless an integral part in protecting a building’s exterior.

In this blog we’ll highlight the benefits of both soffits and fascias as well as taking you through a quick and useful guide to the range of products we stock here at Edge Building Products. We aim to arm you with the confidence to advise your clients on the products that are right for them, so you can both be safe in the knowledge that all the products you use are produced with low maintenance and high quality in mind.

An introduction to soffits and fascias

Fascia are the decorative boards that both support and protect the ends of the roof’s rafters and are fitted directly onto the rafters or onto subfascia (which are attached to the rafter ends first,) creating a protective barrier between the roofing material and external gutter system. Wood, PVC and fibre cement are common materials used in fascias.

Soffits are often described as the underside of the eaves, the planks that cover any of the rafter tails which protrude from the building’s exterior walls. They are designed to provide protection from the weather, keep heat inside the building and also prevent pests from finding their way into the attic. Common soffit materials are aluminium, wood and vinyl.

Vented soffit boards are designed to allow air to pass through into the building offering replacement air for any warmer air that escapes through the roof vents above.

What is the role of soffits and fascias?

The pair work together in harmony, and we wouldn’t recommend one without the other. However, it’s also important to add that both soffit and fascia’s individual roles are quite different!

Whilst they do provide the completed aesthetic to a building’s roofline, they are performing separate jobs to enhance the building’s performance. They serve as a support for the roof’s gutters and also provide a finished appearance to the roofline.

Both fascias and soffits are vital in protecting a building’s structure from water damage and insect or rodent infestations. Without fascias installed on a building’s roof, rainwater can seep into the roof structure, causing rot and structural damage. Similarly, soffits help prevent water from entering the attic and causing damage there.

A range of quality soffits and fascias

Here at Edge, we supply a range of low maintenance fascias and soffits, as well as ancillaries, corners and joints needed for a complete system installation. We can also spray our boards to any RAL or BS colour to match your client’s project style and meet their requirements in every way… in quality, reduced up-keep and aesthetics.

All of our soffit and fascia products are made using highly durable uPVC designed to withstand severe weather conditions and they are therefore long-lasting…. overall, an excellent low-maintenance choice.

We also have a super innovative, interactive fascia and soffit visualiser tool on our website, thanks to our supplier Swish Building Products. This tool will help you and your clients visualise what their roofline will look like whilst installed – a great, unique and clever tool to show your clients whilst talking through their design ideas!

BOARDS TYPES

Our EDGEline Square Leg fascia is an invaluable component to a roofing system. Its flat board design is fixed directly to the roof’s rafter end and so there is no need for a backing board. Available in 9mm, 16mm and 20mm thicknesses. We also offer Flat Roof, Bullnose and Ogee fascia styles.

SOFFIT BOARDSWhen it comes to soffits, we offer our EDGEline Flat, Hollow and Vented soffit boards too.

For the full range of fascias and soffits, head to our website. Our team is also at hand with any questions you may have. Please do call our team on 0345 021 3333 or drop us an email on: [email protected].

In conclusion, we’ve identified that both soffits and fascias are integral components to a building’s roofing system. Whilst there are a variety of styles available which may suit different buildings and style preferences, regardless of which style you and your client decide to pick, we are proud to supply a comprehensive, quality range of uPVC soffits and fascias that you can count on.

External cladding has become a hot choice when it comes to home and architectural project design.

This is for a multitude of reasons… aesthetic appeal, low maintenance qualities, improving energy efficiency and the structural integrity of a building in addition to protecting the property from the elements. This is the focus of this month’s blog.

As new technologies evolve, the materials used for external cladding has changed too. Traditionally, wood and brick were used on the exterior of buildings, but more recently, durable plastic and composite materials are now popular alternatives.

Perhaps you are increasingly being asked to fit external cladding to your client’s properties (and with very good reason!) Cladding provides an additional layer around the external walls of the building helping to keep the weather out, and heat in.

Whether your clients are looking to add charm and character to a new build, update an older building or create a modern, stylish new project, longevity is at the forefront of most people’s minds when it comes to their home. External cladding can be fitted over the existing external walls or as part of a system which would see the external walls built up using an internal liner, a layer of insulation, followed by an outer sheet which the external cladding would then be fitted over, creating a fully-cladded external wall.

With a wide range of external cladding available on the market, Edge Building Protects specialise in providing you with low maintenance building plastics, including PVC cladding options as well as fibre cement cladding. Both are highly durable materials.

Each of our external cladding products provide protection from the elements, but how?

Unlike traditional timber cladding, the very nature of composite cladding makes it resistant to so much more than its wooden predecessor. Each of our PVC cladding options are resistant to warping and rotting, and PVC won’t attract pests who may try to make themselves a home out of (or meal out of) timber options.

Our composite external cladding products:

Shiplap:

These overlapping boards create a tight seal that prevents air and moisture from penetrating the building. These composite boards are typically installed by first nailing them to the underlying wall, with the top edge of each board overlapping the bottom edge of the one above it. This creates a tight fit that helps keep the boards securely in place, even in windy conditions. The boards can be painted or stained to match the existing colour scheme of the building, or to create a new look.

Open V Cladding:

Sometimes referred to as ‘tongue and groove’ cladding, these are a modern cladding system, characterised by distinctive V-shaped grooves or channels along its surface. These grooves are typically open at the top, allowing for effective drainage of water whilst providing an eye-catching design.

Fortex:

Fortex combines an authentic, sought after timber grained look, with the low maintenance benefits of PVC. Available as Weatherboard, Double Plank Shiplap or Pro Double Plank Shiplap Cladding, the Fortex system is made using Freefoam’s environmentally friendly and lead-free cladding formulation which features a UV and discolouration resistant PVC layer.

What about fibre cement?

Fibre cement is also an effective and popular composite material for external cladding. At Edge, we stock James Hardie plank cladding, made from resilient fibre cement which is again resistant to water, warping, rotting and peeling, unlike traditional painted timber cladding systems.

In conclusion, external cladding made from composite materials provides an additional layer of protection to a property.

You will be able to work confidently using any of our stocked cladding products, safe in the knowledge that they will protect your client’s home and your building project from the elements. Whether that is protection from heat, rain, cold, the sun’s UV rays, and even wind, external cladding offers a second skin wrapping and protection.

Soffits and fascias:

Soffits and fascias are components of a building’s exterior that are often overlooked by the homeowner, but they play an important role in the protection and finish of the structure. They serve as a support for the roof’s gutters and also provide a finished appearance to the roofline. Both are important in protecting a building’s structure from water damage and insect infestations. Without fascias, rainwater can seep into the roof structure, causing rot and other damage. Similarly, soffits help prevent water from entering the attic and causing damage there.

We supply a wide range of both soffits and fascia in addition to providing all the tools required for installation. Our products can be ordered online for either delivery or in-store collection. We have an effective and useful visualiser tool which our customers are able to use to see what your soffit and fascia combination will look like in situ.

Whilst our product ranges are available in a variety of colours, if you aren’t able to find the colour your customer is looking for, we are able to spray our products to any RAL or BS colour. If you need a particular foil to match your project, please do contact us and will try our very best to help.

Window trims and finishing:

We proudly supply one of the broadest ranges of window and glazing products on the market. With a huge variety of window trims, skirting, architrave, window board, cills and hardware, we can assist you in delivering a high quality window fitting service.

Whilst our PVC window trims are hugely popular, largely due to their versatility and wide colour availability, aluminum window trims are rising in popularity. Notoriously tricky to source, we have a range on our online shelves available in three stylish colours and in a variety of sizes.

External cladding:

While we delved into further detail in our recent article, [“Trends and Techniques in External Cladding”] we simply had to include external cladding in the list of our most popular products. External cladding is becoming increasingly popular here on the South Coast, with anthracite leading the charge.

We stock a variety of cladding options including industry leading brands; Fortex and James Hardie (fibre cement cladding).

Sealants and adhesives:

At Edge, we want to make our customers’ lives easier and to support them as best we can in their livelihood and passion. In our mission to achieve this, we are committed to stocking a variety of accessories, which includes sealants and adhesives as well as a large range of hardware and tools to help our customers achieve the fitting and installation of this and more.

Whilst these are lower cost products, they are equally vital elements for every project. At Edge Building Products, we can provide everything you need – from silicone and cleaners to screws and lead flashing. You can browse our extensive range online.

Edge Building Products specialise in low maintenance, high quality building products for the trade, and, while we have touched on a handful of our most popular offerings, our vast product range also includes interior panelling, doors, decking and much more, across our website and three branches in Chichester, Croydon and Horsham. External cladding has become an increasingly popular choice over recent years for those who want to give their building projects a modern, stylish and high-quality finish that will stand the test of time. We discuss some of these trends and techniques in external cladding to give you an insight into the various options that are available.

As the leading low maintenance building product suppliers in the South East, we are at the forefront of the latest external cladding trends, supplying industry leading products to our customers.

What is external Cladding?

External cladding is a material that is attached to the exterior of a building to provide several functions, including increased style aesthetic.

Traditionally, external cladding materials were wood or brick. With new technologies evolving, plastic and composite materials such as fibre cement, are now more frequently used.

Cladding provides several qualities including protecting the building from the elements, improving its structural integrity, energy efficiency and insulation from noise. It also boosts its curb appeal and market value.

What different trends and techniques of external cladding are available?

Cladding materials come in a variety of styles, textures, and colours, and the wide options available give property owners a chance to enhance the aesthetics of their home.

Perhaps one of the most common and popular materials used for external cladding is fibre cement (a composite material). Made using cement reinforced with cellulose fibres, its popularity is largely due to its durability. Given its make-up, it is resistant to moisture, fire, and rotting, and it does not warp or crack (unlike some other materials). It can also be easily painted in any colour.

At Edge Building Products, we offer the James Hardie fibre cement cladding system.

The Hardie fibre cement plank cladding system is hailed as the ‘ultimate alternative to wood’. Made from resilient fibre cement, it still giv clients that desirable timber grain effect, or ‘New England’ style look and feel to their property exterior.

Meanwhile, PVC cladding is popular for its low maintenance requirements, as it does not require painting, staining, or sealing. PVC cladding is lightweight, easy to install and manoeuvre. At Edge we offer the Fortex Cladding System which is four times lighter than fibre cement. Alongside this, we sell Shiplap and Open V cladding products.

Fortex Cladding is made from a lead free, environmentally friendly formulation which is guaranteed for 10 years (T&Cs apply). With 10 colours available, all combining the innovative PVC benefits with an authentic, painted timber finish.

With our Shiplap cladding range, the overlapping boards are designed to create a tight seal that helps stop moisture and air entering the inside of the building. This tight seal can also create a sound barrier too. Comparatively, our Open V cladding mimics traditional wooden cladding with the grooves designed to offer a stylish and modern look. This adds depth to a building’s exterior whilst allowing for efficient drainage.

Why we think external cladding is a great edition to any property

Adding external cladding to a building provides a plethora of additional protective benefits to the structure, as well as improving energy efficiency, curb appeal (with a wide range of colours available) and in many cases the market value of a property. There seems to be little downside to adding external cladding to the home!

At Edge, we keep abreast of the latest trends and techniques in External Cladding to be able to supply the trade with a variety of options to suit individual projects. The majority of our cladding products are available for local delivery direct to site. Order before 3pm and you can qualify for Next Day Delivery (South East only Mon-Fri). The construction industry in the UK is one of the most regulated industries in the world. Builders and contractors are required to meet certain industry standards before they can operate here in the UK. These standards are necessary to ensure that building products are safe, stable, and durable. Builders and contractors must also comply with a wide range of other industry standards, including those relating to environmental sustainability, materials and equipment, and site security. These standards are designed to ensure that construction projects are carried out in an environmentally responsible way, and that the materials and equipment used are of a high quality and safe to use.

Using low-quality building products can lead to building faults, safety hazards, and maybe even the destruction of property long-term. It is therefore crucial to work with a reputable and reliable company who provide high quality building and glazing solutions.

In this blog, we explore the importance of working with high quality products and how we ensure this is a priority in our offering to you.

Using High-Quality Building Products Meets Safety Regulations:

Safety regulations are ultimately put in place to protect people and property. Using low-quality building products that do not meet industry standards can put the safety of workers, homeowners, and the general public at risk. At Edge, we prioritise safety by providing building materials that meet and exceed industry standards. This ensures that the tradesman who use these products can work safely without endangering themselves or others, whilst maintaining the safety of the property owners who will be using the buildings now, and in the future.

At Edge we understand that safety doesn’t end with the material themselves, and that is why we also stock surface protection and PPE. We know that site safety and cleanliness is vital in keeping your projects running smoothly. Our customers are often working to tight deadlines and under immense pressure to complete building projects. We understand that you don’t always have the time to go to multiple locations to pick up your materials and equipment. This is why that alongside high-quality building products, you can pick up gloves, dust sheets and surface protection film from us, saving you valuable time and resources.

Ensure Durability:

Quality building products are essential for building construction and repairs. Building with poor quality products can result in defects in the building structure, making it vulnerable to wind, rain, and fire damage. High-quality building products on the other hand, are designed, built, and tested to withstand various environmental factors to remain robust for years to come. Using high-quality building products ensures that the building will exist for many decades to come, protecting the occupants and their investments.

Many of the leading brands we stock offer guarantees on products, including Triton who offer a 10-year guarantee on their WPC Double Faced Decking range, and the Fortex Cladding products which are also guaranteed for 10 years (T&Cs apply).

Save time and money:

It can be tempting to use cheaper or low-quality building products to save money, but in the long run, this strategy can actually end up costing your business more time and money. Cheap building products often require more frequent repair and maintenance and can even cause you long term financial problems due to the need for complete renovations. Your reputation may also be at stake which is an important consideration in this competitive industry.

High-quality building products, on the other hand, may have a higher initial cost, but they last longer and require fewer repairs, thus saving time and money. We offer competitive pricing, and we are confident in the brands we stock. Together with our brand partners, we have a shared passion for supplying high-quality building products to you, the trade.

Edge’s commitment to high-quality products:

At Edge Building Products we are committed to supplying the trade with the very best products the industry has to offer. We have built strong relationships with our stockists and only supply high-quality, low maintenance building plastics for the trade which includes uPVC windows, doors, cladding, decking, home maintenance tools, hardware and more. Choosing the right entrance door for a building can be a daunting task, particularly with the wide range of options available on the market.

Front doors form part of a building’s overall first impression and must withstand continuous use, so making the right decision can be an important (albeit difficult) one. The wide variety of doors on the market come with many pros and cons which can sometimes heighten the confusion.

In this article, we aim to provide a detailed comparison of two types of modern doors – composite and aluminium entrance doors. We will highlight their features, benefits, and the drawbacks of each door, ensuring you are well equipped to advise your clients which door is right for them.

Composite Doors:

Composite doors are a relatively new addition to the door family, with their production dating back to the late 1990s. Over the last 30 years, however, they have evolved and developed.

So what exactly is a composite door?

Composite is made from a combination of materials – wood, PVC, and foam and this type of door has gained popularity due to their exceptional insulation and superior durability. Designed with a solid wood core or interior (polyurethane) foam layer, they provide superior insulation, making them not only highly energy efficient, but also strong. Often these doors are made with a hardwood inner frame making them a popular choice for the trade due to their ease to install.

Composite doors also have the added advantage of being low maintenance, and they come in a range of colours and finishes meaning there is an option for every taste. They can also be customised to meet unique specifications in terms of size, shape, and style.

At Edge Building Products our range of composite doors offer the highest quality heat insulation, secure multipoint locking systems, and meet the latest security and fire regulations, whilst combining durability and style. Each door is completely weatherproof, featuring glazing styles to suit every type of building, residential or commercial. Our composite door range can even feature a range of glass panel design options if required, giving your clients the opportunity to add more character to their property.

Whilst traditional wooden doors are a firm favourite amongst many, composite doors can be designed to mimic these, and, unlike wooden doors, our composite doors require very little maintenance. Composite doors have developed so much over the years, that from a distance, it can even be hard to tell the difference between these and wooden doors.

Aluminium Entrance Doors:

Aluminium Entrance Doors have been on the market for a long time and have stood the test of time with ease. They are known for, and selected for their strength and durability, making them a great option for buildings in areas prone to harsh weather.

Aluminium doors are not easily damaged by moisture, and they are excellent sound and thermal insulators. Like composite doors, they also require little maintenance, which makes them ideal for busy buildings that want to avoid frequent upkeep. Aluminium doors can be powder-coated in any colour, thereby offering flexibility in design whilst providing additional protection to the elements.

At Edge, we work with Smart Architectural Aluminium, who over the past 40 years have become the UK’s leading supplier of aluminium systems including front doors. Smart’s aluminium entrance doors are produced with ‘first class’ security and expertly used high-quality aluminium. For more information on Smart’s aluminium front doors, please reach out to our team today to discuss options further.

In addition to this, a popular product amongst our clients is our range of aluminium bi-fold sliding doors. These have similar qualities to aluminium entrance doors in terms of their insulation, energy efficiency and security qualities. They are often used to connect the inside of a home with the outdoors, and to increase the intake of light throughout a building and to maximise the outside views.

At Edge, we stock a variety of choices including the Korniche System, Origin OB49, and the Origin OB72. Whichever your clients choose, we will ensure that you can create the perfect solution to match their specific needs and requirements. Which door to choose?

When it comes to strength and durability, both Aluminium and Composite doors are highly robust, and both offer a range of desirable qualities. Their performance rate is almost indifferent, although they each do offer a slightly alternative aesthetic.

Security is a top priority for everyone, and both Composite and Aluminium doors can offer solid security. As we’ve mentioned, all our composite doors have multi-lock systems that make them highly secure and safe. Aluminium doors are known for their unmatched security features and are often chosen for their burglar-resistant designs.

Due to the nature of the material, aluminium doors are highly resistant to extreme weather conditions and do not corrode over time, making them ideal for high traffic areas, homes and buildings located in areas prone to harsh climates. Composite doors, too, are extremely durable due to their multi-layer make up and have the added benefit of replicating the look of timber, if that style is required.

Finally, choosing between Composite and Aluminium Entrance Doors ultimately depends on your clients’ specific needs. Both doors come with unique features and benefits, and deciding which door is right for your building requires careful consideration. Budget and personal taste may be the ultimate decider when comparing the two.

This month, we’ve got a slightly different installation award! H.V Carpentry have done a stunning job at installing our Zest bathroom panels, in a sleek marble finish.

The bath room was quite rundown before the company came in, and designed the room and installed a whole new bathroom from start to finish.

Congratulations to H.V Carpentry and thank you for sharing your installation photos with us!
