Our bifold and sliding doors are a popular choice for homeowners who want to maximize space and create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas. However, like any home improvement project, the installation of these doors can come with its fair share of potential problems, and our customers often ask us – how can these problems be avoided so we don’t waste time and money on site?
So, this blog covers some of the most common problems that can occur when installing bifold and sliding doors, and offers you some solutions!
Improper Measurements
One of the most common problems with installing bifold and sliding doors is inaccurate measurements. The doors must fit perfectly in the opening, and even a small mistake can lead to significant issues. If the doors are too big, they will not fit in the space, and if they are too small, there will be gaps that can cause air and water leaks.
Solution: The key to avoiding measurement issues is to get a professional installer on board take accurate measurements. It is essential to measure the opening width and height, as well as the depth and width of the walls surrounding the opening. This information will help the installer determine the right size and type of door for the space.
Uneven Flooring
Another issue that can arise when installing bifold doors and sliding doors is uneven flooring. If the floor is not level, it can cause the doors to sit at an angle, making them difficult to open and close.
Solution: If the flooring is uneven, you will obviously need to level it before installing the doors. This can be done using a self-levelling compound, which will create a smooth, even surface for the doors to sit on.
Poorly Installed Track Systems
Bifolds and sliding doors rely on track systems to function properly. If the tracks aren’t properly installed, the doors can be difficult to open and close, and they may not slide smoothly.
Solution: To avoid problems with the track system, it is essential to use high-quality tracks and hardware. A professional installer will have the expertise to install the track system correctly, ensuring that the doors operate smoothly.
Warping and Misalignment
Bifold and sliding doors are made of multiple panels that can be heavy, especially if they are made of wood. Over time, the weight of the doors can cause warping or misalignment, leading to problems with opening and closing.
Solution: To avoid warping and misalignment, it is important to choose high-quality doors made of materials that are resistant to warping. For example, our aluminium range is an excellent choice for bifold and sliding doors, as they are highly resistant. Also, occasional maintenance and adjustment of the doors can help prevent warping and misalignment over time.
Insufficient sealing
Bifold and sliding doors are often used as exterior doors, which means they must provide adequate insulation to keep out drafts and moisture. Insufficient sealing or gasket can lead to air and water leaks, which can cause significant problems, such as mould and mildew growth and higher energy bills.
Solution: To avoid weather sealing issues, it is important to choose doors that come with high-quality gasket pre-installed and use weather-proof silicones. Additionally, regular maintenance and replacement of weather-stripping can help ensure that the doors provide adequate insulation over time.
In conclusion, bifolds and sliders are a popular choice for homeowners, but they can come with potential problems. Improper measurements, uneven flooring, poorly installed track systems, warping and misalignment, and insufficient weather-stripping and sealing are all issues that can arise when installing these doors. The key to avoiding these problems is really to work with a professional installer who has the expertise and certification to ensure that the doors are installed correctly. Additionally, choosing high-quality doors made of durable materials and keeping them in good condition can help ensure that they function properly over time. By taking these steps, you can enjoy the many benefits of bifolding and sliding doors in your project without worrying about the doors jamming shut or leaking.

Why is guttering so essential for any property?
Guttering is an essential part of the roofing system for all properties and can help protect the entire property from a range of problems. A very small percentage of properties in the UK are without guttering and they are the exception, not the rule. Having a good quality drainage system in place is important for any homeowner looking for peace of mind when it comes to keeping their property safe.
Guttering plays a key role in helping to keep rainwater away from the property, particularly in the UK, where discussing if it’s going to rain or not is a national obsession! Without proper drainage solutions, rainwater could be left to run off the roof into areas around the house, possibly eroding the foundations and causing water damage to walls or even leading to flooding inside the home. Water damage to any property is costly and difficult to repair and can, if not treated quickly, lead to major building or repair work.
Guttering works because it directs the water away from the property and minimises the chances of this damage. In short, guttering catches rainwater that is running off the property’s roof surfaces and then safely diverts it away from the property via drains or other drainage systems.
Additionally, rainwater is often captured and stored by householders for gardening. Guttering redirects water into water butts and storage tanks. Furthermore, water can be channelled into larger storage tanks for use in the home, although special care is needed to ensure it is safe for human consumption.
What are the different types of metal guttering?
With a range of different types and materials of guttering available, each with its own set of benefits, it can be difficult to decide which type of guttering is right for your clients’ property. In this blog we will look at the benefits of metal guttering to help you guide homeowners in their decision.
When choosing which type of metal guttering is best for the property, there are several options available.
Steel gutters are one of the most widely used options as they provide excellent corrosion resistance, meaning they will last longer than many other types of material even when exposed to prolonged amounts of moisture or humidity.
Aluminium gutters are also a popular choice due to their light weight and ease of installation, while remaining strong enough to handle heavier rains and storms without becoming damaged or misshapen over time.
Cast iron gutters are also an option but may require more maintenance than the other two types of metal due to their susceptibility to rust if not sealed properly against moisture exposure.
What are the benefits of metal guttering?
One of the main advantages of using metal guttering is its strength and durability. This type of guttering can withstand extreme weather conditions including high winds, heavy rain and snowfall without being damaged or compromised. This makes it a great choice for properties that are exposed to harsher environments than others, as metal guttering won’t succumb to damage like plastic or wood could.
Another major benefit of using metal guttering is that it requires minimal maintenance compared to other materials. Unlike plastic or wooden alternatives which may need regular cleaning and repair, metal can be left alone for years without needing much attention at all. This makes this type of guttering an ideal option for homeowners who want a low-maintenance solution that still provides effective drainage solutions.
Aluminium guttering can also be considered as largely beneficial for the environment as it is non-toxic and less at risk to chipping and breaking than uPVC pipes. It is also considered a safer option as it does not alter the acidity of rainwater. Aluminium is considered by some to be the most eco-friendly alternative for guttering material and is often a favoured product for roofers. It is a largely durable product, surviving adverse weather conditions and lasting for years without repairs or maintenance.
Steel guttering also has multiple benefits, including its ability to resist thermal effects. Galvanised steel is made by coating regular steel with a layer of zinc oxide to protect it from corrosion and rust. The process of galvanizing the steel gives it superior protection against extreme temperatures, moisture, oxidation, corrosion, fire, and other factors that can damage or destroy other metals over time. It doesn’t experience expansion or contracting like other metals and steel guttering therefore has excellent lifetime value, and, unlike uPVC guttering, it is recyclable.
If properly maintained, metal guttering can last a very long time. Not only is it strong and less at risk to sagging, it is also a fantastic option for maintaining Victorian and character buildings. However, it’s important to note that metal guttering is, of course, a heavier option, which can make transportation and installation harder.
In summary, metal guttering is a fantastic solution to keep buildings protected from water damage and to reduce the levels of maintenance required compared to other cheaper materials such as uPVC. Though metal guttering can be more of a financial commitment, and is heavier, it’s durability and strength make it a better choice. If sealed properly and cleaned regularly, metal gutters are likely to be longer lasting, and for the environment-conscious homeowner, the non-toxic materials will have less environmental damage.

The Britmet Liteslate tile is a high-performance, synthetic, lightweight roofing solution will bring many benefits to your project. In this blog, we’re giving you the top 7 reasons why you should install the Liteslate tiles.
1 – Convenient– Britmet’s Liteslate tile is lightweight, making it super easy to store and carry around on site. The tiles are compression moulded, and even have pitch finder marks impressed into the tiles showing you where to fix the slate. This makes installation a simple task for DIY installers and qualified roofers! Liteslate is a completely dry-fix system, and on top of all that – you only need a fine-tooth saw or sharp blade to cut it with!
2 – Beautifully authentic appearance – real Welsh slate was used in the design process of the Liteslate tiles, and you can tell – it is so realistic! The overall finish and riven front edge of each tile gives the perfect impression of an authentic slate. There is a wide range of colours to choose from too, ensuring you have the right style for your project, and many accessories and flashings available – all designed to give the same effect as the traditional slate tile.
3 – Liteslate is versatile. It can achieve a minimum pitch of 14° and a max pitch of 90° – making it suitable for a very wide range of applications. Lean to’s, garages, holiday homes, vertical cladding solutions, and stables are just some of the installation suggestions we have up our sleeve – these tiles can literally be installed anywhere!
4 – Care for Quality – The Liteslate tiles are British manufactured using a whopping 90% recycled materials (an expert blend of polypropylene and limestone). In addition to this, they have 40-year weather penetration guarantee, plus full technical support available for any concerns or queries regarding the specification or installation of the tiles.
5 – Britmet tiles are Safe & Strong – with a BS476-3 fire rating. Liteslate tiles don’t break, warp or crack, even when exposed to extreme weather conditions over a long period of time. This gives you the ultimate peace of mind when you install the tiles, as you know they won’t let you down.
6 – Cost Effective. Yes. With 18-22 slates per square metre, Liteslate tiles are designed to save you time and space, which ultimately saves you money. Each tile weighs 1/7th the weight of traditional roofing tiles – making them cheaper to transport and meaning you could load more onto a pallet at once. Furthermore, you’ll save money by not needing to have annual checks and repairs, as we’ve mentioned before – the tiles are designed to be very robust.
7 – Liteslate tiles are Virtually Maintenance Free. Due to the expertly-blended materials that make up these tiles, they are very resistant to damage, mould, pests and many other factors that could impair their appearance. This means there will be no need for anyone to risk life and limb and climb up onto the roof to clean it or repair any faults. The tiles look after themselves.
So, there you have it, the beautiful looking, modern day version of a traditional slate tile – with heaps of advantages for your project. Shiplap cladding has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in the home renovation and design industry. Like many forms of composite cladding, it has some real benefits over traditional cladding – from versatility through to colour choice and being easy to maintain.
Regardless of what you need to use it for, this type of cladding is a simple and effective way to add a touch of rustic charm to any space, and it can be used in a variety of settings, both inside and outside of the home.
Saving you hassle on projects
One of the reasons shiplap cladding is so popular is that it is relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Unlike other types of cladding, such as brick or stone, shiplap can be purchased pre-cut and pre-finished, making it a quick and easy option for our customers. Additionally, it can be installed using basic tools, such as a saw and hammer, making it accessible to those with perhaps a more limited construction experience.
The natural wood grain effect is perfect for adding a sense of warmth and texture to a room or building and offers a range of practical benefits, including insulation and durability, as well as the ability to create a variety of different styles and designs.
Used in a variety of ways
Versatility is another great benefit of shiplap cladding. It can easily be used on internal walls or used create an inviting outdoor space. In a porch or patio or it can even be used to create an accent wall, a feature wall, or a complete wall covering to create a space that is tailored to their individual tastes and preferences. Additionally, our shiplap cladding ranges don’t need to be painted or stained, saving you a job!
Shiplap cladding is also a great economical option – it adds another layer of insulation to a space, which can help to reduce energy costs, and it is a durable and long-lasting option to save on maintenance and replacements
While often chosen for its wood grain effect, shiplap cladding can also be used to create modern and contemporary spaces when paired with sleek and minimalistic design elements. This ability to blend seamlessly with different styles is another reason why shiplap cladding is so popular.
With all these benefits, it’s no wonder that shiplap cladding is so popular among homeowners and designers alike.

Installing PVC windows and doors in the home has numerous benefits, both short-term and long-term. Not only are these frames aesthetically pleasing and require minimal maintenance, but they are also highly durable and offer superior insulation performance compared to other materials such as hardwood, softwood and aluminium.
In this blog we will look at the benefits of PVC windows and doors in more detail to ensure we are arming you with all the information you need to help your clients decide on whether PCV is right for them and their property.
What is PVC?
Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC for short, is a material used in the construction of window and door frames and has become increasingly popular over the last couple of decades due to their long-lasting nature, energy efficiency, cost effectiveness and easy installation.
PVC is a strong plastic composite that’s resistant to weathering, rot, and corrosion, making them an ideal choice for homes in areas that are subject to low temperatures.
What are the practical benefits of using PVC windows and doors?
PVC has higher insulation properties than other window materials such as wood or aluminium, which allows for better protection against heat loss in cooler climates. Technically advanced PVC windows can offer high A+14 energy efficiency ratings, meaning heat remains inside the property, therefore reducing energy bills and the carbon footprint of the homeowner.
When it comes to soundproofing, PVC materials have better noise reduction capabilities than other materials – making them perfect for those living in noisy neighbourhoods. This is particularly important if the property is on a main road and is subject to persistent traffic noise.
PVC windows have the benefit of being available in two different glazing options – double glazing, which contributes even further to improved thermal performance by trapping air between two panes of glass, and triple-glazing, which offers an additional pane of glass (and therefore two air pockets for ultra-insulation!)
In terms of safety and security, PVC windows and doors are available with multiple lock systems that make it extremely difficult for intruders to enter the home. Furthermore, thanks to the strength and rigidity of the frames, they serve as an additional barrier against break-ins and provide extra peace of mind to homeowners.
Locks for PVC windows are available in a variety of types and colours, including white, black, chrome, gold and silver. There are also a range of hinge options: a standard hinge, and a series of fire escape (egress) hinges, which provide an increased clear opening area to escape through in the event of an emergency.
Ventilation is also a key benefit of PVC windows and doors, and allows additional airflow into the property without the need to open the window or door.
What about the aesthetics of PVC windows and doors?
PVC windows and doors are available in a variety of colours meaning homeowners can achieve the desired look for their home’s external appearance while still ensuring that they will benefit from all of the practical advantages of using PVC. With PVC, frames don’t require painting, staining, or sealing like timber does, nor will they fade in the same way as wood. There has been an increase in popularity for grey frames over recent years, and whichever colour homeowners choose, PVC windows and doors boast a sleek modern appearance that greatly enhances the aesthetics of any living space, whilst also giving the home extra curb appeal.
One of the biggest aesthetical benefits of PVC windows and doors is the range of styles they are available in. PVC offers a wealth of choice and can ensure the period and style of the house is complemented. Styles include tilt & turn, vertical sliding windows, sliding sash, flush sash, and casement windows. This range demonstrates their true versatility too.
Does UPVC really last longer than other window and door materials?
Yes, they really do!
PVC is strong and durable, and easy to install. Not only this, UPVC frames are renowned for being low maintenance and easy to clean, requiring minimal effort from the homeowner. Because PVC is a durable and robust material, it can withstand most outdoor elements. PVC glazing systems can be maintained simply and easily with a cloth or soft brush and warm water, alongside some mild detergent for stubborn marks and stains.
Regular cleaning of the windows and doors and checking them for any damage is also advisable; and spotting any issues and addressing them immediately with the appropriate repairs will help prolong their lifespan. Signs that UPVC windows need replacing usually include the windows becoming draughtier, excessive condensation gathering on the inside of the window, and any visible damage to the glass panes.
However, it’s important to note that well maintained UPVC windows and doors can last around 20 years and beyond, which far exceeds that of the timber or aluminium alternatives.
Choosing good quality PVC windows and doors
Choosing good glazing systems from a reputable supplier and ensuring they are fitted by a qualified tradesperson will of course mean windows and doors last for as long as possible.
Edge Building Products are leaders in building and glazing products and offer the broadest range of PVCu windows and doors on the market. Not only do we deliver our glazing systems directly to your site, but we are also available to answer any questions you or your clients may have.

Double glazing versus Triple glazing windows and doors – The Facts.
When considering replacing old single-paned windows and doors with new double or triple glazed units, homeowners often face a dilemma about which glazing type to choose. Along with frame type, gas fills and spacers, energy use and warranties, there is a lot to consider.
How should you guide your clients to choose the right glazing system, and how do the benefits of each one stack up?
In this blog, we will specifically look at the facts around both double and triple-glazing, so that homeowners are able to make an informed decision on the glazing system that is right for them.
Single glazing
Although single-glazed windows may still be found in old properties and those in need of renovation, single glazing is no longer permitted under new-build construction laws. The act, brought in during 2002 states that new windows must conform to standard energy efficiency ratings. Windows and doors are given a ‘U-factor’, also called a ‘U-value’, which is ‘the rate at which a window, door or skylight transmits non-solar heat flow’.*
Single glazing scores extremely poorly in this area. The lower the U-factor rating, the more energy-efficient the glazing system is.
How is double or triple glazing more energy efficient?
Double-glazed and tripe-glazed windows have lower U-factor ratings due to the two or three panes of glass that are separated by an air gap or gas called ‘argon’. This gap, which is roughly 16mm in thickness, is completely sealed and helps to considerably reduce heat loss in a room, whilst also increasing sound insulation and therefore blocking out external noise.
Energy efficient glazing also reduces the build-up of condensation which can have long-term effects on the home and health of its occupants. With both double and triple-glazed windows, condensation is reduced as it cannot form between the panes of glass due to a component called ‘desiccant’ being used, which absorbs excess moisture.
Glazing systems are manufactured in different sizes, styles, materials and with various types of frames. Types of double-glazed and tripe-glazed windows include tilt & turn, which are often chosen for upper floor windows due to their security benefits, vertical sliding windows, sliding sash, flush sash and casement windows.
There is also the material of the frame for the homeowner to consider. uPVC is a popular choice due to its easy maintenance and the variety of colours available, but other options include hardwood and softwood, aluminium, and composite.
What are the major differences between double and triple glazing?
Unsurprisingly the major difference between double and triple-glazed windows is that the latter contains three individual panes of glass instead of two. Naturally, because there are 3 panes of glass and 2 ‘pockets’ of air between them, rather than 1, triple glazing offers additional heat insulation benefits over double-glazing and allows more efficient trapping of heat inside the property.
This results in reduced energy costs in addition to improved comfort, as temperatures will remain consistent across all rooms regardless of external weather conditions. This is an important consideration for homeowners with the current energy cost crisis.
Given the extra layer of insulation provided by triple glazing, there will be greater noise reduction compared to double glazing due to sound waves being trapped within the three panes instead of two.
Whilst both double and triple-glazed windows have considerably greater insulation benefits than single glazing, it does also mean that the heat of the sun is kept out, and therefore a house will not see the benefit of the natural warmth of the sun. In a country like the UK, which doesn’t typically see extremely hot weather conditions, this is less of an issue.
It’s also important to note that triple-glazed windows add an increase in security. Naturally, the extra pane of glass increases strength and will be much tougher to break through.
Triple-glazed windows do tend to be more costly than their double-glazed counterparts due to increased material costs, and so it’s important to weigh up the cost saving benefits of added insulation versus the financial outlay of the windows.
This increase in material means that environmental impact is also a consideration for both double and triple-glazed windows. Whilst undoubtedly, triple-glazing will be more energy efficient and reduce the homeowners carbon footprint, it will use more material in the manufacturing process, and it therefore comes with its own environmental cost.
In summary, it’s important for homeowners to carefully consider all these elements when choosing between double and triple-glazing. The decision will depend largely on individual preferences and circumstances, given that both offer distinct advantages.

Common questions about uPVC Windows and Doors
We supply a vast range of uPVC Windows and Doors at Edge, and we get a lot of questions about their thermal efficiency, appearance, and many other factors.
We’ve taken the most frequently asked questions to make sure you have the answers you need!
Should I install UPVC Windows and Doors?
uPVC windows can literally be installed in any type of building. They are incredibly easy to keep clean and are also a very cost–effective, energy-saving solution. So, yes – you should install them!
What is double-glazed glass?
Double glazing is basically two panes of glass sealed together, with a gas-filled cavity between them. Standard units are about 28mm thick, with the actual glass panes at 4mm thick.
Are double-glazed windows good for the environment?
Yes, double-glazed windows are good at preventing heat loss, which both energy-saving and cost-effective! Double-glazed windows are said to be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 680kg per year!
How long does it take to install double-glazed windows?
Installing uPVC double-glazed windows doesn’t take long if you know what you’re doing. We recommend getting a professional window fitter in if you don’t have the experience yourself. Take a look at our PVC installation guide for more details.
Are double-glazed windows vacuum sealed?
No, the cavity between the two window panes is filled with a noble gas, mostly Argon. This prevents the heat from indoors escaping so rapidly, improving thermal efficiency.
What is double-glazing beading?
Beading is the part of the window frame which holds the glass. It’s usually a strip which snaps into the window frame over the glass.
What is the U value of a double-glazed unit?
U values differ depending on the specification of the unit. However, a standard 28mm double-glazed unit is around 1.2w/m²K.
What are the advantages of uPVC windows and doors?
- Low maintenance – easily cleaned or touched up.
- Safe and secure – high-quality locking systems are available to protect your property.
- Soundproof – cancelling out external noise and providing acoustic insulation.
- Weatherproof – protecting property interiors from rain, hail, and other severe weather.
- Great value for money – PVC is cheaper than aluminium or wooden windows.
- Versatile – almost limitless opportunities in styling and performance, suited to any property!
What are the common patterns and types of uPVC windows?
Some of the trends in uPVC windows over the last few years are:
- Grey and black shades
- Matt or woodgrain finishes (for modern or traditional properties).
- Flush casement sashes, these are very popular due to their seamless, classic design – they look perfect in almost every style, whether traditional or modern.
- Sliding sash windows are also very popular in more traditional style projects, these are also great for air flow in rooms.
Why are my double-glazed windows covered in condensation?
If your glass units are misty or have condensation within the panes, this means the seal has broken and the unit is ‘blown’.
Can blown double-glazed glass units be repaired?
We recommend that you replace any blown units (glass units that have mist or condensation inside the pane) as this means the unit seal is broken – there is no effective way to fix this issue.
Are uPVC windows and doors easy to break into?
PVC doors are fitted with high-quality locking mechanisms, as standard – making them a secure option to install in your home. Take a look at our specification guide for more details on the locking systems.
What makes uPVC doors so popular?
One of the reasons why uPVC doors are so popular is because they are very low maintenance. There are a lot of styles you can achieve with uPVC windows too, which is another reason why they are often preferred – Sash windows, French casements, flush sash and standard casements are just some of the styles that look perfect in PVC profile.
Plastic windows provide durable weatherproof protection that can be relied upon for many years after installation and are cheaper than timber or aluminium windows too.

Window Fitting is a tough job, and getting it wrong is a complete nightmare. You want to be able to fit the windows quickly and efficiently in your project and have peace of mind that they are watertight, secure and look good. In this blog, we’ve selected 9 products that we think will help you deliver the perfect window installation, every time.
1 – Gasket Shears / Trim Snips
These are designed easily cut through trims and window beads and have a flat base plate with mitre angle markings for accurate mitring of trims. The blade and base are both replaceable and the handle is made with a soft-grip rubber. Our trim snips come with safety locks for protection on-site.
2 – Thor Hammer
The Thor hammer has a chrome-plated zinc head with two screw-in nylon faces which can be replaced when worn down. It’s used as a non-damaging multi-purpose striking tool in most assembly applications including engineering, furniture, shop-fitting, partitioning, double glazing and injection moulding operations. You can purchase the nylon screw-in faces in a few different levels of firmness to suit your window installation requirements.
3 – Plastic glazing shovel
Our glazing shovel, or paddle, can be used to assist in packing out glass units and adjusting window frames. Its thin edge allows it to reach areas that are inaccessible for other tools, or hands. We recommend you use the glazing shovel for toe and heeling doors and windows to prevent dropping, lifting and positioning glazed units and scraping off excess silicone.
4 – Footprint Hacking Knife
The Footprint hacking knife is designed to aid in the removal of putty from window frames – making the tidying-up process a breeze.
- Manufactured from a single piece of high Carbon Alloy Steel
- Drop Hammer forged end to end for maximum strength and longevity.
- Hardened and tempered blade for a long-lasting edge
- The spine of the blade is strikable with a hammer

The Winbag is a must-have, allowing one person to complete the installation job quickly and easily, even on larger projects.
Features:
- Can be used in joints 2 – 50mm
- 135Kg load capacity per bag
– Won’t scratch or damage the project
– Easy to inflate and deflate
6 – Window Snapper Fixing Device Box 100 pcs
The Window Snapper is a fixing device that enables you to install a fully glazed window in 5 minutes, literally!
Key features:
- Fits between frame and masonry
- No drilling or plastering required
- No de-glazing on site
What is a ‘Snapper’?
A stainless spring-steel fixing with angled serrated tongues, which is fixed to the frame itself during manufacture
It can be used with UPVC, timber, or aluminium frames. Drilling through the frame into the masonry is not necessary, the window is installed fully glazed
The Snapper will bite into all building materials with a firm grip – yes! It’s a double spring so it will allow for expansion and contraction without lessening the grip on its surroundings.
The serrated tongues on the snapper allow the frame to be pushed into place, but act as an anchor once it’s secured – a bit like a cable tie, but stronger obviously!
7 – Cox Skeleton Gun 400ml
Our genuine Cox sealant skeleton gun suits up to 400ml silicone cartridges – its sturdy and its cheap, keep one in your tool box for when you get to the window-sealing stage.
8 – 28mm Broadfix Mixed Packers
We recommend you grab some of our bags of 28mm Mixed Glazing Packers (120 in a bag). The bag contains an assortment of 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm glazing packers. As you already know, packers are an important part to installing windows professionally and carry and spread the load of the glazed unit and provide drainage and ventilation.
9 – Expanding Foam Tape 33 x 25mm
An impregnated self-adhesive foam tape, which when compressed to 20% of its expanded thickness, provides a weather seal. When placed in position, the strip expands to fill the gap; creating the perfect seal. This tape expands to 33mm thick from approximately 6mm thick.

Our EDGEsky roof lantern is an increasingly popular structure of rooflight that is largely installed in flat roof extensions. Often referred to as sky lanterns or roof windows, our lanterns are frequently chosen due to their classic, sleek design – which adds a sense of sophistication to any project. Roof lanterns make a perfect statement in a space, whilst bringing in tonnes of natural light and making rooms feel bigger. In this blog, we’ll look at the specification, previous installations and testimonials of the EdgeSky Roof Lantern.
Specification
The EdgeSky Roof Lantern is of the highest quality and designed to fit simply to a pre-formed weathered upstand on the roof. With a fixed pitch of 25 degrees, we can manufacture them in any size up to 4000x 6000mm, in matt grey, matt black or gloss white (with other RAL colours available on special order). Roof lanterns are an excellent choice if there is a need for a much larger roof glazing system to bring in a maximum flow of daylight.
Although roof lanterns have aluminium glazing bars that provide support and create the look of a ‘lantern’, our roof bars are slim at only 57mm wide – some of the slimmest on the market – and this appeals to homeowners looking for a sleek finish with less obstruction to the sky. Because we aim to give builders (and ultimately homeowners) choice, we also offer the addition of extra bars to the lantern if a more traditional look is required. Our EDGEsky roof lantern provides a clean, contemporary finish and structural elegance throughout.

Rainwater and drainage solutions this Winter
As the weather becomes colder and the days are shorter, it’s important to ensure that rainwater and drainage outlets on properties are up to the task of dealing with the increased rainfall and the drop in temperature. November 2022 has been a particularly harsh month for rainfall, and this period of such heavy rain will have been tough on drainage systems.
But do homeowners understand what their options are in terms of preventing any damage that might be caused by harsh weather throughout the year?
In this blog, we will look at the impact of not preventing water damage to property, and some of the best options for rainwater and drainage solutions to minimise the chances of this damage.
The importance of rainwater and drainage solutions
One of the most important things that home-owners can do to protect their property from the UK’s unpredictable weather, is for them to make sure that they have the appropriate rainwater and drainage solutions in place. This includes ensuring that their gutters and downpipes are in good condition.
Gutters may not be a glamourous subject when it comes to homeownership, but they really do play an important role in the maintenance and upkeep of a building. Guttering that is not maintained, and instead becomes clogged with leaves, moss and debris from the roof, can cause severe issues.
When rain-water cascades off the roof and into a clogged gutter (or no gutter at all), it leaves no route for the water to travel and will then overflow rather than flowing into the downpipes and into the drainage system below. It will then pour down the walls and onto the ground. If water is allowed to pool around the foundation of the property, it can then seep into cracks and cause untold damage.
This damage may just be to the general aesthetics or the surroundings of the property – the patio, lawn or flowerbeds below. The fascias or the paintwork of the property may also be effected, or the added moisture could encourage moss and mould to grow on the exterior. In worse case scenarios, the rainwater could cause erosion around the house and effect the foundations of the property.
Water damage is one of the most serious threats to home foundations, and if left unchecked, it can cause major structural damage, and in extreme cases, it can lead to total collapse. Whilst this is rare, taking steps to prevent water damage by implementing proper drainage around the perimeter of the property, will minimise the chances of any damage at all, and will ensure the foundations of the building are protected.
Gutters and Downpipes
Installing robust gutters and downpipes around the roofline of all property will play a vital role in collecting water and channelling it elsewhere. It can be sent to a drain below or simply, and effectively, collected into a water butt for use in the summer months when there is less rainfall. Guttering isn’t essential around the entire house, but is imperative on the downslope of the property.
Regular cleaning of gutters and downpipes is the best way to prevent problems from occurring, but it is a relatively simple task that is often overlooked. Replacing damaged guttering is also essential. If left cracked and in disrepair, the water will seep through the cracks, down the walls and to the ground below.
At Edge Building Products, we sell a range of rainwater & drainage solutions including both domestic & industrial PVC guttering and more traditional steel, cast iron style, and aluminium guttering.
When it comes to durability, both metal guttering and PVC guttering can last for decades, with PVC gutters perhaps needing to be replaced a few years before aluminium guttering would. For houses that are more exposed to the elements, metal guttering may be more suitable as steel, iron and aluminium will be able to withstand extreme weather conditions such as high winds and heavy snowfall. On the other hand, PVC guttering is much simpler to install, and is considerably cheaper. Please do ask us for advice on which guttering might be more suitable for your clients’ needs.
In addition to providing the guttering and downpipes themselves, Edge sell rainwater accessories in a variety of sizes, including gutter balloons, which are installed over the pipe outlets in the gutter to prevent leaves from blocking the downpipes, and gutter guards which can simply clip together and fit in either round or square guttering. Our Gutter brushes (which are sometimes known as ‘hedgehogs’ due to their prickly appearance) are a cost-effective solution for guttering and can be simply laid into the gutter. The bristles stop any leaves building up and causing blockages and although the guttering will still need clearing and cleaning, blockages are less likely.
In addition to these solutions, Edge can help with the appropriate screws, brackets and rainwater adaptors, ensuring everything needed for a property’s drainage can be sourced from one centralised place.
Ensuring that homeowners are aware of rainwater and drainage options will mean their properties are up to the task of dealing with the increased rainwater this winter. Cold and wet weather can be tough on drainage systems, so it’s important that your clients are aware of the options for preventing any damage, rather than trying to deal with the effects thereafter.

Introduction to roof glazing systems
Several years ago, if we referred to ‘glazing systems’, it might have been assumed that we were talking about windows only, but with PVC increasingly being the material of choice for window frames, there has also been a growth in popularity of roof glazing systems. Roof glazing systems are structures typically composed of one or more panels, held together by a frame, and used on the roof of a building to allow natural light to flood into a room.
In addition to letting in light, the benefits of roof glazing systems include the obvious one – providing protection from the elements, but they also offer improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, and UV protection. They can also help to increase the value of a property.
There are a variety of products that fall under this category of ‘roof glazing systems’, including skylights, roof lanterns, conservatories and lean-tos. Each of these products has its own unique benefits and can be used in a variety of ways to achieve the desired results.
Rooflights (often referred to as ‘skylights’), for example, are used to provide an unobstructed view of the sky, while roof lanterns are a glass structure which are mostly installed on flat roofs. By very definition of the word, roof lanterns have a stylish ‘lantern’ effect due to the slim roof bars that make up the structure.
No matter what the homeowner’s specific needs may be, there is a roof glazing system that can help achieve their desired look.
At Edge Building Products we sell both flat glass rooflights and aluminium roof lanterns, two of the most popular types of roof glazing systems. In this blog, we will look at the benefits of both these structures so that you are able to guide your clients towards a solution that most suits them.
Flat Glass Roof Lights
A roof light is typically installed within the slope of a roof and allows rainwater to glide off. Our Edgesky Flat Glass Rooflight is a practical and simple, yet effective, addition to an extension or an existing room, and allows unobstructed natural light to flow into the room. Our rooflight is produced in Anthracite Grey, a contemporary colour which is often a popular choice with modern interiors, but its versatility means it really could be used in any period of house. We also offer other RAL colours for the rooflight structure, upon request and we can also manufacture these high quality rooflights to any size needed, including multi pane rooflights with glass rafters.
For homeowners who are looking to improve energy efficiency, rooflights have the added advantage of not only letting the sunlight in during the day, but also trapping heat in at night. This of course can really help with reducing energy costs and ultimately lowering the household’s carbon footprint.
At Edge Building Products we also offer the option of having an electric opener with our flat glass rooflight. This is a good option for larger rooflights that are installed in south facing rooms that become particularly warm in the summer.
Roof Lanterns
A roof lantern is an increasingly popular structure of skylight that is mostly installed in the flat ceilings of buildings. Roof lanterns are also referred to as sky-lanterns and are often chosen because of their ‘wow factor’…. they are not designed to be hidden and are often installed as a statement piece in a room, mostly in the centre. A roof lantern will also add room height and will often result in even the smallest and darkest of rooms feeling brighter and much more spacious.
Our EdgeSky Roof Lantern is of the highest quality and designed to fit simply to a pre-formed weathered upstand on the roof. With a fixed pitch of 25 degrees, we can manufacture them in any size up to 4000x 6000mm, in matt grey, matt black or gloss white (with other RAL colours available on special order). Roof lanterns are an excellent alternative to a skylight if there is a need for a much larger roof glazing system to bring in a maximum flow of daylight.
Although roof lanterns have aluminium glazing bars that provide support and therefore create the look of a ‘lantern’, our roof bars are slim at only 57mm wide – some of the slimmest on the market – and this appeals to homeowners looking for a sleek finish with less obstruction to the sky. Because we aim to give builders (and ultimately homeowners) choice, we also offer the addition of extra bars to the lantern if a more traditional look is required. Our EDGESky roof lantern provides a clean, contemporary finish and structural elegance throughout, and this is why it remains hugely popular.
Keeping your roof glazing systems clean
Whilst roof lanterns and skylights are a fantastic addition to any building, we are often asked if our products come with self-cleaning glass.
The answer is yes, they do. Self-cleaning glass is treated with a special coating that helps to repel water and dirt, and because roof glazing systems are often not easily accessible, it is an important feature when considering which lantern or skylight to choose.
The self-cleaning coating also helps to break down organic contaminants when exposed to sunlight, and as a result, the glass stays cleaner for longer and is much easier to then maintain than traditional glass. In summary, there are several benefits of self-cleaning glass, including helping to reduce the amount of time and effort required to clean the glass, keeping the glass looking cleaner and newer for longer, and of course saving money on cleaning costs in the long run.
Self-cleaning glass is an ideal solution for busy homeowners and businesses, and all our roof lanterns and skylights come with self-cleaning glass as standard.

Bi-fold doors are made up of at least two door panels which, when opened, fold back against themselves in a ‘concertina style.’ The panels are joined by heavy-duty hinges and run along a top and bottom track using a sturdy carriage mechanism.

Benefits of installing bi-fold doors
Pros of bi-fold doors
- Traffic door option available – this is a door that can be used on its own, without having to fold back the rest of the door leaves.
- Wide range of options and designs – a large range of standard colours, plus the option to have your bi-folds made to a special RAL colour!
- Can open inwards or outwards and fold towards left or right
- Aluminium frames are lightweight and sturdy – they’ll last a long time, without needing much maintenance at all
- Can be fully opened to connect indoors and outdoors – let the fresh air and natural light in!
- Increase home value (internal bi-fold doors and external bi-folds)
- Available with a low threshold – to aid wheelchair access, or simply to make it easier to step over the threshold
- Internal bi-fold doors are great for temporary partitioning – ideal for office meeting spaces.
- Work in a large or small opening – we can supply a bespoke size!
A couple of important considerations when looking to purchase Bi-folds is that they need space to stack inside or outside the home once folded. Also, having a high number of panes (door leaves) in bi-fold sliding doors can impede on the view of the outdoors – so its best to keep the amount of leaves to a minimum for the space you have to install the doors.

Configurations
There is a wide range of options when configuring the perfect bi-fold door. We’ll be able to design the door to ensure that there is space for the bi-fold leaves to slide stack when folded, and the correct amount of panes to maximise the view of outdoors, bringing in as much natural light as possible.
There is also the option to add a traffic door, for projects when you know you will not always want to fully open the door set. This means that only one pane will open, just like a standard door – and the rest of the panes will act as part of the wall, remaining closed and sealed.
Marine grade
If you live near the sea, or on the seafront – it is important to get your bi-fold doors marine graded, this will ensure that the salty sea air does not wear away at the metals and cause rusting and malfunctioning door hardware. Marine grading is also important for the energy performance and sealing of doors that are installed in properties close to the sea.

November Installation of the Month – ANS Global
We’re delighted to award ANS Global our November Installation of the Month. They installed 240m of square black guttering into their stunning living wall at the Microsoft Offices, in the Cambridge Science Park. This impressive biophilic feature brings an element of nature into Microsoft’s commercial office environment.
This natural wall is 11 metres high – 33 square metres in total – and required a scissor lift to install the wall modules, irrigation pipes and maintenance. ANS installed guttering behind their living walls to catch the water runoff, and they chose Edge specifically because our guttering is easy to install and ensures a good seal at the joins.
This project took the ANS team two weeks to install, and we are told that the project went very well – with the installation team playing a big role in ensuring the project ran smoothly from start to finish.
Incorporating biophilic design into workspaces is becoming more and more popular nowadays. Not only does greenery satisfy our innate desire to be surrounded by nature, but it also helps to absorb noise, removes carbon dioxide from the air, and helps improve happiness and overall productivity of the workforce.
In a recent blog ANS said: “In a modern building there is often a lack of colour, a lack of inspiration, and a lack of nature. But with plenty of unused wall space, there is huge opportunity to fill what is lacking in terms of natural connection”.
ANS were delighted with the service they received from us and said the Edge team were “lovely people, friendly and nice to deal with”. Thank you ANS!
So, big congratulations to ANS Global, we are always excited to supply innovative projects like this, and we look forward to seeing more of their work in the future.

If you are considering a front door upgrade or unsure about the right style and security solution for a new property, then we have the answer. When it comes to the very best in style and security, we recommend the composite door!
In this blog, we’ll show you why composite doors are the best choice to install in new builds, renovations or even to replace your current door if it has seen better days.
About Composite doors
Composite doors have risen in popularity in recent years and are a brilliant choice for anyone wanting to upgrade the external doors of their home.
These doors are designed to give properties greater security and thermal superiority. They feature a solid core made with 16 layers of laminated veneered timber called Kerto® and other high-endurance materials that are compressed under high-pressure conditions. In using sixteen layers of lamination, the grain runs in multiple directions and provides increased strength and rigidity. In traditional wood, the grain can often be the leading cause of warping or splitting.
Composite doors are thicker, stronger and easier to maintain over time than other materials – meaning your home or project is future-proofed and utilises the best materials for the job. Another big bonus is the ability to choose the colour or finish that suits the environment best, without the need for painting and maintenance. Each composite door comes with two robust coloured PVCu skins that give the flexibility to make any designer happy with the end result.
Composite doors come complete with a Sculptured frame (Chamfered is available on request) in a choice of 22 coloured foils as well as plain white or cream. There are also the options of a 57mm low PVCu threshold instead of the normal 77mm as well as a 24mm aluminium which can also have wheelchair ramps fitted.
Timber is naturally renewable, and the timber in our composite is sourced from sustainably managed forests and can be recycled at the end of its useful life and not destined for landfill.

- Available for bespoke design – create your own!
- Thermally advanced – meeting the project’s needs and latest regulations.

Keeping a roofline watertight is an important part of protecting any home or building. When completing any big project, the fascias and soffits shouldn’t be overlooked, as they form a crucial part of home’s structure. Here at Edge, we believe it is crucial to choose the right fascia material for your client’s needs. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of choosing either a PVC or timber fascia.
Why a quality roofline is important.
Not only do fascias and soffits give the roofline it’s finished appearance, but they also have a practical purpose too. These boards prevent rainwater and debris from entering the loft space and creating leaks inside the home. While fascias are not required to uphold the structure of the roof, they help to extend its lifespan by providing additional protection against harsh weather. Choosing the right fascias can therefore support the functionality of the rooftiles and guttering.

PVC vs Wood: Durability & Maintenance
Durability is one of the most important factors when sourcing materials for a project. Providing a long-lasting, high-quality finish for your customers is the perfect way to build up those 5-star reviews and become a trusted tradesperson in your local area.
Timber fascias have remained a popular choice as it is a naturally strong material. When well-maintained, timber fascias can last around 20-25 years. However, it is crucial that this maintenance is carried out. Untreated wood will only last around 10 years, and is highly suspectable to weathering, rot, and splintering. If your customer wants to ‘fit and forget’, then wooden fascias are not the best choice.
PVC is a strong and durable material, making it a great choice for roofline products. While PVC can sometimes initially cost more than timber boards, the PVC fascias do not require painting, staining or sealing. This means that there are no further costs associated with these boards, and they will last for approximately 20-30 years. All the homeowners will need to do is give the boards a clean yearly to keep them looking their best.
PVC vs Wood: Style and Customisation Options
Homeowners, whether commissioning a new build or undertaking a home renovation project, are always looking to create a stylish yet practical house. While images of fascias and soffits may not be at the top of their Pinterest boards, we know that the right finish can complete a home.
Wooden fascias and soffits offer a classic look to a home, especially one with more classic features. Period properties in particularly often benefit from the look of wooden fascias. Alternatively, they can blend seamlessly into cabins and other wooden structures. These timber boards can also be painted to suit the colour palette of the house.
However, with a PVC fascias customers can select the exact finish of wood they love and still enjoy all the benefits of a PVC product. From foiled boards to dyed plastics, there is a wealth of choice available to customers looking to renovate their home. Here at Edge, we offer fascias in 15 different colours and in 4 different finishes. Homeowners can enjoy the classic beauty of a Rosewood or Irish Oak fascia without needing to seal, paint, or check it for wood-rot. PVC fascias offer the best in both customisation and reliability.
Looking for a unique colour or finish? Call us on 0345 021 3333 and we’ll be happy to help you source the fascias you need.
PVC vs Wood: Sustainability & Environmental Impact
As a builder or contractor, it is important to make sure that the materials you are purchasing are sustainable or come from sustainable sources. Often, this means making sure that the product can be properly recycled or disposed of at the end of its life.
Distributers of wooden products should make the environmental accreditation of the wood clear and indicate whether it has come from a sustainable source. As wood is a naturally occurring, it is arguably a sustainable and environmentally friendly building material when cultivated in a responsible way. Damaged or rotting wood can also be disposed of in green waste to decay naturally.
Manufacturers of PVC should also make it clear what their environmental policy is. The great lifespan of PVC products, and the fact that no additional chemicals are required to maintain the boards, does increase its sustainability. PVC products should be responsibility recycled at the end of their use to ensure that no unnecessary waste is being sent to landfill.
Final Verdict…
Although timber fascias do play an important role in some construction projects, here at Edge we believe that PVC is best choice for most homeowners and commercial properties. This is because unlike wooden beams, PVC fascias are lightweight and easy to install. Plus, once they have been installed, they only require a wipe with soapy water to stay looking their best. PVC offers the best in terms of colour and style options, mimicking the look of classic wooden beams while offering a low maintenance finish.

Freefoam’s diverse cladding range is a popular choice for long-term stockist Edge Building Products and its customers. The company has seen a robust increase in sales of Freefoam’s products over the past four years.
Edge Building Products was established more than 25 years ago and sells a wide range of low-maintenance building products across its three branches. It added Freefoam’s cladding range to its offering in 2017, in response to customer demand for a greater range of colours in the cladding market.
Edge Building Products Managing Director Kieran Napthine rates Freefoam’s cladding range, colours and product innovation as “excellent”. He says: “We were attracted to Freefoam’s Fortex range because of its diverse colour options and the excellent range of trims that are included in the system. From our customer sales, we see the strongest demand for grey colours.
“The system is so easy to use and install. It is easy to cut, and handles much better than fibre cement products, which have a similar appearance.
Since Freefoam’s introduction, sales of the brand’s products have been growing for Edge Building Products. This is, in part, due to the expanding home improvement market, which has been going from strength to strength.
Edge Building Products mostly supplies Freefoam cladding products to builders, homeowners, for home improvement projects, and double-glazing companies. It has also supplied several new build properties, with excellent results.
Kieran says: “We have definitely seen an uptick in home improvements over the past year. We believe many people are investing funds they would normally allocate to holidays and hospitality to improve their homes.
“The ‘New England’ style is very popular with homeowners, particularly in the South, and Freefoam’s Fortex cladding range is a great fit for this style of property. It provides a cost-effective, low-maintenance option for anyone looking to make long-lasting, attractive changes to their property.”
