Summer is firmly here in the UK, which means many of your clients will be thinking about how to make the most of their outdoor living space this season. If it’s too late for this summer, they will almost certainly be looking towards 2024 and considering  improving their outdoor space for next year after being inspired by friends or spaces they’ve seen in the media.

Whether your clients have small gardens or several acres of sprawling unkempt lawn, creating a comfortable and inviting space to relax and enjoy the warmer weather is essential. Many spaces can be designed to be enjoyed even in the colder months too with a little innovation. In this blog, our knowledgeable team at Edge Building Products share some tips and advice for designing and maintaining your clients’ garden and include current decking and patio trends so that you can ensure you’re staying current and able to offer your client’s the latest design styles.

Designing an outstanding outdoor space:

As tradesmen, it’s not all about the construction. Often you might find that you’re asked for your opinion, advice and experience whilst your clients are trying to decide on where to take their outdoor living space. You can help them by encouraging them to think about the activities they hope to be doing there. Ask them questions like; Do they like to entertain? Do they like al fresco dining or hosting barbecues? Are they looking for a peaceful spot to read or meditate?

Once they have a clear idea of how they want to use the space, you can start to help them plan the layout, from a more informed place. Consider encouraging them to think about separate ‘zones’ for different activities—for example, a dining area, a separate lounge area and a garden bed or flower border. This could be separated using some well-designed fencing. At Edge, we supply  Liniar uPVC fencing systems, which are great external fence solutions as they don’t rot, are easy to maintain and there’s no risk of splinters. In your designs and conversations with your clients, encourage the use of plants, outdoor furniture, lighting, and other features to create a sense of enclosure and privacy to the space.

Maintaining the garden and outdoor space:

Once you’ve created this stunning outdoor space for your client, keeping it looking its best will require care and maintenance. We all know that gardens need tending to, more so in the summer months, from watering, weeding, pruning, deadheading blooms and fertilising as needed.

Many of our outdoor products used to create stunning spaces are made using low maintenance and easy to clean materials, such as our Triton composite decking range, or our Liniar uPVC fencing previously mentioned. Warm soapy water, and a sponge or brush will lift any mud, bird droppings or spilt drinks or food.

Choosing the right decking or patio material

The material you choose for your decking or patio can have a big impact on the look and feel of your clients outdoor space. Popular choices include wood, composite, stone, and concrete. However, more recently, sustainable choices and longevity of investment are important factors too.

Each material has its own pros and cons, so encourage your clients to consider factors like durability, maintenance requirements, and cost when making their decision.

For example, wood decking is a classic choice that’s relatively affordable and easy to install, but it does require regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. In comparison, composite decking like our Triton range, on the other hand, whilst more expensive up front, requires little maintenance and is highly durable, it’s likely to last longer than its predecessor.

Planning for year-round use:

If your clients want to get the most out of their outdoor living space, consider how they can use it year-round. In the summer, it’s easier to enjoy the warm weather through dining outdoors, lounging in the sun, or entertaining friends and family. Thinking ahead to the autumn months, encourage your clients to add some functional features like, lighting, outdoor heaters or rustic looking fire pits to extend their outdoor season.

You could even suggest constructing an undercover space in an area of the garden which can be enjoyed by your client across the seasons, acting as a stylish shady escape from the sun in the summer months whilst also a space to sit outdoors in the colder months nestled by a heater and watching rain fall. At Edge, we offer a variety of cladding options which can add a practical and stylish finish to outdoor fixtures.

Creating an outdoor living space that can be enjoyed all year round takes a bit of planning and forward thinking, but the rewards are well worth it. We hope this blog has inspired you with some tips to help you work with your clients, present and future, to create  beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces that they’ll love spending time in for years to come, and that you can be proud of.

As we know, garden rooms have emerged as a popular trend in the realm of home improvement and design in recent years. These versatile spaces offer homeowners a unique opportunity to create an extension of their living environment, seamlessly blending the beauty of nature with the comfort of indoor living. In this blog post, we will explore the latest developments in garden room design in 2023, with a specific focus on rooflights, cladding, windows, and doors. Let’s delve into the world of garden rooms and discover how they can transform both your home and your connection to the great outdoors.

Rooflights: Bringing Natural Light to Life

We’re seeing that rooflights have become an increasingly popular feature in garden rooms, allowing abundant sunlight to flood the space and create a bright and airy atmosphere. Our innovative skylights are designed to optimise energy efficiency while offering unobstructed views of the sky above. With advancements in technology, smart rooflights have also gained traction, enabling homeowners to control light levels and ventilation remotely. Whether you desire a cosy reading nook or an inspiring home office, rooflights are an ideal addition to maximise the benefits of natural light in your garden room.

Cladding: Harmonising with Nature

Garden room cladding has seen a transformation in recent years, embracing sustainable and aesthetically pleasing materials. From traditional timber-effect Fibre Cement cladding to composite and PVC options, cladding choices now prioritise eco-friendly solutions that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Fibre Cement cladding, for instance, provides an authentic appeal, and PVC cladding offers durability and low maintenance. Homeowners can choose from a variety of finishes, textures, and colours to create a garden room that perfectly complements their existing architecture and landscape. By carefully selecting the cladding material, garden rooms can seamlessly merge with the outdoor environment, enhancing their visual appeal and connection to nature.

Windows: Framing Scenic Beauty

Windows serve as the eyes of a garden room, allowing the outside world to become an integral part of the indoor space. Recently, window design has evolved to maximise views and promote energy efficiency. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows have gained popularity, providing uninterrupted panoramas of gardens, patios, or scenic landscapes. These expansive windows not only flood the room with natural light but also establish a strong visual connection with the surrounding nature. To enhance energy efficiency, double or triple glazing with advanced insulation properties is often used, ensuring a comfortable and thermally efficient environment throughout the year.

Doors: Seamlessly Transitioning Indoors and Outdoors

The choice of doors is crucial in creating a seamless transition between the garden room and the outdoor space. In 2023, homeowners have a wide array of options, ranging from traditional hinged doors to sleek sliding or bi-fold systems. Sliding doors with slim frames have gained significant popularity as they provide unobstructed views and allow natural light to penetrate deep into the room. Bi-fold doors, on the other hand, offer flexibility by folding away to create a wide opening that blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Additionally, advancements in door technology have improved thermal insulation and security features, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment inside the garden room.

Garden rooms have become a highly sought-after addition to homes, offering a harmonious blend of indoor comfort and outdoor allure. Through the careful selection of rooflights, cladding, windows, and doors, homeowners can create a space that seamlessly connects them to nature while enjoying the comfort and functionality of an indoor environment. As garden rooms continue to evolve, embracing sustainable materials and innovative design solutions, they empower individuals to make the most of their outdoor spaces, enhancing both their well-being and the value of their properties in the process.

Your outdoor space is an extension of your home, and decking and fencing are great ways to enhance an outdoor living area’s aesthetic appeal while providing functionality and privacy. With the many advances in design and technology, new designs are emerging. As we are firmly now into the best of the weather, we look ahead to the second half of 2023 and explore some of the decking and fencing trends taking gardens by storm.

Why choose decking over patio?

Decking has been proven to increase a property’s value whilst offering more outdoor space, so can offer a positive return on investment. Decking is also a great option for gardens with uneven terrain because they are built above and over ground as opposed to directly on top of it, like patios. This way there is minimal ground preparation for decking compared to patio laying.

Whilst decking is commonly more expensive than patio, it is widely customisable to match design aesthetic goals and styles.  It is worth bearing in mind that decking does have a shorter lifespan than traditional patio. However, with regular maintenance and care by sealing, cleaning and staining, your clients can ensure their decking will have the best chance at a long life.

Sustainability

Sustainability has been an essential trend in home design, and it’s no different in decking and fencing. Homeowners and business owners have a greater appreciation for sustainable materials, and this trend is set to continue. In 2023 we will see more traditional timber alternatives such as bamboo and composite decking materials that have fantastic durability and low maintenance.

Whilst timber may be a popular alternative due to its sustainability, UPVC decking such as the Triton Decking Range available at Edge Building Products is longer lasting than wooden alternatives, and is available in wood grain effects, offering a similar finish but with a better ROI.

Unique Decking Shapes

In recent years, the demand for unique decking shapes has increased significantly, going beyond the traditional square decks.  This trend has resulted in homeowners seeking more imaginative and personalised outdoor living spaces. In 2023, curved and rounded shapes that blend into the surrounding landscape are on-trend, blending into the surrounding landscape and creating visually appealing and unique spaces. One reason for this shift is that square decking can often appear monotonous and uninspiring. Decking is being increasingly used in certain, specific areas of the garden, such as around a hot tub, fire pit or seating area. Homeowners can now customise and create their perfect outdoor living space, which not only makes their home stand out but also reflects their personality and preferences. Ultimately, the demand for unique decking shapes is here to stay, as more homeowners value customization and uniqueness in their homes.

At Edge Building Products we stock a variety of clips, screws, and corner profiles to assist with your decking design and installation.

Darker, natural finishes

This year we are seeing shades of grey dominating outdoor materials from fencing to decking. In recent years, homeowners have increasingly been opting for darker shades in their fencing and decking choices, and for good reason.

One of the most pressing reasons is their ability to mask dirt and grime more effectively than lighter options, which can become visibly dirty within a short period. Additionally, darker colours are known to absorb heat, meaning that they can keep the space warm and comfortable even on chilly nights, making them an excellent choice for those who love to entertain outdoors.

Lastly, darker shades have a timeless appeal, making them an evergreen staple of home design that homeowners can rely on for years to come. All in all, the widespread adoption of dark shades in fencing and decking reflects a growing appreciation for aesthetic appeal, durability, and practicality in outdoor spaces. Both our Triton and Composite decking ranges include darker styles to meet 2023 trends.

Fencing with a purpose:

Fencing’s primary aim was to define a space’s boundaries, but in 2023, it’s much more than that. A hot fencing trend for 2023 is privacy focused, panelled designs which shut out the outside world. More and more, people are looking for a way to escape the outside world, to switch off and relax. One of 2023’s fencing trends focuses on privacy, nobody wants neighbours leering over the fence when they’re trying to unwind!

In 2023, enclosing decking areas with railings and fencing is becoming popular. At Edge you can match your uPVC decking with uPVC fencing to create a stylish, cohesive private outdoor area, or choose contrasting decking and fencing colourways, we can offer both.

Edge Building Products stocks stylish and practical Liniar uPVC fencing. Available in 36 foils, Liniar uPVC fencing systems are easy to install, with no risk of splinters, and they are low maintenance because they don’t rot. The system is made from 84.75% recycled, 100% lead-free uPVC and so has the environment in mind. Liniar fencing systems are manufactured in the UK, keeping their carbon footprint low.

Smart decking

This year we expect to see an increase in smart decking that incorporates technology into our outdoor spaces. Smart decks, including lighting, motion sensors, and sound systems, offer an elevated outdoor experience, all whilst adding value to a property.

With the integration of sophisticated lighting options, motion sensors, and sound systems, homeowners can create a truly immersive outdoor experience. With smart lighting, homeowners can set the mood for their outdoor space to match their desired ambiance, while motion sensors can detect movement and turn lights on or off automatically, providing added safety and convenience.

The integration of sound systems allows homeowners to enjoy their favourite music or podcast while outside, making it the ultimate space for relaxation.

With the development of communication technology, we can now have decks that can withstand any extreme weather conditions, such as rain, making them safer and comfortable to use.

In conclusion, it is evident decking and fencing trends are ever evolving, and as we make our way through 2023, there’s a clear shift towards more environmentally responsible choices and innovative design ideas. Whether homeowners are looking to make a statement or add practicality, it’s necessary to stay up-to-date with the latest trends to create outdoor spaces for your clients that are reflective of our lifestyles.

We’ve all noticed that the cost of living crisis has been a topic of concern in recent years, with rising expenses impacting individuals and communities. In this blog we’ll delve into how this crisis has an impact on the building industry, exploring both positive and negative aspects. From increased demand for affordable housing to rising material costs, we will examine the consequences of the cost of living crisis on the building sector. At Edge, we like to remind each other of Winston Churchill’s famous words, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going!’

Positive Impact: Increased Demand for Affordable Housing

One notable positive impact of the cost of living crisis on the building industry is the increased demand for affordable housing. As living expenses rise, many individuals and families struggle to find suitable housing within their means. This has created an opportunity for builders and developers to focus on constructing affordable housing options.

Builders and developers are now actively seeking innovative solutions to address this demand, such as implementing cost-effective construction methods, utilising sustainable materials, and embracing modular or prefabricated construction techniques. These efforts not only fulfil an essential societal need but also foster the growth of the building industry by providing a new market segment.

Negative Impact: Escalating Material Costs

Unfortunately, the cost of living crisis has also introduced challenges for the building industry, particularly in the form of escalating material costs. As the prices of raw materials, such as timber, steel, and concrete, continue to surge, builders and contractors face significant cost overruns.

The increasing material costs not only impact the profitability of construction projects but also contribute to rising home prices. For potential homeowners already struggling with the cost of living crisis, these inflated prices can further hinder their ability to purchase a home. Moreover, the construction of affordable housing is particularly affected, as limited budgets may not be sufficient to cover the higher material expenses, potentially leading to project delays or reduced housing supply.

Positive Impact: Emphasis on Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

Amid the cost of living crisis, the building industry has experienced a positive shift towards sustainability and energy efficiency. As energy bills constitute a significant portion of living expenses, homeowners and builders alike recognise the importance of energy-efficient homes.

This focus on sustainability has driven research and innovation in green building practices, leading to advancements in insulation systems, renewable energy integration, and smart home technology. Builders are now incorporating energy-saving features into their designs, such as solar panels, high-efficiency appliances, and improved insulation, thereby reducing long-term living costs for homeowners.

Negative Impact: Affordability Constraints on Construction Workforce

The cost of living crisis has created challenges for the construction workforce, affecting both recruitment and retention. As living expenses increase, construction workers often face difficulties in finding affordable housing near their worksites. This can lead to labour shortages and hinder the progress of construction projects.

Moreover, the affordability constraints can discourage potential individuals from pursuing careers in the construction industry. This shortage of skilled labour further contributes to project delays and increased labour costs. To counteract this issue, the industry needs to address the affordability concerns of construction workers, explore housing incentives or partnerships with local authorities, and invest in training programs to attract and retain talent.

Cost of Living | Impact on the Building Industry | Construction Worker

The cost of living crisis has undoubtedly impacted the building industry, both positively and negatively. On the positive side, it has increased the demand for affordable housing, driving builders to find innovative solutions to provide suitable housing options. Additionally, there has been an increased emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency, benefiting homeowners in the long run.

However, the industry also faces challenges, such as escalating material costs and affordability constraints on the construction workforce. These factors can lead to higher construction expenses, increased housing prices, and labour shortages.

Moving forward, it is crucial for the building industry to adapt to the changing landscape by prioritising affordability, sustainable practices, and efficient construction methods. Collaborative efforts between builders, policymakers, and communities are necessary to address the cost of living crisis and ensure that housing remains accessible and affordable for all.

At Edge, we’re committed to providing you with exceptional service through these times, by providing product expertise, competitive prices and low maintenance products; to ensure you can finish your projects to a high standard, and with increased sustainability and efficiency.
