Introduction to Cladding
Cladding is an exterior finishing system used in construction to decorate or protect walls and it has become increasingly popular in recent years, instantly transforming a building or outdoor space. It typically comes in different colours and styles and can be made using a wide range of materials, including wood, PVC, metal, and fibre cement.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of cladding is that it enhances a building’s external appearance, making it more appealing aesthetically and driving up its value, while concealing soiled or marked materials underneath. This is becoming a hot choice for homeowners who are looking to revamp or improve an existing building, during a time where housing prices are at an all-time high.
Cladding also provides an additional layer of insulation, which can help regulate a building’s temperature, saving energy and associated heating and cooling costs. Furthermore, a cladded exterior wall can improve a building’s protection from the elements.
What is Fortex Cladding and what are the advantages of using this brand?
Fortex Cladding is one of our leading cladding products, readily available in anthracite, it is one of the most in-demand colourways for cladding and external fittings such as doors and windows, creating a contemporary look and feel to a property.
Fortex Cladding is a high-quality PVC cladding that boasts excellent performance, long-lasting durability, and a beautiful finish. PVC itself is a widely used material in the construction industry for many reasons including its sustainability, high durability and quality. PVC is manufactured to meet strict quality standards and yet is low maintenance to manage and easy to install.
The Fortex Cladding System comes with a 10-year guarantee, and it can withstand the toughest environmental conditions. It is also produced with sustainability in mind and is made using lead-free materials. Moreover, Fortex Cladding is cost-effective and easy to install, cutting down on labour and installation costs.
Why is Fortex Cladding so popular?
Fortex has been designed to mimic natural wood, with an attractive embossed wood effect finish, offering a stylish and affordable alternative for those looking for timber effect cladding without the maintenance hassles associated with wood.
The cladding is UV resistant, will not rot, warp or discolour, making it the perfect choice for builders and renovation experts alike, as well as cost-conscious homeowners. As a leading supplier of building materials, we can provide Fortex Cladding in different sizes, styles, and colours, including the popular anthracite finish that’s taken the market by storm.
When looking at the various cladding brands we offer here at Edge Building Products, including Shiplap, Fibre Cement and Open V cladding, Fortex sits around the mid-range price point, so is an accessible option for many.
The rise of Anthracite and other colours available for cladding:
One of the reasons cladding has soared in its popularity is due to the variety of colour options available, allowing your clients to inject a hint of their personality and style into their home design, easily. The Fortex Cladding system is available in 10 colours including anthracite grey. We have a short video overview on our YouTube channel, which you can watch here.
Anthracite is a relatively new and trending colour that has become increasingly popular in recent years. The colour’s characteristics feature a dark grey tint, with hints of blue or green depending on the light’s direction. Anthracite’s popularity has compelled manufacturers to produce cladding panels in this hue, fulfilling the demand from architects, builders, and homeowners seeking to make a structural statement.
This unique, dark shade of grey is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it also provides numerous benefits to homeowners, including its ability to blend in seamlessly with almost any type of architectural style. From traditional to modern, anthracite grey complements any design and creates a stunning contrast against light-coloured walls.
In addition to its versatility, anthracite grey also provides practical benefits. As a dark shade, it is less prone to showing dirt and stains, making it a low-maintenance option. This also means that it maintains its fresh and clean look for much longer than other lighter shades.
Another advantage of anthracite grey is its energy efficiency. In areas with hot climates, this colour absorbs less heat than lighter shades, reducing the amount of energy required to cool down a home. This can lead to significant savings on electricity bills and a more environmentally-friendly home.
Aside from its practical benefits, anthracite grey may also add value to a home. With its sleek and modern look, an anthracite grey-clad house can stand out in the market and attract potential buyers. An added bonus is the fact that anthracite grey can increase the curb appeal of a home, making it more attractive to passers-by and visitors.
Black vs anthracite:
Black has been used in the construction industry for decades, and is popular for similar reasons to anthracite grey, its ability to create a striking contrast against lighter colours, yet until recent years was most commonly used in roofing.
Much like anthracite grey it can help to create different styles within a building, for example, when paired with brick or stone it can complete a traditional look, yet when matched with metal or glass, a more modern look and feel is created. It does appear however that in the UK, anthracite grey has the edge over black in the current market, with the former being more of a styling choice for cladding, windows and doors. Anthracite does retain many of its desired characteristics and can project more of a luxury feel as a result.
Consistency is key, and at Edge, you’ll be pleased to discover that you can purchase most of our products in Anthracite Grey as well as Black. From guttering and window trims to roof lanterns and silicone, we’ve got it covered, we’re committed to serving you and making your life easier so you can continue to create striking, quality projects for your clients.

Whether you’re installing new roofing, fencing, or decking, we have the materials you need to get the job done right, first time.
Our products are reinforced with tough, durable fibres that provide added strength and longevity. You can trust that our products will hold up to the toughest conditions, ensuring that your finished project not only looks great, but also lasts for years to come.
Our Product Offering:
At Edge Building Products, we are proud to offer an extensive range of products designed to support all your building needs, whether it is for a larger building renovation or a singular, smaller project, we’ve got you covered.
We supply a variety of external cladding, which has become a popular option for existing home renovations and building design. Our range includes Shiplap Cladding, Open V Cladding, PVC Cladding Trims and both Fortex and Fibre Cement Cladding Systems. In addition to our external cladding range, we also offer interior cladding systems too.
Fascia and soffits are both components of a building’s exterior that are often overlooked by the homeowner, but their importance in protecting a building by offering support for the roof’s gutters is paramount. Without fascia and soffits, rainwater can seep into the roof structure, entering the internal structure of the building and cause rot and other damage. We supply a wide range of both fascias and soffits, which can be sprayed to match any RAL or BS colour and are low maintenance and easy to install. Give us a call on 0345 021 3333 and let us know what colour you are looking for, we’ll be happy to help.
Composite decking is one of our popular products with more and more people looking at maximising their outdoor space in the wake of the Covid lockdowns. We offer both our signature, non-slip and reversible composite decking range, as well as the Triton Decking Range.
Speaking of outdoor space, we also offer an innovative range of Linear uPVC fencing systems made from lead-free window grade, durable uPVC. With 36 stocked foils, and over 3000 combinations available, our fencing systems can be either from stock or made to order. We have a comprehensive fencing brochure should you be interested.
If that wasn’t enough, we also stock a variety of doors and windows. From PVC doors and windows, to composite doors or aluminium sliding doors and windows, we have glazing for every project. To browse our full product offering of both windows and doors, visit our website.
Whilst these products form our core offering here at Edge, we offer an extensive range of hardware, fixings, tools, sealants and consumables.

Now that we’ve had a few weeks of good weather, you may be contacted by homeowners looking to refresh their home’s appearance. When it comes to home upgrades the front door is often top of the to-do list. Front doors should look welcoming as this, along with the windows, make up much of the first impression of a building. Getting that aesthetic right tends to be high on the list for homeowners and designers. Plus, picking the right front door adds to that all important curb appeal.
In this blog, we’ll explore three popular options for front doors – composite doors, aluminium doors, and uPVC doors. Here at Edge, we are pleased to be able to supply all three of these styles to any bespoke requirements, including all the necessary door hardware. So, no matter what your client chooses, you know you can rely on us to supply and deliver the door you need.
Composite Doors: Versatile and secure.
Composite doors are a great option for homeowners looking for a stylish door to protect their property while still enjoying a traditional look and feel. Usually featuring a solid timber core, composite doors also include a PVC, laminate or fibreglass coating to protect the core. This combination of materials ensures that these doors are extremely strong and durable, hence their increasing popularity with homeowners. Composite doors are also better insulated than wooden doors by their very nature. As a result of their excellent thermal insulation properties, they retain heat within the home during colder months thus reducing heating bills.
Alongside being low-maintenance and thermally efficient, one of the main selling points for composite doors is their high level of security. They are almost impossible to break down due to how they are manufactured. What’s more, our Windows and Doors team are on hand to advise on the best locking systems, for any front door, to guarantee all-round security.
Composite doors are also popular choice with homeowners as they come in a wide variety of colours and styles which makes it possible to find a door that fits perfectly with the homeowner’s taste and preference. Whether they are looking for something bold and colourful, or they would like to mimic the look of a wooden door, our team at Edge can help you find the perfect door for your client.
Aluminium Doors: Robust and stylish.
Aluminium doors are a top choice for homeowners looking for modern style without compromising on strength and durability. Featuring external aluminium skins, these front doors are highly weather and water resistant. This ensures that the door will not warp, fade, crack or twist under extreme weather conditions. Therefore, aluminium doors can be a great choice for homes near the sea or in highly windy conditions.
Due to the aluminium content, these doors are intrinsically very strong, offering excellent impact resistance. The doors can be made more secure with a high-quality multi-point locking system. We are proud to supply aluminium doors with first-class security looking systems. Our team of Window & Door specialists can help to advise your clients on the right locks for their home.
Much like composite doors, aluminium doors are available in a great variety styles and designs. While anthracite grey is a top choice, aluminium doors can be powder-coated in a durable yet attractive colour of your choice. What’s more, there are lots of glazing options available, allowing your customer to design a truly unique door.
uPVC Doors – a low-maintenance, cost-effective option
uPVC stands for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, a form of plastic that is both durable and low maintenance. uPVC is a strong plastic composite that’s resistant to weathering, rot and corrosion making them long lasting (up to 20+ years) and a worthwhile investment.
These doors have become a popular choice for homeowners because of their affordability and energy-efficiency. They typically come in a variety of finishes and colours, allowing homeowners the flexibility to choose one that suits their home’s aesthetic. From a tradesman’s perspective, they are easy to transport and install as they lighter in weight than traditional timber doors.
Our PVC residential doors are available in a wide range of design and style options from stable, to patio to French doors created with moulded or flat panels, with the option of fully integrated pet entrance options, making them ideal for use as a back door as well as the main entrance to your home.
A range of front doors to appeal to every homeowner
At Edge Building Products, we are proud to be the leading independent provider of high-quality doors and door hardware in the South East. Our products are high quality, low-maintenance, secure and made to withstand harsh weather conditions. What’s more, our team work hard behind the scenes to review measurements and survey drawings to make sure the glazing unit will fit perfectly and include the trickle vents and cills you require.
Our composite, aluminium and uPVC doors are available as fully bespoke units, meaning they are fully customizable with the opportunity to add a feature glass design adding further character to the door through bespoke artistic, colourful options or privacy glass. Plus, as all our doors are ordered to unique specifications to meet the customer’s requirements, we make use of the vast and universal RAL and BS colour schemes.
Edge Building Products offers a variety of doors and door hardware that are high quality and therefore durable. Our door hardware range includes handles, hinges and locks for all the models of door we supply. We aim to make the lives of our client’s easier by stocking everything they might need in one place.

When it comes to enhancing the aesthetics and longevity of your construction or renovation projects, attention to detail is key. That’s where the importance of window trims comes into play. Trims not only protect the edges and corners of your window installations but also provide a finishing touch that can make all the difference in the overall look and feel of your project. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new range of Aluminium Trims! Read on to find out more…
Durable – Powder Coated Aluminium
Our new Aluminium Trims durable and resilient. We understand that when it comes to construction and design, the materials used need to withstand the test of time. Our Aluminium Trims are crafted from high-quality, powder-coated aluminium, ensuring they stand up to the harshest conditions and wear and tear.
The powder-coating process involves applying a dry powder to the aluminium surface and then curing it through a heat process. This results in a tough, long-lasting finish that not only protects the aluminium from corrosion and abrasion but also adds an attractive, sleek, smooth surface that’s easy to clean and maintain. This durability means that our trims are ideal for both interior and exterior applications, whether it’s a residential or commercial project.
Perfect Match to Aluminium Frames
Matching trims to existing frames is crucial for achieving a seamless and cohesive design. Our Aluminium Trims are the perfect complement to aluminium frames, ensuring an integrated look that matches the window style. These trims seamlessly blend with aluminium window frames, door frames, and other structural elements, making them an essential choice for modern, minimalist design schemes.
Achieving a harmonious design is made easy with our selection of trims, as they are available in various sizes; 25mm, 31mm, and 50mm, catering to a wide range of requirements. Whether you’re working on a contemporary office space or renovating a residential home, our Aluminium Trims will effortlessly enhance the overall aesthetic.
Improved Heat Resistance – No Warping
One of the common issues faced with window trims is their susceptibility to warping when exposed to heat or direct sunlight. Our Aluminium Trims are designed to combat this issue. Thanks to their superior heat resistance, these trims won’t warp, ensuring that your project maintains its polished look over the long term.
This makes our Aluminium Trims the perfect choice for areas that are exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperature fluctuations, such as conservatories, or any space with large windows. The peace of mind that comes from knowing your trims won’t deteriorate due to heat is invaluable, and it’s a testament to the quality and longevity of our product.
Ridged Underside to Aid Adhesion
A secure and long-lasting installation is crucial for the success of any project. That’s why there’s a ridged underside into our Aluminium Trims, specifically designed to aid adhesion. This feature ensures that the trims securely grip the surface they are applied to, preventing any unwanted peeling or detachment over time.
The ridged underside provides a firm grip, helping you to achieve a professional and flawless finish. This feature is especially beneficial when working on vertical surfaces or in other areas where adhesion can be challenging.

Windows play a crucial role in defining the aesthetics, comfort, and energy efficiency of your home. They allow natural light to flood your interiors, offer ventilation, and contribute to the overall curb appeal. However, selecting the right windows for your home can be a daunting task due to the multitude of options available in the market. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the process of choosing the perfect windows for your home.
1. Identify Your Needs and Priorities
Before diving into window styles and materials, take some time to identify your specific needs and priorities. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you need more natural light in certain rooms?
- Is energy efficiency a top priority?
- Are you looking for windows that are easy to clean and maintain?
- What is your budget for window replacement or installation?
- Do you have any architectural or design preferences that need to be considered?
Understanding your requirements will help you narrow down your options and make informed decisions.
2. Consider Window Styles
There are various window styles to choose from, each offering unique benefits and aesthetic qualities. Some common window styles include:
- Top-Hung Windows: These classic options are easy to operate and provide good ventilation and security benefits.
- Casement Windows: These windows swing open like a door, allowing for maximum ventilation and unobstructed views. They are great for areas where you want to capture breezes.
- Tilt n Turn Windows: Allows you to keep the window open just enough for fresh air to flow into your home or open it wide like a casement window.
- Slider Windows: Slider windows glide horizontally, making them suitable for spaces with limited vertical clearance. They offer a contemporary look and are easy to operate.
- Picture Windows: These fixed windows are designed solely for providing a clear view of the outdoors. They don’t open but are great for maximising natural light and views.
- Bay and Bow Windows: These types of windows extend outward from the wall, creating a beautiful focal point. They often feature a combination of fixed and operable windows.
Select the window style that complements both your functional needs and design preferences.
3. Focus on Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is a critical factor to consider when choosing windows for your home. Energy-efficient windows can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs while enhancing comfort. Look for the following features:
- Low-E Coatings: Low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings help reflect heat and UV rays while allowing natural light to pass through.
- Double or Triple Glazing: Multiple layers of glass with gas-filled spaces between them improve insulation.
- Energy Certification: Windows with the Energy Star label meet strict energy efficiency guidelines.
- Frame Materials: Choose frames made from materials like PVC, aluminium, or timber that offer good thermal insulation.
4. Assess Maintenance Requirements
Consider how much time and effort you are willing to invest in maintaining your windows. Different materials require varying levels of maintenance:
- PVC Windows: These require minimal maintenance and are resistant to moisture and pests.
- Aluminium Windows: These are very durable, easy to clean and maintain.
- Wood Windows: While aesthetically pleasing, timber windows require regular painting or staining to protect against weathering.
5. Determine Your Budget
Your budget will play a significant role in your window selection process. High-quality, energy-efficient windows may have a higher upfront cost, but they can lead to long-term savings on energy bills. Keep in mind that window replacement is an investment in your home’s comfort and value, so prioritise quality and efficiency within your budget.
6. Explore Window Materials
Window frames are available in various materials, each with its advantages:
- PVC: plastic windows are affordable, low-maintenance, and energy-efficient. They can be manufactured in a wide variety of colours and styles.
- Wood: timber windows provide a timeless, classic look. They can be customised with various finishes and paints. However, they require more maintenance.
- Aluminium: Aluminium frames are lightweight and durable, but they may not provide the same level of insulation as other materials.
Consider your climate, aesthetic preferences, and maintenance requirements when choosing the right window material.
7. Pay Attention to Security
Security is a significant concern for homeowners. Look for windows with robust locking mechanisms and consider adding security features like laminated glass for added protection.
8. Check for Local Building Regulations
Before finalising your window choice, check with your local building regulations. Some areas may have restrictions on the types of windows you can install, especially in historical towns and villages. Ensure that your selected windows meet all necessary requirements.
9. Seek Professional Advice
If you’re uncertain about which windows are best for your home, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice. Window specialists and contractors can assess your needs, budget, and architectural considerations to recommend the most suitable options. Pssst – We can help you with that!
10. Compare Quotes and Warranty
Finally, obtain quotes from multiple window suppliers and contractors. Compare not only the prices but also the warranties and customer reviews. A strong warranty can provide peace of mind in case of any unforeseen issues.
Choosing the right windows for your home is a crucial decision that can significantly impact your comfort, energy efficiency, and overall aesthetics. By identifying your needs, considering energy efficiency, maintenance requirements, budget, and seeking professional advice, you can make an informed choice that enhances your home’s value and liveability. Remember that windows are a long-term investment in your home, so choose wisely.

In a world which is becoming ever more conscious about human impact, eco-friendly construction is more important now, than ever before. As we become increasingly aware of the impact of climate change and the need for sustainable practices, the construction industry is taking active steps towards reducing waste and minimising its carbon footprint.
Construction waste is one of the largest sources of landfill in the world, and current construction practices are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
Thankfully, Edge Building Products is here to offer a range of eco-friendly products that can help you and your clients reduce the impact construction has on the environment. Our eco-friendly products include fibre cement cladding, composite decking, and Britmet roofing tiles which we will cover in this blog. Additionally, we will explore the importance of energy ratings on windows and doors, and how investing in energy efficient products can also make a difference when it comes to designing, building and living with sustainability in mind.
Fibre Cement Cladding:
Fibre cement cladding is an excellent option for exterior cladding on residential and commercial buildings. It is the ultimate alternative to wood, made from a blend of natural materials, including cement and cellulose fibres and it is virtually maintenance-free, which is a huge bonus. It is also fire-resistant and insulating, making it perfect for eco-friendly construction.
At Edge, we supply the Hardie plank system by James Hardie, sold with a 15 year warranty. The benefits of James Hardie fibre cement cladding include:
- Low maintenance
- Weather resistant – it doesn’t shrink, crack or warp
- Fire resistant – non-combustible A2 fire rated
- Lightweight for easy installation – it is lighter yet stronger and easier to handle than many alternative materials
- Eco-friendly
Catering for the modern design aesthetic, it is also available in either Smooth or Cedar (timber like) textures, in 21 colours for Hardie® Plank cladding and finished with unique ColourPlusTM Technology, a multi-coat, baked-on finish that gives a durable, fade-resistant finish that lasts for years to come.
Composite Decking:
Composite decking is fast becoming a popular choice for patios and outdoor living spaces. It is made from a blend of recycled plastic and wood fibres, making it highly durable and sustainable. It doesn’t require any maintenance or painting and has an impressive lifespan whilst being extremely easy to clean.
The decking range offered by Edge Building Products boasts two exciting ranges of composite deck boards, each available on short lead times, so as not to keep both our clients, or yours, waiting.
Our Signature decking boards are capped wood-polymer composite (WPC) decking boards, providing a timeless and classic wood-grain appearance. Edge’s Signature boards have a different colour each side which means you can use one product to create a contrasting decking if required…. Teak & Mahogany are on one board and Silver Birch and Ebony are on the other.
Our Classic wood-polymer composite (WPC) Decking Boards have a contemporary, grooved appearance for that quintessential composite look. Each board has two styles (one with wider spacing between grooves, and the other with a thinner spacing), and because they are reversible, they offer greater design possibilities.
Britmet Roofing Tiles:
Roofing tiles have long had a significant impact on the energy efficiency of a building and an effectively roofed building can help reduce electricity uses and bills.
Britmet roof tiles are based in the UK and made from recycled aluminium and steel, making them a sustainable solution to roofing. The leading tile manufacturer are proud to state that: “Britmet’s myriad of tile profiles are provided with a 40-year weather penetration guarantee* and an estimated life cycle of 60 years, meaning you won’t be in a hurry to replace them! However, if you are concerned for your next generation, our tiles are recyclable at their end-of-life cycle.”
At Edge, we proudly stock the LiteSlate range by Britmet, a composite slate modelled on a real Welsh slate to create not only realistic aesthetics but also performance qualities. Unlike natural slate, composite slate won’t chip or delaminate due to the industry changing design and manufacturing process. Over 90% of the polymers used to create LiteSlte have been recycled and Britmet are proud to announce that in 2021 alone, they ‘recycled over three million kilograms of polypropylene during the manufacturing process’.
The LiteSlate takes into account modern design aesthetics and trends and as such, is available in a range of styles and colours. We stock Ash, Amethyst, Oak, Charcoal, Slate Grey, Sunshine and Sunset, giving your clients the freedom to reach their design ideals.
Energy Ratings on Windows:
Another important factor that homeowners and builders should consider when trying to construct with sustainability in mind is the energy rating on windows. Up to 30% of a building’s heating energy can escape through its windows, which can cause significant increases in energy consumption, waste and expense.
Windows that have a high energy rating can help reduce this energy loss and save on electricity bills. Edge Building Products offer a range of energy-efficient windows in various materials, including aluminium, timber, and uPVC. Windows are graded for their efficiency using an energy-rating scale which ranges from A++ to E.
Here at Edge Building Products, we take pride in supplying the latest technological innovations on the market, including high A+14 energy efficiency options as well as high-security locking systems too. Our extensive PVC window range includes casement windows, French casement windows, flush sash windows, tilt & turn windows, sash horn windows, sliding sash windows, and vertical sliding windows.
All of our windows are created bespoke to the client, so to enquire about windows and obtain a quote, you can email us your specifications at [email protected], or submit an enquiry on our website. You can also reach us by phone at 0345 021 3333.
In conclusion, construction is a crucial industry for economic growth, but it’s vital to move towards sustainable practices to protect our environment. Edge Building Products offers a range of eco-friendly products that help reduce the impact of construction waste and carbon footprint.
Our range of sustainable products offer long-lasting solutions that are low maintenance, and as the construction sector begin to adopt eco-friendly solutions, our communities will be healthier, safer, and more sustainable for generations to come.
To support our clients in being able to achieve this, we have three trade counters across the South East in Chichester, Croydon and Horsham with convenient opening hours for our customers too: Monday – Friday 7am to 4:30pm.
Our clients are at the heart of what we do and we are passionate about going the extra mile to support them where we can, from Next Day Delivery on orders placed before 3pm to dedicated Trade accounts and free hot drinks on our trade counters, we are here for the trade!

When it comes to enhancing your outdoor space, choosing the right fencing system is a crucial decision. Traditional fencing materials like wood may have been the norm for years, but there’s a modern alternative that offers numerous benefits – Liniar’s uPVC garden fencing systems. These innovative systems are changing the game, providing a range of advantages that make them an attractive choice for homeowners. In this blog, we’ll delve into the world of uPVC garden fencing and explore why Liniar’s offerings are worth considering for your outdoor paradise.
Unparalleled Quality and Craftsmanship
One of the primary reasons to choose Liniar’s uPVC garden fencing systems is the commitment to quality. These fences are crafted from window-grade durable uPVC that is lead-free, ensuring that they stand the test of time without any compromise on safety. What’s more, Liniar manufactures its uPVC fencing in a state-of-the-art facility in Derbyshire, UK, boasting ISO 9001 accreditation. This dedication to excellence ensures that you’re getting a top-quality product that will last for years to come.
No More Rot and Splinters
Traditional wooden fences are notorious for their susceptibility to rot and decay over time. This not only compromises their aesthetic appeal but also their structural integrity. With Liniar’s uPVC fencing systems, you can bid farewell to the headache of rot. These fences are impervious to moisture, making them immune to rot and ensuring they remain in pristine condition.
Additionally, there’s no risk of splinters with uPVC fencing. Wooden fences, when not maintained properly, can develop splinters that are not only painful but can also pose a safety hazard, especially for children and pets. When it comes to installing windows, doors, and roof glazing products, the importance of hiring a competent or professional fitter cannot be overstated. While some may be tempted to undertake these installations as DIY projects, the potential risks and complications that can arise from improper installation far outweigh any potential cost savings. Let’s delve into the reasons why it is best to give these tasks to experienced professionals.
1. Expertise and Experience
One of the most compelling reasons to hire a professional fitter is their expertise and experience in the field. Qualified fitters have undergone training and possess the necessary knowledge to handle various types of windows, doors, and roof glazing products. They understand the workings of different materials, designs, and installation methods, ensuring that the job is done correctly the first time.
2. Precision and Accuracy
Installing windows, doors, and roof glazing products requires a high degree of precision and accuracy. Even a minor misalignment or miscalculation during installation can lead to drafts, water leaks, or energy inefficiency. Professional fitters have the tools and skills to measure and fit these products with exact precision, ensuring a seamless installation that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
3. Compliance with Building Codes
Building codes and regulations vary from one region to another. Professional installers are well-versed in local building codes and standards, ensuring that your installation complies with all necessary requirements. Failure to adhere to these codes can result in costly fines and delays, which can easily be avoided by hiring a qualified installer.
4. Warranty Protection
Many window, door, and roof glazing manufacturers offer warranties on their products, but these warranties often come with stipulations regarding proper installation. When you hire a professional fitter, you can rest assured that your installation will meet the manufacturer’s requirements, preserving your warranty. If an issue arises, your warranty will remain intact, and you can rely on the manufacturer for support.
5. Time and Efficiency
Professional fitters have the experience to complete installations efficiently and within a reasonable timeframe. Attempting a DIY installation can be time-consuming and may lead to unnecessary delays. By hiring a competent professional, you can enjoy the convenience of a swift and efficient installation process.
6. Safety First
Installing windows, doors, and roof glazing products can be physically demanding and potentially hazardous. Professionals are equipped with the necessary safety gear and tools to minimise risks during the installation process. This ensures the safety of both the workers and your property.
7. Cost-Effective in the Long Run
While it might seem cost-effective to tackle the installation yourself, the potential for mistakes and subsequent repairs can quickly add up. In the long run, hiring a professional can save you money by preventing issues that may require costly fixes down the line. A well-installed window or door will be energy-efficient, reducing your utility bills over time.
8. Aesthetic Appeal
The appearance of your windows, doors, and roof glazing products plays a crucial role in the overall aesthetics of your home. Professional fitters have an eye for detail and can ensure that your installations are not only functional but also enhance the beauty of your property. A well-installed product will seamlessly blend with your existing architectural design.
9. Customisation
Professional fitters can often provide custom solutions to meet your specific needs. They can tailor installations to fit unique architectural features or design preferences, ensuring that you get the results you desire. DIY installations may not offer the same level of customisation and flexibility.
10. Peace of Mind
Perhaps the most significant advantage of hiring a competent professional for window, door, and roof glazing installations is the peace of mind it provides. Knowing that your investment is in capable hands allows you to relax and enjoy the benefits of your new products without worrying about potential problems arising from subpar installation.
FENSA Registered – What does this mean?
Having a FENSA registered window fitter means that they will fit your doors and windows, compliant with building regulations and registered with the local council. These certificates are essential when selling your home. Read more about the importance of FENSA certificates on their website.
The decision to hire a competent or professional fitter for the installation of windows, doors, and roof glazing products is a wise investment in the long-term well-being and efficiency of your home. The expertise, precision, compliance with regulations, and peace of mind that professionals bring to the table far outweigh any short-term cost savings associated with DIY installations. When it comes to your home, it’s best to trust the experts to ensure that your windows, doors, and roof glazing products are installed correctly, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of your property.

We all understand the importance of creating beautiful and customisable finishes for our clients. Whether you’re working on a house renovation for a client, building a new home from scratch or fitting out a commercial building, the property owner will want every element of their new or renovated property to be exactly how they envisaged and designed it to be.
When it comes to windows, doors, and rooflights, customisation options can make all the difference. In this blog, we’ll explore the various ways you can customise these important features for a seamless finish that meet and exceed your clients’ requirements.
Colour customisation
You will almost certainly be familiar with RAL and British Standards (BS) colour matching systems.
For those not in the know, RAL is a colour-matching system used to identify standard colours for paints, coatings, and plastics, whilst British Standard (BS) colours are a collection of colours that have been derived from sets of regulations and standards laid down for the use of industrial colour specifications within the UK.
For a more comprehensive guide to RAL and BS colours, read our blog here.
Options for customising windows, door frames and bi-fold doors:
With so many window options available, it’s so important to choose the right fit for your projects. From casement and bay windows to fix and tilt-and-turn windows, Edge is your one-stop shop for uPVC and aluminium windows and doors, and we also have a range of energy efficient options to choose from.
Your clients might already know what they want, or they may need some guidance from you to help them select the finish that best meets their needs. Aluminium-clad windows, for example, offer both strength and durability, while timber windows offer a more natural aesthetic. Double or triple glazed windows with argon or krypton gas-filled cavities are good at preventing heat loss whilst reducing outside noise and increasing privacy.
For that all-important colour, RAL and BS colours are used to ensure consistency throughout a build project, enabling architects and designers to create designs with confidence. By referencing these standardised colour charts, professionals can be sure that they have accounted for all necessary shades or textures before beginning a job. Our Anthracite Grey glazing is a perennial favourite among homeowners. We also provide a range of piping, cladding, panels and finishing in the same Anthracite Grey to help you maintain that consistency, ordered directly from us. We can also provide custom-made aluminium window frames in any RAL colour.
Finishing touches add a special, unique touch to a project, and when it comes to customisation, this is an important element to consider. For example, you or your clients might choose to add decorative glazing to your windows or doors, or you might add a handle or lock that complements the overall aesthetic of the project. These small details can make a big difference to the finished product.
In terms of uPVC windows, at Edge, we’ve got you covered. Our range is the widest on the market, we pride ourselves on offering the most technologically advanced uPVC windows, whilst incorporating the latest innovations for noise reduction.
Are your clients looking to add a touch of elegance to their living space or have they been inspired by the trends that are taking the housing market by storm? Check out our selection of bi-folding and sliding doors, available from industry leading, trusted brands like Origin and Korniche. This style of door has become incredibly popular among homeowners over recent years as they seamlessly connect kitchens and living rooms to outdoor patios and lawns. We have a wide range to choose from including the Korniche System, Origin OB49 and OB72. All of our doors are bespoke and engineered to meet the highest standards of quality, performance, and security with multi-point locking systems.
We also offer a range of PVC and Aluminium Sliding doors. Our modular locking systems make our PVC sliding doors one of the most secure on the market, while the multi-wheeled ‘air-glide’ system ensures smooth and silent operation. Our range of Aluminium sliding doors create an effective thermal transmittance barrier between the cold air outside and the warm air inside (or vice versa), through advanced profile technology.
We offer your clients the option to enhance the overall security of the door with glazing, multi-point locking, and door restrictor hinges. Where possible the RAL and BS colour systems can be made to match.

Working with a supplier:
When it comes to customization, working with a supplier who can meet your needs is crucial. Condensation on windows can be a persistent and annoying problem in many homes. Not only does it obstruct your view, but it can also lead to mould growth and damage to your windowsills and frames if left unchecked. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to stop condensation on windows and maintain a healthier indoor environment. In this blog, we’ll explore these methods in detail, ensuring that you can enjoy clear, dry windows year-round.
Understanding why condensation happens
Before we delve into the solutions, it’s important to understand why condensation occurs in the first place. Condensation is the result of warm, moist air coming into contact with cooler surfaces. When the warm, moisture-laden air cools down upon reaching the cold glass of your windows, the water vapor it carries condenses into tiny water droplets on the window’s surface.
Now, let’s move on to the practical steps to eliminate this common problem.
Maintain Proper Ventilation
One of the main reasons for condensation is insufficient ventilation. To combat this, ensure proper airflow in your home. Here’s how:
- Use exhaust fans: Utilise exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom to remove excess moisture at the source.
- Open windows: When weather permits, open your windows regularly to let fresh air circulate through your home, reducing humidity levels.
- Install a ventilation system: Consider installing a whole-house ventilation system to exchange indoor and outdoor air regularly.
Use a Dehumidifier
- A dehumidifier is a valuable tool for reducing indoor humidity levels. It works by removing excess moisture from the air, helping to prevent condensation on your windows. Place a dehumidifier in areas where moisture tends to accumulate, such as basements, bathrooms, or laundry rooms.
Adjust Indoor Humidity Levels
Maintaining the right indoor humidity levels is essential in preventing window condensation. Aim to keep your indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. You can measure humidity using a hygrometer, readily available at most hardware stores. To control humidity:
- Use a humidifier: During dry winter months, a humidifier can add moisture to the air, helping to prevent excessively dry conditions that can lead to condensation.
- Limit houseplants: While plants can improve indoor air quality, they also release moisture into the air. Consider reducing the number of plants in rooms with condensation issues.
Insulate Your Windows
Improperly insulated windows can be a major contributor to condensation. To improve insulation:
- Install weather stripping: Apply weather stripping around the edges of your windows to seal any gaps here warm, moist air might enter.
- Upgrade to double-glazed windows: Double-glazed windows have two layers of glass with a sealed space in between, providing better insulation and reducing the likelihood of condensation.
Use Window Film or Insulation Kits
- Window films and insulation kits are affordable solutions that can help reduce condensation by creating an additional barrier between your indoor space and the cold outdoor air. These options are especially useful for older, single-pane windows. Window film is a transparent sheet that you can apply directly to the glass, while insulation kits involve sealing plastic film over the window frame.
Adjust Your Thermostat
- Maintaining a consistent indoor temperature can also help prevent condensation. Try to keep your home at a constant temperature, especially during the colder months. Avoid drastic temperature fluctuations, as they can cause moisture in the air to condense on your windows.
Use Curtains or Blinds
- Curtains and blinds can act as insulation, reducing heat transfer between your indoor space and the cold glass. Closing them at night can help keep the warm, moist air away from the windows, reducing condensation.
Monitor and Address Leaks
- Leaky windows or damaged seals can allow moisture to infiltrate your home, contributing to condensation. Regularly inspect your windows for any signs of damage or leaks, and repair or replace them as needed.
Use Desiccants
- Desiccants, such as moisture-absorbing crystals or silica gel, can be placed in small containers and positioned near your windows to absorb excess moisture from the air. This can help reduce condensation and maintain a drier environment. You can find these on amazon.
Practice Good Habits
Finally, adopting some simple daily habits can also help prevent condensation:
- Avoid drying clothes indoors: Hanging wet laundry indoors releases a significant amount of moisture into the air. Use a vented dryer or hang clothes outside whenever possible.
- Cook with lids on pots and pans: Cooking without lids allows steam to escape into your home, increasing humidity levels. Cooking with lids on helps contain moisture.
Have you got condensation on the inside of your double-glazed glass unit?
This means that the unit seal has failed, and the likelihood is that the unit has deteriorated and can no longer do its job properly. Unfortunately, the only answer to this is to replace the unit. (Pssst, we can help you with that!)
Condensation on windows is a common issue that can be managed effectively with the right strategies. By maintaining proper ventilation, controlling humidity levels, insulating your windows, and adopting good habits, you can enjoy clear, dry windows all year round. Remember that preventing condensation not only enhances your view but also contributes to a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment.

Georgian bars and astragal bars are two distinct architectural elements commonly used in windows and doors to enhance their appearance, add structural integrity, and achieve specific design aesthetics. While they may seem similar at first glance, they serve different purposes and have distinct characteristics. So, in this guide, we’ll let you know the key differences between Georgian bars and astragal bars in detail, touch on their history, functionality, design variations, and practical applications.
One way to remember the difference between Georgian and astragal bars is:
‘Georgian-IN’ – Georgian bars are inside the glass.
‘Astragal-OUT’ – Astragal bars are outside of the glass panes.
History:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars derive their name from the Georgian architectural style, which was prevalent during the 18th century in Britain and its American colonies.
This style is characterised by a sense of symmetry, proportion, and classical design elements, and it heavily influenced window and door designs of the era.
Georgian bars were originally developed to mimic the appearance of muntins in the traditional divided-light windows, which were common in earlier architectural styles.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars have a longer history, dating back to ancient architecture.
The term “astragal” itself is derived from the Latin word “astragalus,” which referred to a type of moulding used in ancient architecture.
Astragal bars were traditionally used to divide panes of glass in windows and doors, providing structural support and aesthetic appeal.
Function:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars primarily serve as a decorative element in modern windows and doors.
These days they are typically manufactured within a double-glazed pane of glass, creating the illusion of divided lights without the need for multiple smaller panes.
Georgian bars do not provide structural support or divide the glass physically.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars serve both functional and decorative purposes.
They are used to physically divide the glass into smaller panes, providing additional support and security.
Astragal bars can also contribute to the overall aesthetic of the window or door – adding character and charm to a window.
Design Characteristics:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars are typically thin, linear elements made inside a double-glazed pane of glass.
They’re mostly made from PVC, but can also be made from materials like wood, or aluminium and come in various profiles, including flat, contoured, or moulded.
The design of Georgian bars can vary to match specific architectural styles, but they usually create a grid-like pattern in the glass.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars are typically thicker and more substantial than Georgian bars.
Likewise, they can be made from materials like wood, metal, or PVC and can be customised in terms of size and shape.
Astragal bars physically divide the glass into individual panes, with each bar running vertically and horizontally to create a grid-like pattern.
Practical Applications:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars are commonly used in modern windows and doors to achieve a traditional or colonial architectural aesthetic.
They are often found in residential settings where homeowners want the look of divided lights without the structural complexities of true divided-light windows.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars are used in a wide range of applications, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
They are ideal for situations where structural integrity and security are important, such as exterior doors and windows.
Astragal bars are often seen in historic buildings where authenticity and preservation of architectural features are crucial.
Installation and Maintenance:
Georgian Bars:
The glass manufacturer will install Georgian bars into the double-glazed unit.
Maintenance would involve occasionally cleaning the glass – simple!
Astragal Bars:
Installing astragal bars can be more complex, as they involve the placement of multiple bars within a window or door frame to divide the glass. Our manufacturers pre-install this for you, so you don’t have to worry about installing the bars yourself.
Maintenance basically just includes the occasional clean with a damp cloth and inspection to ensure the bars are secure and not damaged.
Customisation:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars offer a degree of customisation in terms of material, profile, and finish.
Homeowners can choose from various bar widths, colours, and configurations to match their design preferences.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars offer a high level of customisation since they can be tailored to the specific dimensions and design requirements of a project.
Architects and builders can select the number, size, and arrangement of bars to achieve the desired look and functionality.
Cost Considerations:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars are often more cost-effective compared to astragal bars, as they are primarily decorative and do not require the same level of structural modifications to the window.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars can be more expensive due to their functional role in dividing glass and the potential need for additional structural support.
Aesthetics:
Georgian Bars:
Georgian bars are best suited for projects where the primary goal is to create a traditional or historical appearance.
They are favoured for their ability to provide the look of divided lights without compromising energy efficiency or maintenance.
Astragal Bars:
Astragal bars are versatile and can be used in various architectural styles, including modern and industrial designs.
They are chosen for their structural benefits and can contribute to a sense of security in a building.
Georgian bars and astragal bars are distinct architectural elements with different functions, historical backgrounds, and design characteristics. While Georgian bars are primarily decorative and mimic the appearance of divided lights, astragal bars serve both functional and decorative purposes by physically dividing the glass into smaller panes. The choice between the two depends on the specific requirements of a project, including design preferences, structural needs, and budget constraints. Both types of bars contribute to the overall aesthetics and functionality of windows and doors, enhancing the beauty and performance of architectural spaces.
When purchasing your windows from Edge, we give you the choice to specify your preference – whether you wish to have any types of bars in your glazing, or a clear view with no bars at all! We’d love to discuss your requirements with you.

As we become increasingly conscious of our carbon footprint and the impact we have on the environment around us, it is important that the construction industry invests in sustainable technologies, and looks to improve these as time goes on.
With the recent rising energy costs for both homeowners and businesses, ensuring that windows and doors are thermally efficient is crucial to maximising energy efficiency. When it comes to glazing products, the importance of this can’t be overstated, and that’s why we, at Edge Building Products, can help you and your clients to achieve thermal efficiency goals through our low maintenance, high quality products.
What is Thermal Efficiency in Glazing Products?
Before we delve into why it is so important, let’s briefly touch on what this actually means both from a structural and practical point of view, but also from a consumer standpoint.
Thermal efficiency refers to how well a material can minimise heat transfer between two surfaces. In the context of glazing products, it relates to how well the window or door can prevent heat loss or gain from your home. The thermal efficiency rating is calculated by examining the U-value (the lower the value, the better) and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) (the higher the value, the better) of the product.
As we move towards a more sustainable future, it’s crucial to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. Heating and cooling our homes contributes to a significant portion of our carbon footprint. By using thermally efficient glazing products, the homeowner can reduce the amount of heat loss that occurs through their windows and doors, and therefore lower energy bills!
The Benefits of Having Thermal Efficient Glazing Products
There are a multitude of benefits gained from having thermal efficient glazing windows and doors that span beyond financial savings and environmental impact… comfort all year round is also an important factor. In winter, when temperatures are low, thermally efficient windows and doors prevent heat from escaping, keeping the inside of the home warm and cosy. Conversely, in summer, the same windows and doors prevent heat from penetrating the home, keeping it cool and comfortable.
Thermal efficient windows and doors can also reduce unwanted noise. Living in a noisy environment can be stressful, affecting the home-owners overall well-being and productivity. Energy-efficient windows and doors, with their advanced insulation properties, can significantly reduce outdoor noise transmission. The specialised glazing and frames work together to create a sound barrier, minimising the impact of external noise sources such as traffic, construction, or neighbours.
Perhaps surprisingly, these products can offer improved security protection due to the fact that most energy-efficient windows and doors are typically constructed with high-quality materials and undergo rigorous testing to meet modern industry standards. This ensures their durability and longevity, making them a worthwhile investment. Additionally, these windows and doors often feature enhanced security features such as multi-point locking systems, laminated glass, and reinforced frames, offering better protection against break-ins and intruders. By upgrading to windows or doors of this calibre, homeowners not only improve their property’s energy efficiency but also enhance their overall safety and security.
Not only do energy efficient windows and doors offer immediate benefits to the property and those within it, but looking forward, investing in energy-efficient windows and doors can enhance the property’s market appeal and value. Properties with energy-efficient features tend to attract more attention and can command higher resale values. Additionally, energy-efficient upgrades may also make home-owners property eligible for various incentives and rebates offered by government programs or utility companies, further increasing its value and potentially reducing your outgoings.
Edge Building Product’s Glazing Products
It is important to remember that advancements in thermal efficiency don’t have to come at the cost of aesthetic appeal. In fact, it is possible for high-performance glazing products to improve both the energy efficiency and the overall look of a building. Modern glazing products are available in a wide range of styles and designs, allowing for bespoke solutions that combine thermal efficiency with aesthetic appeal, a service we are proud to provide to our customers.

In an era where modern buildings seem to dominate, there’s an undeniable charm to older or period properties that stands the test of time. These increasingly rare treasures offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing craftsmanship and character that captivate homeowners and enthusiasts alike. However, the passage of time can take its toll on these properties, requiring careful maintenance and updates to ensure they remain functional and visually appealing. This is where Edge Building products come into play, seamlessly blending modern innovation with timeless aesthetics to preserve and enhance the charm of older properties.
The Allure of Older Properties
Older properties, whether Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian, or even historic farmhouses, display a distinct charm that modern constructions often struggle to replicate. High ceilings, intricate mouldings, ornate detailing, and authentic materials create an ambiance of elegance and warmth that resonates with many. Preserving the unique character of these structures while incorporating modern amenities and efficiency is a delicate balance that demands creative solutions.
The Challenge: Balancing Preservation and Modernisation
One of the primary challenges in maintaining older properties is finding ways to incorporate modern building technologies without compromising their historic essence. This is where Edge Building products come into play, providing innovative solutions designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing architecture while enhancing its functionality.
Windows and Doors: The windows and doors of a period property are often key architectural features. Edge Building products offer custom-designed windows and doors that maintain the aesthetic integrity of the property while improving energy efficiency and security. Replicating the traditional design with modern materials, such as PVC and aluminium, ensures a perfect blend of old and new.
Roof: The roof is another critical component that defines the look of a period property. We supply Liteslate tiles, a synthetic tile that successfully mimics the appearance of classic materials like slate tiles while providing durability and enhanced weather resistance. This ensures that the property retains its historical charm while being well-equipped to withstand the elements. Our lantern rooflights are also brilliant for retaining the period feel, while bringing in more natural light to expose the charm within the property.
Exterior Cladding: Preserving the exterior façade is crucial in maintaining the period charm. Edge Building products provide a range of cladding options, such as fibre cement cladding, and the Fortex range that replicate traditional timber cladding, offering the desired aesthetics without the maintenance challenges of natural materials. This enables homeowners to enjoy the visual appeal of their property without compromising on practicality.
Interior Finishes: Restoring or updating the interior of an older property is a delicate process. Edge Building products include interior finishes like mouldings, covings, cornices, and panelling that match the existing architectural details. This attention to detail ensures that the interior spaces remain true to their original design while incorporating modern construction techniques.
Preserving Sustainability: Our Contribution
In an age of environmental consciousness, sustainability plays a pivotal role in modern construction. As a company, we align with this ethos by offering energy-efficient solutions that contribute to the preservation of older properties for generations to come.
Energy Efficiency: Older properties often suffer from poor insulation and outdated heating and cooling systems – which, when coupled with old, single glazed timber windows can mean that there is a lot of energy wastage. We provide glazing solutions that improve energy efficiency without compromising the aesthetics of the building. This ensures that the property remains comfortable while reducing energy consumption – not to mention saving money!
Longevity & Low Maintenance: The durability and longevity of our product range contribute to the long-term sustainability of older properties whether you’re installing our uPVC products, or our other product ranges. By using high-quality materials and construction methods, these products ensure that restoration efforts are investments that pay off over decades. Unlike traditional building materials, our products all boast low maintenance benefits
Preservation with Innovation: A Harmonious Approach
The preservation of older properties requires a delicate balance between honouring history and embracing innovation. We’re fully on board with this challenge, allowing homeowners, architects, and preservationists to collaborate in maintaining the charm of older properties for future generations to appreciate.
In the UK, older or period properties hold a unique place in our architectural heritage, embodying a sense of timelessness that resonates with us. Preserving their charm requires a combination of passion, expertise, and innovative solutions. Edge Building products rise to this challenge, offering a bridge between the past and the present. By embracing these products, you and your clients can ensure that these architectural gems continue to captivate and inspire for generations to come, blending the best of both worlds into an enduring masterpiece.

Our customers could not only see these products up close but also experience them first-hand through interactive demonstrations. The positive feedback we received highlighted the significance of providing such experiential opportunities.
Our most recent event was the August trade event at our Horsham Branch. We were delighted with the uptake, with many trades arriving for a bite to eat and a good old chat. What sets our trade events apart is not just the showcasing of products but the sense of community they foster. The bonds formed between brands, customers, and us go beyond transactions; they are built on shared interests and the shared dream to elevate the industry.

In the realm of building materials, we’ve found that the quest for sustainability goes beyond mere appearances. The measure of a material’s sustainability isn’t just in its apparent greenness or origins, but in the assessment of its entire lifecycle. Here, we delve into the sustainable potential of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) as a building material. By exploring its advantages in terms of longevity, low maintenance, recyclability, and resource efficiency, we reveal the depth of its sustainability beyond the surface.
The Quest for True Sustainability
As the global consciousness has shifted massively towards eco-friendliness, the sustainability of building materials has come under intense scrutiny. The term “sustainability” is often associated with materials that are natural, renewable, and seemingly environmentally friendly. However, such perceptions can be misleading. The real test of a material’s sustainability lies in its ability to minimize resource consumption and environmental impact throughout its entire lifecycle.
Breaking Down PVC’s Sustainability
PVC, a synthetic polymer, might not immediately strike one as a sustainable choice due to its synthetic nature. However, a closer examination reveals that PVC possesses a range of attributes that contribute to its overall sustainability in the construction industry.
Longevity and Durability: PVC’s resilience against harsh weather conditions and physical stresses is one of its strongest sustainability assets. Unlike some natural materials that might degrade over time, PVC has a remarkable ability to withstand wear and tear, leading to longer product lifespans.
Low Maintenance: The sustainability of a material extends beyond its initial production. PVC’s resistance to decay, rot, and weathering minimises the need for frequent repairs and replacements. This translates to reduced maintenance efforts and costs over the long run, ultimately conserving resources.
Recyclability and Circular Economy: PVC’s potential for recycling aligns well with the principles of a circular economy. Unlike some natural materials that might face limitations in recycling due to impurities or chemical treatments, PVC’s recyclability contributes to a more sustainable waste management process.
Resource Efficiency: The efficient use of resources is a cornerstone of sustainability. PVC’s durability and recyclability together optimise resource consumption, reducing the demand for new materials and minimising waste.
In the pursuit of sustainability in building materials, it’s crucial to look beyond surface-level attributes. The true measure of a material’s environmental impact lies in its entire lifecycle resource efficiency. While PVC might not boast the natural origins associated with “green” materials, its sustainability credentials are substantial.
The longevity and durability of PVC, coupled with its low maintenance requirements, contribute to reduced resource consumption and waste generation. Its potential for recycling aligns with modern circular economy principles, fostering a more responsible approach to material use and disposal. The resource efficiency achieved through PVC’s lifecycle showcases its role as a sustainable building material, one that challenges traditional notions of what makes a material eco-friendly.
As we navigate the complexities of sustainability in construction, it’s imperative to consider the complete impact of our material choices. PVC’s ability to provide longevity, low maintenance, recyclability, and resource efficiency positions it as a valuable candidate in the sustainable building material landscape. By choosing PVC with a keen awareness of its lifecycle benefits, we can contribute to building a more environmentally responsible future.

In the ever-evolving world of home improvement and construction, innovation takes centre stage once again with the introduction of the latest addition to the Fortex cladding range – Shadow Gap Cladding. This remarkable new product, which Edge is now proud to supply, comes adorned with a subtle ‘pine’ embossed finish and features an alluring deep groove between boards. With dimensions of 5 meters in length and 182mm in width, this cladding looks like it’s going to be a game-changer in the industry.
One of the things we find so exciting about the Shadow Gap Cladding is its ability to transform spaces instantly. Designed to be installed vertically, it offers a fresh perspective on home aesthetics. Whether it’s a new build or a renovation project, this cladding is tailored to make an impact. The distinct shadow gap effect it creates between boards adds a touch of sophistication, giving your space a modern yet timeless appeal.
Aesthetics Meet Practicality
The ‘pine’ embossed finish is a nod to the natural world, bringing the charm of wood into your space without the associated maintenance hassles. This embossed finish not only provides a realistic wood-like texture but also ensures that the cladding is robust and able to withstand the challenges of weather and time. The durability of the cladding is further fortified by its uPVC construction, making it resistant to moisture, rot, and the fading effects of UV rays.
The deep groove between boards is more than just an aesthetic feature; it enhances the architectural character of the cladding. The play of light and shadow created by these grooves adds depth to the façade, highlighting the unique vertical installation style. This captivating design element allows you to achieve a balanced fusion of contemporary design and natural elegance.
Versatility Unleashed
Shadow Gap isn’t limited to specific projects; it’s a versatile solution suitable for a wide range of applications. Whether you’re working on side façades, gable ends, bay windows, dormer elevations, or even garden rooms, this cladding has you covered. Its adaptability makes it a prime choice for both residential and commercial projects, offering endless creative possibilities for architects, designers, and homeowners alike.
A Modern Alternative
While timber and render have traditionally been popular options for cladding, Shadow Gap Cladding stands as a modern alternative that combines the best of both worlds. It brings the natural beauty of wood with a contemporary twist, all while avoiding the drawbacks associated with timber, such as maintenance, susceptibility to pests, and weather-related deterioration. Render, on the other hand, often lacks the tactile appeal that the ‘pine’ embossed finish offers, and it can be prone to cracking over time.
Installation Made Easy
Worried about installation complexity? Fret not. The Shadow Gap Cladding range comes with an extensive installation guide that walks you through the process step by step. Even if you’re not a seasoned DIY enthusiast, this guide makes the installation process accessible and achievable. From measuring and cutting to securing the cladding in place, the guide ensures a seamless experience, turning your vision into reality. Be sure to check out our Shadow Gap Cladding Installation Guide while you’re here!
In a world where innovation continues to reshape the landscape of home improvement, the Shadow Gap Cladding emerges as a star player. Its subtle ‘pine’ embossed finish, combined with the attractive deep groove between boards, promises to redefine the aesthetics of any space it graces. The ability to transform vertical installations adds a new dimension to architectural design, making it an ideal choice for a spectrum of projects.
Whether you’re envisioning a cozy garden room or seeking to rejuvenate the façade of your home, the Shadow Gap Cladding stands ready to bring your ideas to life. It bridges the gap between classic appeal and contemporary design, offering the charm of wood without the upkeep.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy and functional building, one aspect that often goes unnoticed, but is vitally important, is the underground drainage system. These hidden heroes silently whisk away rainwater and wastewater, preventing potential flooding and water damage to a property. Let’s take a closer look at each of the components of underground drainage, such as soakaway crates, pipes, bends, branches, gullies, chamber bases, manholes, and channel drainage. Don’t forget, you can share this blog with your clients to help explain the importance of underground drainage for your construction project.
Soakaway Crates: An Unseen Hero
Soakaway crates are revolutionary solutions for storm water management. They act as underground reservoirs, collecting and storing excess rainwater from surfaces like roofs and driveways. These crates then slowly release the water into the surrounding soil, preventing surface flooding and reducing the load on the public drainage and sewer systems. They’re easy to install and are environmentally friendly, making them a popular choice for modern drainage systems.
Pipes: The Circulatory System of Drainage
Pipes are the veins and arteries of your underground drainage system, carrying wastewater away from your property to treatment plants or other designated discharge points. Proper pipe installation and maintenance are crucial to avoid blockages and leaks that can lead to expensive repairs. Choose high-quality pipes that are durable and corrosion-resistant to ensure the longevity of your drainage system.
We’d recommend PVC pipes as they are highly resistant to corrosion, warping and weather resulting from contact with water. We can supply pipes in 3m and 6m lengths directly to your site in the South East.
Bends and Branches: Navigating the Terrain
Bends are essential for smoothly guiding wastewater around obstacles and preventing clogs. Branches, on the other hand, serve as offshoots, connecting additional drainage points to the main pipeline. Properly placed bends and branches enhance the efficiency of your drainage system, preventing backups and ensuring a seamless flow of wastewater.
Gullies: Interceptors of Debris
Gullies are the unsung heroes that trap debris and prevent it from clogging the pipes. They are installed at ground level to capture surface water and direct it into the underground drainage network. Regularly cleaning and maintaining gullies are essential to ensure they function optimally, safeguarding your system from blockages and potential overflows.
Chamber Bases: Building a Strong Foundation
Chamber bases are concrete or plastic structures that form the foundation of inspection chambers. They provide access points to the underground drainage system, allowing for easy inspection, cleaning, and maintenance. Keeping chamber bases accessible and clear of obstructions is crucial for swift troubleshooting and efficient drainage management.
Manholes: The Access Points
Manholes are the gateways to your underground drainage labyrinth. They provide larger access points for maintenance personnel to enter the drainage network, enabling them to inspect and repair the pipes. Manholes come in various sizes and designs, and their covers should always be secure to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
Channel Drainage: Safeguarding Surfaces
Channel drainage systems are designed to protect large surface areas from standing water, especially during heavy rainfall. They consist of long, narrow channels that collect and redirect water away from driveways, patios, and other vulnerable areas. Channel drainage systems are easy to install and maintain, offering an efficient solution for surface water management.
Final thoughts…
Ultimately, the underground drainage system plays a vital role in safeguarding our properties from water-related issues. From soakaway crates to channel drainage, each component plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient water management. Regular inspection, maintenance, and investing in high-quality materials are essential to keep your drainage system running smoothly. Remember, underground drainage is not just about functional utility; it’s about protecting the properties you work on and the environment.
Here at Edge, we support tradespeople by supplying low maintenance, quality PVC underground drainage in a variety of lengths, sizes, and degrees. We know how important it is to have a builder’s merchant you can rely on, so we work tirelessly to maintain high stocks of vital drainage and guttering supplies. This means we can provide next day delivery to your site in the South East using our reliable Orange Vans. Plus we offer competitive trade pricing, so why not get in touch to find out more about what an Edge trade account can do for you, and place your next order for underground drainage with us.

Summer is firmly here in the UK, which means many of your clients will be thinking about how to make the most of their outdoor living space this season. If it’s too late for this summer, they will almost certainly be looking towards 2024 and considering improving their outdoor space for next year after being inspired by friends or spaces they’ve seen in the media.
Whether your clients have small gardens or several acres of sprawling unkempt lawn, creating a comfortable and inviting space to relax and enjoy the warmer weather is essential. Many spaces can be designed to be enjoyed even in the colder months too with a little innovation. In this blog, our knowledgeable team at Edge Building Products share some tips and advice for designing and maintaining your clients’ garden and include current decking and patio trends so that you can ensure you’re staying current and able to offer your client’s the latest design styles.
Designing an outstanding outdoor space:
As tradesmen, it’s not all about the construction. Often you might find that you’re asked for your opinion, advice and experience whilst your clients are trying to decide on where to take their outdoor living space. You can help them by encouraging them to think about the activities they hope to be doing there. Ask them questions like; Do they like to entertain? Do they like al fresco dining or hosting barbecues? Are they looking for a peaceful spot to read or meditate?
Once they have a clear idea of how they want to use the space, you can start to help them plan the layout, from a more informed place. Consider encouraging them to think about separate ‘zones’ for different activities—for example, a dining area, a separate lounge area and a garden bed or flower border. This could be separated using some well-designed fencing. At Edge, we supply Liniar uPVC fencing systems, which are great external fence solutions as they don’t rot, are easy to maintain and there’s no risk of splinters. In your designs and conversations with your clients, encourage the use of plants, outdoor furniture, lighting, and other features to create a sense of enclosure and privacy to the space.
Maintaining the garden and outdoor space:
Once you’ve created this stunning outdoor space for your client, keeping it looking its best will require care and maintenance. We all know that gardens need tending to, more so in the summer months, from watering, weeding, pruning, deadheading blooms and fertilising as needed.
Many of our outdoor products used to create stunning spaces are made using low maintenance and easy to clean materials, such as our Triton composite decking range, or our Liniar uPVC fencing previously mentioned. Warm soapy water, and a sponge or brush will lift any mud, bird droppings or spilt drinks or food.
Choosing the right decking or patio material
The material you choose for your decking or patio can have a big impact on the look and feel of your clients outdoor space. Popular choices include wood, composite, stone, and concrete. However, more recently, sustainable choices and longevity of investment are important factors too.
Each material has its own pros and cons, so encourage your clients to consider factors like durability, maintenance requirements, and cost when making their decision.
For example, wood decking is a classic choice that’s relatively affordable and easy to install, but it does require regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. In comparison, composite decking like our Triton range, on the other hand, whilst more expensive up front, requires little maintenance and is highly durable, it’s likely to last longer than its predecessor.
Planning for year-round use:
If your clients want to get the most out of their outdoor living space, consider how they can use it year-round. In the summer, it’s easier to enjoy the warm weather through dining outdoors, lounging in the sun, or entertaining friends and family. Thinking ahead to the autumn months, encourage your clients to add some functional features like, lighting, outdoor heaters or rustic looking fire pits to extend their outdoor season.
You could even suggest constructing an undercover space in an area of the garden which can be enjoyed by your client across the seasons, acting as a stylish shady escape from the sun in the summer months whilst also a space to sit outdoors in the colder months nestled by a heater and watching rain fall. At Edge, we offer a variety of cladding options which can add a practical and stylish finish to outdoor fixtures.
Creating an outdoor living space that can be enjoyed all year round takes a bit of planning and forward thinking, but the rewards are well worth it. We hope this blog has inspired you with some tips to help you work with your clients, present and future, to create beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces that they’ll love spending time in for years to come, and that you can be proud of.
