We’ve all noticed that the cost of living crisis has been a topic of concern in recent years, with rising expenses impacting individuals and communities. In this blog we’ll delve into how this crisis has an impact on the building industry, exploring both positive and negative aspects. From increased demand for affordable housing to rising material costs, we will examine the consequences of the cost of living crisis on the building sector. At Edge, we like to remind each other of Winston Churchill’s famous words, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going!’

Positive Impact: Increased Demand for Affordable Housing

One notable positive impact of the cost of living crisis on the building industry is the increased demand for affordable housing. As living expenses rise, many individuals and families struggle to find suitable housing within their means. This has created an opportunity for builders and developers to focus on constructing affordable housing options.

Builders and developers are now actively seeking innovative solutions to address this demand, such as implementing cost-effective construction methods, utilising sustainable materials, and embracing modular or prefabricated construction techniques. These efforts not only fulfil an essential societal need but also foster the growth of the building industry by providing a new market segment.

Negative Impact: Escalating Material Costs

Unfortunately, the cost of living crisis has also introduced challenges for the building industry, particularly in the form of escalating material costs. As the prices of raw materials, such as timber, steel, and concrete, continue to surge, builders and contractors face significant cost overruns.

The increasing material costs not only impact the profitability of construction projects but also contribute to rising home prices. For potential homeowners already struggling with the cost of living crisis, these inflated prices can further hinder their ability to purchase a home. Moreover, the construction of affordable housing is particularly affected, as limited budgets may not be sufficient to cover the higher material expenses, potentially leading to project delays or reduced housing supply.

Positive Impact: Emphasis on Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

Amid the cost of living crisis, the building industry has experienced a positive shift towards sustainability and energy efficiency. As energy bills constitute a significant portion of living expenses, homeowners and builders alike recognise the importance of energy-efficient homes.

This focus on sustainability has driven research and innovation in green building practices, leading to advancements in insulation systems, renewable energy integration, and smart home technology. Builders are now incorporating energy-saving features into their designs, such as solar panels, high-efficiency appliances, and improved insulation, thereby reducing long-term living costs for homeowners.

Negative Impact: Affordability Constraints on Construction Workforce

The cost of living crisis has created challenges for the construction workforce, affecting both recruitment and retention. As living expenses increase, construction workers often face difficulties in finding affordable housing near their worksites. This can lead to labour shortages and hinder the progress of construction projects.

Moreover, the affordability constraints can discourage potential individuals from pursuing careers in the construction industry. This shortage of skilled labour further contributes to project delays and increased labour costs. To counteract this issue, the industry needs to address the affordability concerns of construction workers, explore housing incentives or partnerships with local authorities, and invest in training programs to attract and retain talent.

The construction industry is undergoing a technological transformation. In recent years, digital tools have started to revolutionise the way the sector works and is  increasingly being used in a number of ways for on-site operations… from automation through to the use of robotics, 3D printing, virtual reality, and much more.

As these technologies continue to become more sophisticated, cost effective, and accessible, some are quickly becoming essential tools for contractors looking to compete in today’s market.

In this blog we will look at the various digital tools being used on our construction sites, both complex and advanced, but also those that are more widely used, and we look at the challenges these may pose and suggest ways that might help you stay up to date in this time of change.

Digital tools

Firstly, it’s important to understand the different kinds of digital tools currently available.

BIM software is becoming increasingly popular and is enabling construction projects to be planned in a much more efficient and intricate way, with improved accuracy and limited mistakes.

3D printing and prefabrication technology can be used for the production of customised parts and can eliminate human error, speed up the lead time, and mean that they arrive on-site in good time, ready to use.

Robotic arms have started to make an appearance on large-scale, commercial building sites. Whilst these are not widely used yet, these systems reduce the need for manual labour and enable tasks to be completed quickly and efficiently. Additionally, they have safety benefits, often reducing the risk associated with hazardous jobs such as welding or using power tools.

Drones have been making significant strides in the construction industry, making it easier for site managers to effectively manage their projects. Drones help project managers gain a better view of the site from various angles, including hard-to-reach or dangerous areas, making project management more efficient and effective.

Virtual Reality (VR) is another rapidly growing technology in construction. VR allows builders to create 3D models of their projects and get detailed simulations of what the project will look like, enabling them to make better informed decisions. With VR, project managers can identify potential issues before the building process begins, ensuring that the project runs smoothly.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is also making waves in our sector. IoT devices provide real-time information and data that allow managers to monitor the building process remotely. They can also measure distances, track equipment and inventory in real-time, improving inventory management, and reducing the risk of theft. IoT infrastructure can be used to monitor any changes in the structural conditions of a building which may change throughout the construction process, helping to ensure the project is structurally safe from start to finish.

iPads and iPhones are more commonly used, making part of the overall construction process more streamlined, from liaising with team members, outlining jobs and tasks to ordering materials. Much of the ‘in-need’ information is now available digitally for teams to access remotely as opposed to needing traditional paper job sheets to hand.

With the rise of new technologies, it is no wonder that we are seeing a shift in the way construction sites are run.

Staying up to date & competitive

The good news is that there are plenty of resources available as well as guidance on how they can be used. Online courses and tutorials provide contractors with an easy way to understand the basics of these technologies, while more advanced users might consider investing in certifications or qualifications that will help them stand out from the competition.

Challenges

With all these new innovative technologies come challenges and concerns. The most significant challenge is the cost of implementing new technology. Whilst many of these technologies exist, they may not be realistically financially accessible to some yet.

Companies will need to invest in expensive software, hardware, and equipment. However, this cost is often too high for small companies, leaving them at a disadvantage. Arguably, those who can and do enter into this new technology-forward era of construction will likely be better suited to larger, more commercial jobs. If you aren’t in yet the position for this investment, don’t fret, there will always be a demand for traditional, smaller companies and ‘old-fashioned’ manual labour.

Another challenge is the resistance to change. Even though implementing new technology can improve efficiency and productivity, some construction workers are unwilling to adopt the new technologies and will feel threatened by the introduction of it. There are also very real concerns that automation will result in job losses, which may further hinder it’s adoption.

Whilst the industry will continue to evolve and it is inevitable that jobs within it may change too, it will provide individuals with an opportunity to adapt if they are willing, to learn new skills and move with the changing times of the construction industry.

Overall, it’s clear that technology is having a major impact on our sector. Digital tools are changing the way projects are planned, managed and completed – meaning contractors must adapt quickly if they want to stay competitive. By investing in the right tools and resources, contractors can make sure they remain up to date with the latest developments.

With the right knowledge and skill set, there is huge potential for construction companies to benefit from these new digital advancements – so research is key.

When it comes to making improvements to your property, it’s important to consider investments that not only enhance the aesthetics but also provide long-term benefits. One such investment that should be on every property owner’s radar is energy-efficient windows and doors. These windows and doors are designed to decrease energy loss, improve indoor comfort, and reduce the running costs of your home. In the past few years, we at Edge have witnessed a huge demand for better energy efficiency in glazing – so in this blog post, we’ll explore why energy-efficient windows and doors are a smart investment for property owners.

Energy Savings: Lower Utility Bills

One of the most significant advantages of energy-efficient windows and doors is their ability to reduce energy consumption. Traditional windows and doors often allow drafts, causing heating and cooling systems to work harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. In contrast, energy-efficient windows and doors are designed with advanced materials and technology that reduce heat transfer, keeping the desired indoor temperature stable. This means that your heating and cooling systems won’t have to work as hard, leading to lower energy consumption and reduced utility bills. Over time, the energy savings can offset the initial investment cost of these windows and doors.

Enhanced Comfort: Temperature Regulation

Energy-efficient windows and doors play a crucial role in regulating indoor temperature. They act as a barrier against external weather conditions, preventing heat from entering during summer and keeping the cold air out during winter. This helps maintain a comfortable indoor environment year-round. Additionally, these windows and doors often come with features such as low-emissivity coatings and insulated frames that further enhance their insulation properties. With energy-efficient windows and doors, you can say goodbye to uncomfortable drafts, hot spots, and cold areas in your property.

Noise Reduction: Peaceful Indoor Environment

Living in a noisy environment can be stressful, affecting your overall well-being and productivity. Energy-efficient windows and doors, with their advanced insulation properties, can significantly reduce outdoor noise transmission. The specialised glazing and frames work together to create a sound barrier, minimising the impact of external noise sources such as traffic, construction, or neighbours. By investing in energy-efficient windows and doors, you can enjoy a peaceful indoor environment, free from unwanted disturbances.

Improved Durability and Security

Energy-efficient windows and doors are typically constructed with high-quality materials and undergo rigorous testing to meet industry standards. This ensures their durability and longevity, making them a worthwhile investment. Additionally, these windows and doors often feature enhanced security features such as multi-point locking systems, laminated glass, and reinforced frames, offering better protection against break-ins and intruders. By upgrading to energy-efficient windows and doors, you not only improve your property’s energy efficiency but also enhance its overall safety and security.

Environmental Impact: Reduced Carbon Footprint

In today’s world, where sustainability is a growing concern, it’s essential to consider the environmental impact of our choices. Energy-efficient windows and doors help reduce your property’s carbon footprint by reducing energy consumption. By using less energy for heating and cooling, you contribute to the global efforts to combat climate change and preserve natural resources. Choosing eco-friendly materials and opting for products with high energy-efficiency ratings can make a significant difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a greener future.

Increased Property Value and Market Appeal

Investing in energy-efficient windows and doors can enhance your property’s market appeal and value. Potential buyers are increasingly conscious of energy efficiency when making purchasing decisions. Properties with energy-efficient features tend to attract more attention and can command higher resale values. Additionally, energy-efficient upgrades may also make your property eligible for various incentives and rebates offered by government programs or utility companies, further increasing its value.

In conclusion, energy-efficient windows and doors are a smart investment for property owners due to the numerous benefits they offer. From energy savings and improved comfort to noise reduction and increased property value, the advantages are clear. Moreover, by choosing energy-efficient options, you contribute to a sustainable future by reducing your carbon footprint. Tips for working safely and productive when working in hot, cold, or wet conditions.

Construction sites can be a dangerous place to work, especially when the weather is not on your side. Working safely should always be a priority on site but even more so in extreme weather conditions such as rain, wind or snow where accidents and injuries are more likely to occur.

The UK weather is changeable to say the least and in recent years we are experiencing an increase in extreme weather, from severe heat, to gale force winds and  huge volumes of rain. Research from the Met Office’s annual global temperature forecast published in December 2022, predicted that 2023 “will be one of the Earth’s hottest years on record.” June 2023 has already seen some of the hottest days of the year so far with temperatures regularly in the high twenties. In addition, extreme rainfall, similar to that which we’ve experienced in recent years, is directly attributed to the effects from global warming.

Wind, rain, heat and even severe cold snaps can highlight and exaggerate the existing risks posed when working on construction sites, and therefore it’s essential to take precautions and be prepared rapidly changing weather conditions. Britain’s weather is famously unreliable and interchanging after all!

In this blog, we will explore some tips for staying safe in all weathers on site to help you and your teams stay safe and avoid potential weather-related hazards, so you can focus on getting the job done efficiently and safely.

Tips for working safely onsite

Working outside on a construction site can be challenging, particularly during hot summer months. It’s essential to look at and re-evaluate health and safety procedures and policies while working in the sun to prevent serious health issues such as heat exhaustion, sunburn, and of course, long term, skin cancer.

By not following simple guidelines for working in extreme weather conditions, you risk the health of yourself and/or your workers which could lead to long-term sick leave and the delay in client projects.

Tips for Working Safely in Different Weather Conditions | Carpenter constructing roof

The pressure to stay on schedule through all weathers

For construction or project managers, staying on schedule generally is a high-pressure business. However, when you add extreme weather into the mix and the unreliable, inter-changing English weather, that pressure can be heightened. At Edge Building Products, we understand that deadlines change, the schedule may be altered with the weather forecast in mind and so, we are proud to be able to provide a number of services to help ease the pressures of the job. These include:

In conclusion, whilst working on construction sites carries a daily and standard level of risk, when extreme weather conditions like heat, cold, snow, rain or wind are added into the mix, the importance of working safely dramatically increases.

By ensuring you have a weather dependent safety procedure for those working onsite which outlines advice for individuals such as the tips we’ve mentioned above, you will be minimising the risks of accident. Visit the HSE page to find out how to care for your staff on site.

Through following this yourself, working together and looking out for your team members, you can continue working safely and efficiently focusing on doing what you do best and completing the job efficiently, despite challenging weather conditions.

In this blog we’ll explore the importance of project management in construction and how project managers can help ensure a timely and cost-effective build.

As we know, construction is a complex and expensive industry that requires rigorous planning, skilled labour, and a huge volume of materials. It is vital for all involved that each project is executed smoothly and safely while staying within budget. This is where project management comes in!

Why is a project manager required?

In construction, a project manager serves as a crucial point of contact, ensuring that all aspects of a project come together seamlessly, and the role has many responsibilities that will determine the success of a building project.

At construction sites, it’s essential to have a project manager to oversee the work, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure compliance with regulations. Project managers play a vital role in mitigating risks and avoiding costly mistakes. They keep everyone on the same page, help keep things organised and are responsible for the overall planning, coordination, and control of a project, from start to finish. These key factors all come together to achieve objectives while meeting budget and quality goals.

Each construction project is unique and has its own set of requirements and challenges. This is why it’s so crucial to have an experienced project manager who can effectively handle the complexities involved in managing a construction site.

A project manager in construction has responsibilities including; developing and maintaining an accurate project schedule, developing and controlling the budget, communicating with contractors, ensuring that the project complies with all relevant codes and regulations, and negotiating with material suppliers to ensure that the project stays on track. They are also responsible for coordinating and managing all stakeholders involved in the project, such as architects, engineers, construction workers, and other parties to ensure that the project is executed according to plan.

It therefore goes without saying that a skilled project manager is an integral part of any successful project. Their expertise and experience bring order to a complex and constantly changing environment, and so it’s crucial to choose the right person for the role of project management for any building project. Their expertise and experience will help ensure that the property owner’s project is completed, and their investment is protected.

With this said, it is equally as important for project managers to not only choose the right supplier, but to establish a reliable working relationship with them.

How can a project manager work with Edge Building Products to ensure they stay on schedule, reduce costs, and maintain quality?

Working with material suppliers is an essential part of a project manager’s job. The project manager must build and maintain relationships with suppliers, and it’s the supplier and project manager working together that will ensure that the materials received meet the quality standards required by the project at the right time and price.

An experienced project manager knows how to use data and analytics to identify where there may be potential bottlenecks or overruns in the supply chain. They can then negotiate with suppliers to obtain better prices, offer incentives for timely delivery or change orders to reduce overall costs. They can also work with suppliers in leveraging their expertise to improve quality control.

At Edge, we understand how pressurised the role of project manager can be, and we strive to make things as smooth and efficient as possible for our clients when it comes to purchasing from Edge.

Nothing stays the same for long, and the same is true for construction. Each year exciting new innovations are developed to update and improve the landscape of construction. In recent years, green construction practices and highly efficient materials have emerged as key drivers in shaping the future of the industry. These developments hold the promise of creating buildings that are not only environmentally friendly, but also highly efficient and aesthetically pleasing. In this blog, we will explore some of the top trends and technologies that are reshaping the construction industry.

1. Passive design and energy-efficient windows.

The Passive House – or Passivhaus – is an exciting alternative to regular home heating and insulation. Simply put, the house is designed to stay at a comfortable temperature because of it’s excellent efficiency, orientation, natural lighting and ventilation. Ideally, a Passive House would not require artificial heating or cooling, keeping running costs exceptionally low for the homeowner. Not only this, but the Passive House will also have significantly lower carbon emissions and energy consumption than a regular property as the house is generating and retaining heat passively.

If you are considering taking on a Passive House project, start first with the windows. Most household warmth is lost through the windows, but they are an important element of creating a passively heated property. When approaching your next window installation, make sure to pick units that have exceptional glazing and thermal efficiency. Our windows and doors team are here to help you find PVC and aluminium framed windows with excellent efficiency in a range of different styles. Make sure the windows you pick not only let the light in but keep the warmth in as well.

Top tip: Smart thermostats offer your customers full control over their heating system, with insights into energy consumption, to help them pick optimum times to schedule heating.

2. Renewable energy integration in green construction projects.

One of the biggest technological changes to construction has the development of renewable power sources. From solar panels to electric vehicle charging points, renewable energy is becoming a staple in new build constructions. Some truly innovative properties are going off the grid with wind turbines and solar panels to power their properties. These renewable energy sources are generating clean and sustainable power, reducing the household’s dependence on fossil fuels, and therefore reducing the carbon footprint of the property.

Harness solar: Choose a solar energy solution that includes highly efficient batteries which charge during the day, allowing the house to stay off-grid during the evening.

3. Using sustainable and recycled materials.

The construction industry has traditionally relied heavily on resource-intensive materials such as concrete and steel. While these are highly useful and feature a number of benefits, moving towards uPVC and aluminium can reduce the carbon footprint of the build. Both uPVC and aluminium are low maintenance and are highly weather resistant. They are less likely to need replacing, thereby reducing the wastage from a building. Additionally, both uPVC and aluminium can be recycled at the end of its life cycle and brought back into the market as a new product. Here at Edge we specialise in supplying uPVC roofline, cladding, guttering and window trims, as well as aluminium window trims, because of it’s excellent functionality and sustainability.

Recycled materials, such as recycled plastic, glass, and metal, are becoming an increasingly important part of green construction. Recycled materials not only reduce landfill waste, but also decrease the demand for raw materials. By embracing these sustainable alternatives, the construction industry can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute meaningfully to a circular economy.

4. Shop local to promote green construction.

When calculating the carbon footprint of a build, all of the transportation costs must also be included. That’s why as a builder’s merchant we are dedicated to working with manufacturers from the UK, to reduce the transport emissions of each product. Not only it is this good for the environment, but it also allows us to be a reliable supplier as our British manufacturers are not travelling vast distances to make deliveries.

Making use of delivery services from suppliers can also reduce the carbon emission of your build. Rather than many builders out on the road collecting parts, a couple of vans can visit multiple locations, dropping off the day’s building supplies. Reduce the number of cars on the road by utilizing our next day delivery service on your next order.

Did you know? Our lightweight uPVC products also reduce our carbon footprint as they require less fuel to transport than heavier materials such as concrete or timber.

5. Modular construction as a sustainable alternative.

Modular construction involves assembling prefabricated modules off-site and then transporting and assembling them on site. As the majority of construction occurs off site, modular projects are perfect for schools and hospitals looking to expand as disruptions to day-to-day work are minimised.

As modular products resemble a ‘flat pack’ system, many suppliers use recycled materials to create the modules. These sustainable, easy to install systems offer great flexibility for smaller projects, such as garden rooms, sheds, classrooms, and additional office space.

Remember – protect the building with low maintenance guttering and thermally efficient roofing, such as the Britmet Roofing Tiles, offering exceptional performance and style.

Final thoughts…

The future of building lies in green construction practices and innovative materials. New build projects are increasingly prioritizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and low carbon footprint. We strive to provide low maintenance products, supplied by local manufacturers, in materials which can be recycled at the end of their life cycle. Innovations such as Passive design, and an increase in renewable energy integrations are meeting the demand for sustainable and energy-efficient builds as we head into 2025. It is essential for the industry to continue to find ways to reduce construction waste and drive positive change towards a greener future.

Building Strong Connections for Successful Projects

Communication is the lifeblood of any successful construction project. From the initial planning stage to the final delivery, effective communication plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations, minimizing errors, and fostering strong relationships with clients, co-workers, and other stakeholders. At Edge, recognize the significance of clear and efficient communication, and we have implemented various strategies to improve communications with our customers and among our team members. In this blog, we will delve into how to prioritise communication, highlighting its importance and the positive impact it has on delivering exceptional results.

Building Trust and Understanding

Effective communication is the cornerstone of building trust and understanding between the construction team and clients. By actively listening to clients’ needs and concerns, we can establish a solid foundation for successful collaboration. Regular meetings, both in person and virtual, provide opportunities to address any questions or clarifications required, ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

Additionally, prioritising transparency in our communication with clients, providing regular progress updates and discussing any potential challenges that may arise. This level of openness fosters trust and helps to manage expectations, minimizing misunderstandings and potential disputes. By prioritising client communication, we can create an environment where clients feel valued, informed, and involved throughout the process.

Seamless Team Collaboration

Effective communication is equally important within our team at Edge. We believe that the ability to convey ideas, share information, and coordinate tasks is essential for success. This applies to our customer’s site teams too; implementing strategies to enhance team collaboration, such as regular team meetings, digital communication tools, and clearly defined channels of communication will definitely help ‘the boat go faster’.

During team meetings, encourage open dialogue and active participation from all team members. By providing everyone with the opportunity to voice their ideas and concerns, we can foster a sense of ownership and collective responsibility. Furthermore, utilising digital communication tools such as project management software and instant messaging platforms to facilitate real-time information sharing, will ensure that everyone is up to date on project developments.

Clear communication also plays a vital role in ensuring the dependability of team members. By clearly defining roles, responsibilities, and deadlines, we create a sense of accountability within the team. Regular progress updates and clear reporting structures allow us to identify and address any potential issues promptly, minimizing delays and ensuring that the project stays on track.

Engaging Stakeholders

In addition to clients and co-workers, effective communication extends to engaging other stakeholders involved in the construction process, such as subcontractors, suppliers, and the authorities. By establishing clear lines of communication and keeping all stakeholders informed, we can enhance project coordination and avoid potential bottlenecks.

Regular communication with subcontractors and suppliers ensures that everyone is aligned with the project timeline and objectives. It allows teams and individuals to address any concerns or obstacles promptly, reducing the risk of delays and ensuring the quality and timely delivery of materials and services.

Furthermore, proactive communication with regulatory authorities and local communities helps us navigate any legal or permitting requirements smoothly. By fostering positive relationships and open lines of communication, your team can demonstrate it’s commitment to compliance, which will build a reputation as responsible and trustworthy construction professionals.

Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful construction projects. By prioritising clear and efficient communication, teams have witnessed the numerous benefits it brings, including enhanced client relationships, seamless team collaboration, and positive stakeholder engagement. From the initial planning stage to the final delivery, communication plays a pivotal role in minimising errors, managing expectations, and ensuring timely project completion.

At Edge Building Products, we recognize the value of communication and continually strive to improve our communication strategies to deliver exceptional service to you, our customers. By focusing on communication, we build strong connections and lay the foundation for successful projects that exceed client expectations. Whether it’s a timely delivery to site, or our helpful and dependable Customer service team going the extra mile to support you and your project – we’ve put communication at the top of our priorities list!

There’s nothing quite like natural light to make a space feel bright, open, and inviting. Whether you’re designing a new home or looking to update your current space, maximizing natural light should be a top priority. Not only does natural light improve the look and feel of a space, but it can also offer numerous benefits for your health and well-being. In this article, we’ll explore how you can maximize natural light in your property and the benefits that come along with it.

The Benefits of Natural Light

Maximising natural light in your property is an excellent way to create a bright, inviting space while also improving the insulation and energy efficiency of your home. By using glazing, choosing the right type of glass, and incorporating reflective surfaces, you can increase natural light while also enhancing the overall look and feel of your interiors.

One of the most significant benefits to maximizing natural light in your property is the positive impact it can have on your mental and physical health. Exposure to natural light has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress levels, and even boost the immune system. Additionally, natural light can help regulate your circadian rhythm, making it easier to fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning.

Maximizing natural light can also increase the value of your property. Homes with ample natural light are often more attractive to buyers, as they offer a bright and inviting space. Additionally, energy-efficient homes are becoming more popular, and maximizing natural light can be an effective way to improve the overall energy efficiency of your property.

The Benefits of Glazing

When it comes to natural light, glazing is one of the most effective ways to increase the amount of sunlight in your property. By replacing solid walls with windows, doors and skylights, you can let in more natural light, making your space feel brighter and more inviting. However, the benefits of glazing go beyond aesthetics alone.

One of the key advantages of glazing is its ability to improve insulation. When you use energy-efficient glazing, such as double or triple-pane glass, you can prevent heat loss and maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. This not only helps you save money on your energy bills, but it also reduces your carbon footprint and makes your home more environmentally friendly.

As well as insulation, glazing can also help reduce noise pollution. Modern glazing technology can significantly reduce the amount of outside noise that enters your home, making your living space more peaceful and relaxing.

Choosing the Right Glazing

When selecting glazing for your property, there are several important factors to consider. The first is the type of glass you want to use. Single-pane glass is the most basic and least energy-efficient option and should only be used if no other options are available. Double and triple-pane glass are better options as they provide better insulation and can help you maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. However, they may be more expensive than single-pane glass, so it’s important to weigh the cost against the potential benefits.

Another important factor to consider when choosing glazing is the orientation of your windows. South-facing windows receive the most sunlight, while north-facing windows receive the least. If you want to maximize natural light in your home, it’s best to focus on windows that face south or west. However, keep in mind that larger windows will let in more natural light but may also be more expensive to install.

Another glazing option that will massively enhance the natural light indoors is to install roof glazing – our lanterns and flat glass rooflights are renowned for opening up spaces and making them much feel lighter and airier – proving another opening for the sunlight to steam through during the day.

Reflective Surfaces

Apart from selecting the right type of glass and orientation for your windows, you can also use reflective surfaces to enhance natural light in your home. Mirrors, for example, can help bounce light around a room, making it feel brighter and more spacious. You can also use lighter colours on your walls and furniture to help reflect natural light.

Final thoughts

So, maximizing natural light in your property is an excellent way to create a bright, inviting space while also improving the insulation and energy efficiency of your home. By using glazing, choosing the right type of glass, and incorporating reflective surfaces, you can increase natural light while also enhancing the overall look and feel of your space. Whether you’re looking to improve your own quality of life or increase the value of your property, maximizing natural light is an investment that’s well worth making.

Being an independent contractor has some incredible perks, perhaps the main one being that you are in control of your days, you can design a life you love without the restraints of employment. However, there are some down-sides to the self-employed lifestyle and independent contractor trade.

The construction sector is vast, providing ample options for those considering turning to independent work. Perhaps you’ve dipped your toe into the trade and have discovered certain aspects of it such that just don’t interest you, yet you have a skill and passion for other areas. By being self-employed, you have the freedom to accept and reject jobs that don’t suit your skillset or that you simply don’t enjoy.

Working as an independent contractor in the construction trade can be a hugely fulfilling career option but there are some things to consider before making the leap.

As an independent contractor, you have the freedom to choose your projects, work at your own pace and schedule, and enjoy the flexibility of being your own boss. Finding the right clients, managing finances, and staying competitive in an ever-changing industry are all challenges you may face. In this blog, we’ll discuss these and provide you with some tips on how to make it work for you.

Finding work

One of the biggest challenges of working as an independent contractor, (particularly for those who are just starting out on their own), can be finding work and securing contracts. Unlike traditional employees who are usually given assignments by their bosses, contractors must actively look for clients and projects to work on. This can be a daunting task!

It’s important to build a strong network of industry contacts, advertise your services on social media, and maintain a portfolio of your past projects. Registering with directory listings are a great place to start, signing up with Checkatrade, TrustATrader, My Builder and Rated People will all help. Local SEO is also important for service based business, so setting up a free Google My Business account should be a priority to help customers discover you when searching for a construction company. You may also want to consider partnering with other contractors or agencies to pool your resources and share work opportunities.

How do you stay competitive in a ‘gig’ economy?

Firstly, what is the ‘gig’ economy? For anyone who isn’t familiar with the term, this refers to the short-term and often last-minute market within which many independent trade contractors operate.

Much of their work will come from domestic enquiries requiring a quick fix for a singular problem, as opposed to long-term contractors or large jobs. With the rise of the gig economy, it’s more important than ever for independent contractors to stay competitive and relevant in the construction industry.

This means keeping up with the latest trends and technologies, staying on top of industry regulations and standards, and investing in your own (and that of your team’s) education and training.

How can you differentiate yourself from other contractors and position yourself as a sought-after expert in the field? Two great ways to do this is, firstly to build on your reputation through word-of-mouth recommendation….. people trust other people’s recommendations. Can you be their go-to trader? Work on building those relationships! The second way builds upon the first point; your marketing will be invaluable as an independent contractor just starting out.Don’t be afraid to show prospective customers the person behind the brand name. People feel more at ease when they feel like they know who they’re welcoming into their homes, adding a touch of personality to your website and/or directory listings/and or social media pages will pay dividends in the long term.

Tips for managing finance:

As an independent contractor, you’re responsible for managing your finances, taxes, and expenses. This can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not familiar with accounting and business management. To ensure your financial stability and success as a contractor, it’s important to set up a system for tracking your income and expenses, create a budget, and invest in accounting software or professional services to help you manage your finances.

If you haven’t already done this from the outset, you will also want to consider setting up a separate bank account for your business and establishing a routine for invoicing and collecting payments from clients. There are a number of online accounting software companies designed to make all of this easier for the self-employed or small business owner such as Xero and QuickBooks.

If you can, finding an accountant or bookkeeper from the outset is a great solution to ensuring you stay on track when it comes to taxes and the requirements of owning a business or being self-employed which can often be stumbling blocks for first timers.

What are some of the challenges of being an independent contractor?

Although working as an independent contractor offers a lot of flexibility and freedom, it also comes with its own set of challenges. For example, you’ll have to deal with the stress of managing your own business, maintaining your own schedule and workload, and dealing with difficult clients or projects.

Try to ensure you prioritise downtime, to switch off and recharge from the stresses of managing your business. Downtime looks different for everyone, but exercise or socialising with friends and family are good places to start. Additionally, since you won’t have the safety net of a steady monthly income or employer benefits, it’s important to have a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to your work to succeed as a contractor.

Ultimately, working as an independent contractor in the construction trade can be an incredibly rewarding experience, both financially and professionally. By taking the time to build a strong reputation, staying competitive and up to date with the latest industry trends, and managing your finances and workload effectively, you can enjoy the benefits of being your own boss and set yourself up for long-term success in the field. With the right mindset, the right tools, and a lot of hard work, you can make independent contracting work for you.

Construction sites are dynamic environments, often associated with high risks and potential hazards. It is important to prioritise safety on construction sites to prevent accidents and injuries.

In recent years, there have been significant advances in safety equipment and training that have helped to improve safety on construction sites. At Edge Building Products, we’re passionate about the latest news and innovation within the construction industry, so we decided to put all our recent observations together to help inspire building companies who are wanting a more streamlined approach to training, equipment, and health & safety.

Why Safety is the Ultimate Tool Belt for Construction

Construction sites are complex and often involve multiple activities that require coordination and planning. The presence of heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and heights can pose serious risks to workers and visitors. The importance of safety on construction sites cannot be overemphasised.

Here are some reasons why safety on construction sites is crucial:

Prevention of Accidents and Injuries: The primary objective of safety on construction sites is to prevent accidents and injuries. Labourers and visitors are exposed to various dangers, such as falling objects, electrical shocks, and slips and falls. Safety measures, such as protective gear, training, and procedures, can reduce the likelihood of these incidents.

Compliance with Regulations: Governments and regulatory bodies have established safety regulations for construction sites to protect workers and visitors. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in legal consequences, fines and penalties.

Boosts Productivity: A safe workplace is a productive workplace. When workers feel safe and secure, they are more motivated and engaged in their work, which can lead to higher productivity.

Your Reputation: Companies that prioritise safety on construction sites are viewed positively by their stakeholders. Clients, investors, and employees are more likely to associate with a company that prioritises safety.

Latest Innovations in Safety Equipment on site

The construction industry has witnessed significant advances in safety equipment that have improved safety on construction sites. Here are some of the latest advances in safety equipment:

Wearable Technology: Wearable technology, such as smart helmets and vests, can provide real-time data on workers’ health and safety. These devices can monitor workers’ vital signs, detect fatigue, and alert them to potential risks.

Drones: Drones are increasingly being used to survey construction sites and identify potential hazards. They can also be used to inspect hard-to-reach areas and perform tasks that are dangerous for humans.

Advanced PPE: Personal protective equipment (PPE) has come a long way in recent years. Today’s PPE includes safety glasses with anti-fog lenses, hearing protection with Bluetooth connectivity, and gloves with advanced grip technology.

Safety Barriers and Guardrails: Safety barriers and guardrails are essential in construction sites. They prevent workers from falling and protect them from many other risks. New materials and designs have made these barriers and guardrails more durable and effective.

Step Up Your Safety Game: The Cutting-Edge Techniques in Safety Training

In addition to safety equipment, safety training has also advanced significantly in recent years. Here are some of the latest advances in safety training:

Virtual Reality Training: Virtual reality (VR) training provides a simulated environment that allows site staff to practice safety procedures and virtually experience risky events without putting themselves in harm’s way. This training allows workers to develop muscle memory and improve their response to emergencies.

Interactive E-Learning: Interactive e-learning programs provide engaging safety training that is accessible on various devices. These programs can be customised to meet the specific needs of workers and provide instant feedback.

Role Play: Role-play is the use of game-like elements in safety training. This approach makes safety training more engaging and fun, leading to better retention of safety procedures and practices.

Blended Learning: Blended learning is a combination of different learning modalities, such as classroom training, e-learning, and hands-on training. This approach provides a comprehensive and flexible approach to safety training that can be tailored to the specific needs of workers.

What are the benefits of Advanced Safety Equipment and Training?

The latest advances in safety equipment and training have numerous benefits for workers and employers. Here are some of the benefits:

Reduced Accidents and Injuries: The use of advanced safety equipment and training can reduce accidents and injuries on construction sites. This leads to fewer work-related absences, medical expenses, and workers’ compensation claims.

Increased Productivity: When workers are trained to work safely and have access to the latest safety equipment, they are more productive. This is because they are confident, engaged, and focused on their work.

Improved Compliance: Advanced safety equipment and training can help companies comply with safety regulations and avoid legal consequences and fines.

Investing in safety is not only the right thing to do but also a smart business decision that can lead to long-term success.

Introduction to Window and Door hardware

Window and door hardware is an essential part of any security system, but can be easily overlooked by homeowners when selecting the windows or doors for their property.

So what do we mean by ‘window and door hardware?’

In short, the hardware is the component that connects the frame to the wall and provides secure opening, closing, and locking, for the purposes of security.

Hardware types vary depending on the application, and include cabin hooks, lock cylinders, hinges and hinge restrictor stays, latches, handles, knockers, letterplates and spyholes….., to name just a few! At Edge Building Products, we stock a range of all the above.

In this blog we will look at the range of hardware available so that you are fully armed with all the important details when it comes to helping your clients select the right door and window hardware.

What are the different types of window and door hardware available?

Cabin Hooks are used to connect the window or door to a frame, keeping it securely closed. These can also be used to hook back doors or windows to keep them open and to stop them slamming.

Cabin hooks come in different shapes and sizes and can be made from materials such as steel, brass, or zinc-plated iron. The hook portion of the cabin hook is usually curved with a flat end so it can easily fit through the eye of the latch. These hooks have a spring-loaded latch on one side that allows users to open and close the window or door without having to move the hook itself. Cabin hooks are often seen in bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms as they provide the light security needed. They are also ideal for applications such as barns, sheds and other outdoor buildings where traditional locks may not be desired or necessary. Edge BP offers a variety of [cabin locks] in black, brass and chrome from 150mm to 250mm in length and in a variety of widths.

Lock cylinders are an important security feature which are used in locks to provide additional layers of protection against entry to a property. They are typically made from brass, aluminium or steel and feature a cylindrical design that enables the lock cylinder to be inserted into the corresponding lock mechanism.

These are designed so that a key must be used to unlock the door. Additionally, many lock cylinders also feature anti-drill, anti-pick and anti-bump measures, making them even more secure than standalone lock mechanisms. Additionally, some models offer rekeyable features that allow the user to change the key and code without having to replace the entire locking system, which can be costly. Lock cylinders offer homeowners peace of mind and assurance that their property is safe and secure against potential intruders. We sell a variety of sizes of nickel [Euro Cylinders.]

Hinges are an essential component of door and window hardware, providing support and flexibility for the movement of these elements. There are a variety of hinge types available depending on the size, weight, and material of the door or window frame. For residential purposes, self-closing hinges provide convenience when entering and exiting your home. Edge stock a variety of [Versa hinges] to fit almost any size door.

Hinge restrictors are also used to secure glazing systems, limiting the amount of movement in a certain direction. These components can be configured with manual or automatic locking mechanisms to provide further security and protection from forced entry. For commercial applications such as hospitals, fire safety restrictors can be used to ensure that doors close promptly when activated by smoke alarms or other emergency signals.

By considering all the necessary factors related to hinges and hinge restrictors when purchasing doors and windows, you can ensure that your glazing system is reliable and secure.

Other types of door & window hardware

The window and door hardware that may be more familiar to your clients is that of handles, knockers, letter plates and spyholes, rather than the more intricate details above that you will more than likely already be well versed in.

These elements provide finishing touches to your clients’ homes or commercial premises. Spy holes are popular for providing that additional feeling of ‘safety’ for your clients, and as the name implies, enables homeowners to spy (using one eye) on their visitor through a tiny hole. We stock a variety of spyhole viewers available in white, chrome, black and brass along with both 10mm and 20mm spyhole extensions.

Depending on the door your client chooses, it may or may not come with knockers, and although some may argue knockers are slightly outdated (in an era of ring and video doorbells!), for many they offer the aesthetic finish that many modern doorbells do not. With this in mind, we stock a collection of classic Victorian style, Face Fix knockers which come with matching bolts and washers in black, chrome gold and white finishes.

We also stock a range of Espag window handles all of which are lockable, each available with 5 magnetic spindles which remove the need to cut spindles down on site.

In addition to window and door hardware, we stock a variety of Composite and PVC Doors which include locking systems and that may be available on a bespoke basis. We are also proud to partner with Origin, who provide many of our door and window hardware ranges. For bespoke enquiries, please do email us on [email protected] or if you aren’t able to find what you’re looking for, please do visit our website.

Having secure locking, fastening and functional doors and windows is integral to any building whether it is residential or commercial. There are many components that help ensure these are secure, as we’ve covered in this blog.  With a mixture of door and window hardware, you will be able to help guide your clients to purchase products for their homes to ensure they sleep soundly at night, safe in the knowledge that their property is secure.

Edge Building Products have three trade counters across the South East; Horsham, Chichester and Croydon. You can sign up for a trade account via our website at www.edgebp.co.uk. Our team are also available should you have any queries about any of the door or window hardware that features in this blog. We are contactable on 0345 021 3333 or via email at [email protected]

Glazed walls (or curtain walls) are typically floor-to-ceiling walls that are made up of glass panels that allow natural light to enter a building while also providing thermal insulation.

In the more modern projects we supply, they have become increasingly popular. This is hardly surprising as glazed walls have many benefits… and we think they look exceptional too!

Let the light in!

A huge feature of glazed walls is their ability to provide natural light. Natural light is essential to improve mood, increase productivity and promote a healthier environment. With glazed walls, natural light can penetrate deep into the interior of the building, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. This not only saves energy but also enhances the ambience of the space, making it more inviting and comfortable.

As well as providing natural light, glazed walls can also enhance both the interior and exterior aesthetics of a building. The use of glass can create a modern and sleek appearance and the transparency of the material allows for unobstructed views of the surroundings, which can be particularly appealing in homes and offices situated in picturesque locations. Glazed walls also provide a sense of openness, creating a feeling of spaciousness and airiness that can make a room feel more inviting.

Energy-efficient approach

Glazed walls also offer energy efficiency benefits that can help to reduce the carbon footprint of a building. The glass used in glazed walls can be coated with a special material that reflects heat, which helps to keep the interior of the building cooler during the summer months. During the winter months, the same material helps to retain heat, making the building more energy efficient. This can lead to reduced energy consumption, lower energy bills, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Choosing the right options for your project

When choosing the best option for a project, there are several factors to consider. The first is the type of glass used. There are various types of glass available, including clear, tinted, and coated.

Clear glass allows for maximum visibility and natural light, but it may not be ideal for buildings situated in areas with high levels of sunlight as it can result in glare and heat build-up. Tinted glass can be a good option as it reduces glare and heat, but it may also alter or reduce visibility. Coated glass is an excellent choice for improving energy efficiency as it reflects heat, but it may also be more expensive than other options.

The second factor to consider is the framing system used. You’ll need to make sure that the system is durable, low maintenance, and can be customised to fit the design of the building. We supply a wide range of PVC aluminium frame systems that are tailored to your project’s specific needs – whether it’s a property near the sea, largely exposed to the elements or your client’s preferences.

The third factor to consider is the size and location of the glazed walls. Glazed walls that are too large can result in excessive heat gain, while glazed walls that are too small may not provide adequate natural light. It is important to consider the orientation of the building and the amount of sunlight it receives throughout the day to determine the best location for glazed walls.

Are glazed walls right for your project  ?

So, we can safely say that glazed walls offer a range of benefits in modern architecture. They provide natural light, enhance aesthetics, and improve energy efficiency. When choosing the best option for a project, it is important to consider the type of glass used, the framing system, and the size and location of the glazed walls. With careful consideration and planning, glazed walls can add value and beauty to any building.

This month we’re delighted to award CY Homes Ltd for their installation of our products into this beautiful Surrey development.

The project consists of three detached new build homes, located on the suburban outskirts of Haslemere, just a few minutes from the A3.  Each home has been designed with individuality and luxury in mind. All properties have contemporary open-plan living spaces and high spec bedrooms and bathrooms. For the project, Edge supplied casement windows, residential doors, French doors, white fascia and soffits, white uPVC guttering and composite doors in anthracite grey.

White PVC guttering, fascia and soffits compliment the white casement windows with astragal bars, to secure a timeless, classy look that characterises these properties. The dark grey front door adds a modern edge, with contemporary long steel bar handles.

Completed in early 2023, the project took ten months to complete. CY homes said their overall service from Edge was very good, and the products were easy to install.

Congratulations to CY Homes Ltd for giving their project the edge. A great project and well-deserved reward. We look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

What are BS and RAL?

If you’re in the building, architectural, design or interiors sectors, you will almost certainly have heard of RAL and British Standards (BS) colour matching systems. Though just how many of those reading this blog know what RAL stands for, and what are the finer details of these systems and their uses?

RAL stands for “Reichs Ausschuss für Lieferbedingungen” (in English, the German Commission for Delivery Conditions!) RAL is a colour-matching system used to identify standard colours for paints, coatings, and plastics. It was developed in 1927 and has become an internationally recognised standard used by many nations across the world.

British Standard (BS) colours are a collection of colours that have been derived from sets of regulations and standards laid down for the use of industrial colour specifications within the UK. The BS 4800:2011 colour chart was first introduced in 1936 and is currently used as a reference guide for specifying surface finishes on building projects.

What are the benefits of using BS and RAL charts?

By having precise definitions for each shade listed within these two systems, designers can rest assured knowing that their project will always turn out just as they envisioned it – without any unpleasant colour surprises later down the line! These are also helpful tools for traders to utilise and follow, ensuring that the vision and instructions of designers and/or clients are easily followed and achieved, without risky and unnecessary guess work.

Where are BS and RAL used?

RAL and BS colours serve an important role in ensuring consistency within projects across a variety of industries around the globe. In terms of the construction sector, RAL and BS colours are used to ensure colour consistency throughout a build project, enabling architects and designers to create designs with confidence. By referencing these standardised colour charts, professionals can be sure that they have accounted for all necessary shades or textures before beginning a job.

What are the most popular colours?

Over the last few years there has been a big increase in the popularity of doors and windows in grey, and black. On-trend statement colours for front doors, for example, are Uplifting Greens e.g RAL 6019 Pastel Green, Warm Tranquil Blues such as RAL 5009 Azure Blue, or Serene Soft Pinks such as RAL 3015 Light Pink.

Many people are also opting for contemporary charcoal (e.g RAL 7021-P Black Grey) or sage green (e.g RAL 6011-P Reseda Green) windows instead of the traditional white PVC style or woodgrain effect aesthetic.

Edge Building Products provide a range of windows and doors in popular colours.

Our range of aluminium bi-folding and sliding doors are available in a variety of configurations and colours utilising the RAL chart.

Cladding has also seen a rise in popularity in recent years, with many opting to add a pop of a colour to their home with external composite cladding. External cladding has become the go-to for transforming the exterior of a home at an affordable cost with little ongoing maintenance. Cladding can turn a dated or tired looking frontage into a contemporary, smart and stylish home with a quick facelift.

Our roof glazing systems provide a great way to bring natural light into your home or workspace, providing a bright and welcoming environment that can enhance your quality of life and increase productivity. But with so many options available, it can be challenging to decide which type of roof glazing to install. In this article, we’ll explore why a lantern rooflight may be the best choice for your project.

First, let’s take a look at the different types of roof glazing available. There are Flat Glass Rooflights, or skylights, which are installed flush with the roof and provide a flat, unobstructed view of the sky. Then there are roof windows, or Velux windows which are hinged at the top and open outwards to provide ventilation as well as light. Finally, there are lantern rooflights, which are a type of pitched roof glazing that sits on top of a raised kerb, creating a stunning focal point and bringing in lots of light.

So why choose a lantern rooflight over the other options? Here are some of the key benefits we’d like to tell you about:

One of the most significant advantages of a lantern rooflight is the amount of natural light it brings into a space. Because of their height and pitch, lantern rooflights let in more light than skylights or roof windows. This can make a significant difference to the feel of a room, making it brighter and more welcoming. It can also help to reduce your reliance on artificial lighting, which can save you money on your energy bills.

Better views

Another advantage of a lantern rooflight is that it provides a better view of the sky and surrounding area than skylights or roof windows. Because the glass is pitched, you get a wider and more expansive view, which can be especially stunning if you have a scenic location. This can also be beneficial if you want to create a sense of openness and space in a room.

Improved ventilation

While normal lantern rooflights don’t provide ventilation themselves, they can be manufactured to include opening pane and create a fully ventilated space. This can be particularly useful in kitchens, bathrooms or other areas where moisture can be a problem. By choosing lantern rooflights with openers, you can create a well-ventilated space that is also filled with natural light.

Enhanced aesthetics

Lantern rooflights are also an excellent choice if you’re looking to create a stunning visual impact in your home or workspace. They can be customised to fit the exact size and shape of your roof, and they create a dramatic, eye-catching focal point that can transform the look of a room. They are especially popular in modern, open-plan spaces where they can be used to create a sense of height and space.

Longevity and durability

Finally, lantern rooflights are a durable and long-lasting choice for roof glazing. They are typically made from high-quality materials like aluminium or timber, which are designed to withstand the elements and last for many years. They also require very little maintenance, which makes them a cost-effective choice in the long run.

So, while there are many different types of roof glazing available, a lantern rooflight can offer a unique combination of natural light, stunning aesthetics, and durability. If you’re looking to enhance your home or workspace with roof glazing, a lantern rooflight is definitely worth considering. With its ability to flood your space with natural light, improve your views, and create a sense of openness, it can transform the way you experience your surroundings.
