Window Fitting is a tough job, and getting it wrong is a complete nightmare. You want to be able to fit the windows quickly and efficiently in your project and have peace of mind that they are watertight, secure and look good. In this blog, we’ve selected 9 products that we think will help you deliver the perfect window installation, every time.

1 – Gasket Shears / Trim Snips

These are designed easily cut through trims and window beads and have a flat base plate with mitre angle markings for accurate mitring of trims. The blade and base are both replaceable and the handle is made with a soft-grip rubber. Our trim snips come with safety locks for protection on-site.

2 – Thor Hammer

The Thor hammer has a chrome-plated zinc head with two screw-in nylon faces which can be replaced when worn down. It’s used as a non-damaging multi-purpose striking tool in most assembly applications including engineering, furniture, shop-fitting, partitioning, double glazing and injection moulding operations. You can purchase the nylon screw-in faces in a few different levels of firmness to suit your window installation requirements.

3 – Plastic glazing shovel

Our glazing shovel, or paddle, can be used to assist in packing out glass units and adjusting window frames. Its thin edge allows it to reach areas that are inaccessible for other tools, or hands. We recommend you use the glazing shovel for toe and heeling doors and windows to prevent dropping, lifting and positioning glazed units and scraping off excess silicone.

4 – Footprint Hacking Knife

The Footprint hacking knife is designed to aid in the removal of putty from window frames – making the tidying-up process a breeze.

5 – Winbag Air Wedge Inflatable Fitting & Levelling Tool

The Winbag is a hand-operated air cushion that has been designed to assist window fitters in the installation or adjustment of windows and doors – and many other household items, actually!

The Winbag is a must-have, allowing one person to complete the installation job quickly and easily, even on larger projects.

Features:

6 – Window Snapper Fixing Device Box 100 pcs

The Window Snapper is a fixing device that enables you to install a fully glazed window in 5 minutes, literally!

Key features:

What is a ‘Snapper’?

A stainless spring-steel fixing with angled serrated tongues, which is fixed to the frame itself during manufacture

It can be used with UPVC, timber, or aluminium frames. Drilling through the frame into the masonry is not necessary, the window is installed fully glazed

The Snapper will bite into all building materials with a firm grip – yes! It’s a double spring so it will allow for expansion and contraction without lessening the grip on its surroundings.

The serrated tongues on the snapper allow the frame to be pushed into place, but act as an anchor once it’s secured – a bit like a cable tie, but stronger obviously!

7 – Cox Skeleton Gun 400ml

Our genuine Cox sealant skeleton gun suits up to 400ml silicone cartridges – its sturdy and its cheap, keep one in your tool box for when you get to the window-sealing stage.

8 – 28mm Broadfix Mixed Packers

We recommend you grab some of our bags of 28mm Mixed Glazing Packers (120 in a bag). The bag contains an assortment of 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm glazing packers. As you already know, packers are an important part to installing windows professionally and carry and spread the load of the glazed unit and provide drainage and ventilation.

9 – Expanding Foam Tape 33 x 25mm

An impregnated self-adhesive foam tape, which when compressed to 20% of its expanded thickness, provides a weather seal. When placed in position, the strip expands to fill the gap; creating the perfect seal. This tape expands to 33mm thick from approximately 6mm thick.

Roof lights

We have two main types of rooflights on offer, both of which bring in a massive amount of extra natural light into a space. The Lantern Rooflight and The Flat Glass Rooflight.

Our Lantern Rooflight is a stylishly versatile roof glazing solution which looks at home in both traditional and modern settings. The slim roof bars, only 57mm wide, are a big attraction to builders and developers who are trying to achieve a sleek finish for their clients.

The Edgesky™ Lantern has a subtle ogee detail on its bars which, when coupled with the fully concealed fixings, creates a clean and classic appeal. Lantern rooflights just look good, from inside and out.

The quality materials and manufacturing processes of the Flat Glass Rooflight, allow it to achieve an overall U Value of 1.3 w/m2k due to its laminated and shatter-proof triple glazing which comes as standard.

Like the lantern, the flat rooflight also boasts an incredibly simple installation, with hidden strap fixing, an internal plasterboard pocket for easy boarding and plastering.

Our EDGEsky roof lantern is an increasingly popular structure of rooflight that is largely installed in flat roof extensions. Often referred to as sky lanterns or roof windows, our lanterns are frequently chosen due to their classic, sleek design – which adds a sense of sophistication to any project. Roof lanterns make a perfect statement in a space, whilst bringing in tonnes of natural light and making rooms feel bigger. In this blog, we’ll look at the specification, previous installations and testimonials of the EdgeSky Roof Lantern.

Specification

The EdgeSky Roof Lantern is of the highest quality and designed to fit simply to a pre-formed weathered upstand on the roof. With a fixed pitch of 25 degrees, we can manufacture them in any size up to 4000x 6000mm, in matt grey, matt black or gloss white (with other RAL colours available on special order). Roof lanterns are an excellent choice if there is a need for a much larger roof glazing system to bring in a maximum flow of daylight.

Although roof lanterns have aluminium glazing bars that provide support and create the look of a ‘lantern’, our roof bars are slim at only 57mm wide – some of the slimmest on the market – and this appeals to homeowners looking for a sleek finish with less obstruction to the sky.  Because we aim to give builders (and ultimately homeowners) choice, we also offer the addition of extra bars to the lantern if a more traditional look is required. Our EDGEsky roof lantern provides a clean, contemporary finish and structural elegance throughout.

Rainwater and drainage solutions this Winter

As the weather becomes colder and the days are shorter, it’s important to ensure that rainwater and drainage outlets on properties are up to the task of dealing with the increased rainfall and the drop in temperature. November 2022 has been a particularly harsh month for rainfall, and this period of such heavy rain will have been tough on drainage systems.

But do homeowners understand what their options are in terms of preventing any damage that might be caused by harsh weather throughout the year?

In this blog, we will look at the impact of not preventing water damage to property, and some of the best options for rainwater and drainage solutions to minimise the chances of this damage.

The importance of rainwater and drainage solutions

One of the most important things that home-owners can do to protect their property from the UK’s unpredictable weather, is for them to make sure that they have the appropriate rainwater and drainage solutions in place. This includes ensuring that their gutters and downpipes are in good condition.

Gutters may not be a glamourous subject when it comes to homeownership, but they really do play an important role in the maintenance and upkeep of a building.  Guttering that is not maintained, and instead becomes clogged with leaves, moss and debris from the roof, can cause severe issues.

When rain-water cascades off the roof and into a clogged gutter (or no gutter at all), it leaves no route for the water to travel and will then overflow rather than flowing into the downpipes and into the drainage system below. It will then pour down the walls and onto the ground.   If water is allowed to pool around the foundation of the property, it can then seep into cracks and cause untold damage.

This damage may just be to the general aesthetics or the surroundings of the property – the patio, lawn or flowerbeds below. The fascias or the paintwork of the property may also be effected, or the added moisture could encourage moss and mould to grow on the exterior. In worse case scenarios, the rainwater could cause erosion around the house and effect the foundations of the property.

Water damage is one of the most serious threats to home foundations, and if left unchecked, it can cause major structural damage, and in extreme cases, it can lead to total collapse. Whilst this is rare, taking steps to prevent water damage by implementing proper drainage around the perimeter of the property, will minimise the chances of any damage at all, and will ensure the foundations of the building are protected.

Gutters and Downpipes

Installing robust gutters and downpipes  around the roofline of all property will play a vital role in collecting water and channelling it elsewhere. It can be sent to a drain below or simply, and effectively, collected into a water butt for use in the summer months when there is less rainfall. Guttering isn’t essential around the entire house, but is imperative on the downslope of the property.

Regular cleaning of gutters and downpipes is the best way to prevent problems from occurring, but it is a relatively simple task that is often overlooked. Replacing damaged guttering is also essential. If left cracked and in disrepair, the water will seep through the cracks, down the walls and to the ground below.

At Edge Building Products, we sell a range of rainwater & drainage solutions including both domestic & industrial PVC guttering and more traditional steel, cast iron style, and aluminium guttering.

When it comes to durability, both metal guttering and PVC guttering can last for decades,  with PVC gutters perhaps needing to be replaced a few years before aluminium guttering would. For houses that are more exposed to the elements, metal guttering may be more suitable as steel, iron and aluminium will be able to withstand extreme weather conditions such as high winds and heavy snowfall.   On the other hand, PVC guttering is much simpler to install, and is considerably cheaper. Please do ask us for advice on which guttering might be more suitable for your clients’ needs.

In addition to providing the guttering and downpipes themselves, Edge sell rainwater accessories in a variety of sizes, including gutter balloons, which are installed over the pipe outlets in the gutter to prevent leaves from blocking the downpipes, and gutter guards which can simply clip together and fit in either round or square guttering. Our Gutter brushes (which are sometimes known as ‘hedgehogs’ due to their prickly appearance) are a cost-effective solution for guttering and can be simply laid into the gutter. The bristles stop any leaves building up and causing blockages and although the guttering will still need clearing and cleaning, blockages are less likely.

In addition to these solutions, Edge can help with the appropriate screws, brackets and rainwater adaptors, ensuring everything needed for a property’s drainage can be sourced from one centralised place.

Ensuring that homeowners are aware of rainwater and drainage options will mean their properties are up to the task of dealing with the increased rainwater this winter. Cold and wet weather can be tough on drainage systems, so it’s important that your clients are aware of the options for preventing any damage, rather than trying to deal with the effects thereafter.

Introduction to roof glazing systems

Several years ago, if we referred to ‘glazing systems’, it might have been assumed that we were talking about windows only, but with PVC increasingly being the material of choice for window frames, there has also been a growth in popularity of roof glazing systems. Roof glazing systems are structures typically composed of one or more panels, held together by a frame, and used on the roof of a building to allow natural light to flood into a room.

In addition to letting in light, the benefits of roof glazing systems include the obvious one – providing protection from the elements, but they also offer improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, and UV protection. They can also help to increase the value of a property.

There are a variety of products that fall under this category of ‘roof glazing systems’, including skylights, roof lanterns, conservatories and lean-tos. Each of these products has its own unique benefits and can be used in a variety of ways to achieve the desired results.

Rooflights (often referred to as ‘skylights’), for example, are used to provide an unobstructed view of the sky, while roof lanterns are a glass structure which are mostly installed on flat roofs. By very definition of the word, roof lanterns have a stylish ‘lantern’ effect due to the slim roof bars that make up the structure.

No matter what the homeowner’s specific needs may be, there is a roof glazing system that can help achieve their desired look.

At Edge Building Products we sell both flat glass rooflights and aluminium roof lanterns, two of the most popular types of roof glazing systems. In this blog, we will look at the benefits of both these structures so that you are able to guide your clients towards a solution that most suits them.

Flat Glass Roof Lights

A roof light is typically installed within the slope of a roof and allows rainwater to glide off. Our Edgesky Flat Glass Rooflight is a practical and simple, yet effective, addition to an extension or an existing room, and allows unobstructed natural light to flow into the room. Our rooflight is produced in Anthracite Grey, a contemporary colour which is often a popular choice with modern interiors, but its versatility means it really could be used in any period of house. We also offer other RAL colours for the rooflight structure, upon request and we can also manufacture these high quality rooflights to any size needed, including multi pane rooflights with glass rafters.

For homeowners who are looking to improve energy efficiency, rooflights have the added advantage of not only letting the sunlight in during the day, but also trapping heat in at night. This of course can really help with reducing energy costs and ultimately lowering the household’s carbon footprint.

At Edge Building Products we also offer the option of having an electric opener with our flat glass rooflight. This is a good option for larger rooflights that are installed in south facing rooms that become particularly warm in the summer.

Roof Lanterns

A roof lantern is an increasingly popular structure of skylight that is mostly installed in the flat ceilings of buildings. Roof lanterns are also referred to as sky-lanterns and are often chosen because of their ‘wow factor’…. they are not designed to be hidden and are often installed as a statement piece in a room, mostly in the centre. A roof lantern will also add room height and will often result in even the smallest and darkest of rooms feeling brighter and much more spacious.

Our EdgeSky Roof Lantern is of the highest quality and designed to fit simply to a pre-formed weathered upstand on the roof. With a fixed pitch of 25 degrees, we can manufacture them in any size up to 4000x 6000mm, in matt grey, matt black or gloss white (with other RAL colours available on special order). Roof lanterns are an excellent alternative to a skylight if there is a need for a much larger roof glazing system to bring in a maximum flow of daylight.

Although roof lanterns have aluminium glazing bars that provide support and therefore create the look of a ‘lantern’, our roof bars are slim at only 57mm wide – some of the slimmest on the market – and this appeals to homeowners looking for a sleek finish with less obstruction to the sky.  Because we aim to give builders (and ultimately homeowners) choice, we also offer the addition of extra bars to the lantern if a more traditional look is required.    Our EDGESky roof lantern provides a clean, contemporary finish and structural elegance throughout, and this is why it remains hugely popular.

Keeping your roof glazing systems clean

Whilst roof lanterns and skylights are a fantastic addition to any building, we are often asked if our products come with self-cleaning glass.

The answer is yes, they do.  Self-cleaning glass is treated with a special coating that helps to repel water and dirt, and because roof glazing systems are often not easily accessible, it is an important feature when considering which lantern or skylight to choose.

The self-cleaning coating also helps to break down organic contaminants when exposed to sunlight, and as a result, the glass stays cleaner for longer and is much easier to then maintain than traditional glass. In summary, there are several benefits of self-cleaning glass, including helping to reduce the amount of time and effort required to clean the glass, keeping the glass looking cleaner and newer for longer, and of course saving money on cleaning costs in the long run.

Self-cleaning glass is an ideal solution for busy homeowners and businesses, and all our roof lanterns and skylights come with self-cleaning glass as standard.

Bi-fold doors have massively risen in popularity in the last few years, with many house owners wanting to create a more light open-plan and airy feel to their homes and provide larger openings for entering the great outdoors.

Choosing the ideal bi-fold doors with the style and specification to suit the needs of the property and its surroundings is critical to any building project. In this blog, we’ve provided a guide to bi-fold doors and all the features you should consider when looking to purchase for your project.

Bi-fold doors are made up of at least two door panels which, when opened, fold back against themselves in a ‘concertina style.’  The panels are joined by heavy-duty hinges and run along a top and bottom track using a sturdy carriage mechanism.

Benefits of installing bi-fold doors

Pros of bi-fold doors

A couple of important considerations when looking to purchase Bi-folds is that they need space to stack inside or outside the home once folded. Also, having a high number of panes (door leaves) in bi-fold sliding doors can impede on the view of the outdoors – so its best to keep the amount of leaves to a minimum for the space you have to install the doors.

Configurations

There is a wide range of options when configuring the perfect bi-fold door. We’ll be able to design the door to ensure that there is space for the bi-fold leaves to slide stack when folded, and the correct amount of panes to maximise the view of outdoors, bringing in as much natural light as possible.

There is also the option to add a traffic door, for projects when you know you will not always want to fully open the door set. This means that only one pane will open, just like a standard door – and the rest of the panes will act as part of the wall, remaining closed and sealed.

Marine grade

If you live near the sea, or on the seafront – it is important to get your bi-fold doors marine graded, this will ensure that the salty sea air does not wear away at the metals and cause rusting and malfunctioning door hardware. Marine grading is also important for the energy performance and sealing of doors that are installed in properties close to the sea.

If you’d like some more information on our range of bi-fold doors, pop an email to [email protected] or give us a call on 03450213333. November Installation of the Month – ANS Global

We’re delighted to award ANS Global our November Installation of the Month. They installed 240m of square black guttering into their stunning living wall at the Microsoft Offices, in the Cambridge Science Park. This impressive biophilic feature brings an element of nature into Microsoft’s commercial office environment.

This natural wall is 11 metres high – 33 square metres in total – and required a scissor lift to install the wall modules, irrigation pipes and maintenance. ANS installed guttering behind their living walls to catch the water runoff, and they chose Edge specifically because our guttering is easy to install and ensures a good seal at the joins.

This project took the ANS team two weeks to install, and we are told that the project went very well – with the installation team playing a big role in ensuring the project ran smoothly from start to finish.

Incorporating biophilic design into workspaces is becoming more and more popular nowadays. Not only does greenery satisfy our innate desire to be surrounded by nature, but it also helps to absorb noise, removes carbon dioxide from the air, and helps improve happiness and overall productivity of the workforce.

In a recent blog  ANS said: “In a modern building there is often a lack of colour, a lack of inspiration, and a lack of nature.  But with plenty of unused wall space, there is huge opportunity to fill what is lacking in terms of natural connection”.

ANS were delighted with the service they received from us and said the Edge team were “lovely people, friendly and nice to deal with”. Thank you ANS!

So, big congratulations to ANS Global, we are always excited to supply innovative projects like this, and we look forward to seeing more of their work in the future.

If you are considering a front door upgrade or unsure about the right style and security solution for a new property, then we have the answer. When it comes to the very best in style and security, we recommend the composite door!

In this blog, we’ll show you why composite doors are the best choice to install in new builds, renovations or even to replace your current door if it has seen better days.

About Composite doors

Composite doors have risen in popularity in recent years and are a brilliant choice for anyone wanting to upgrade the external doors of their home.

These doors are designed to give properties greater security and thermal superiority. They feature a solid core made with 16 layers of laminated veneered timber called Kerto® and other high-endurance materials that are compressed under high-pressure conditions. In using sixteen layers of lamination, the grain runs in multiple directions and provides increased strength and rigidity. In traditional wood, the grain can often be the leading cause of warping or splitting.

Composite doors are thicker, stronger and easier to maintain over time than other materials – meaning your home or project is future-proofed and utilises the best materials for the job.  Another big bonus is the ability to choose the colour or finish that suits the environment best, without the need for painting and maintenance. Each composite door comes with two robust coloured PVCu skins that give the flexibility to make any designer happy with the end result.

Composite Doors | Durable, Stylish, Secure

Composite doors come complete with a Sculptured frame (Chamfered is available on request) in a choice of 22 coloured foils as well as plain white or cream. There are also the options of a 57mm low PVCu threshold instead of the normal 77mm as well as a 24mm aluminium which can also have wheelchair ramps fitted.

Timber is naturally renewable, and the timber in our composite is sourced from sustainably managed forests and can be recycled at the end of its useful life and not destined for landfill.

Keeping a roofline watertight is an important part of protecting any home or building. When completing any big project, the fascias and soffits shouldn’t be overlooked, as they form a crucial part of home’s structure. Here at Edge, we believe it is crucial to choose the right fascia material for your client’s needs. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of choosing either a PVC or timber fascia.

Why a quality roofline is important.

Not only do fascias and soffits give the roofline it’s finished appearance, but they also have a practical purpose too. These boards prevent rainwater and debris from entering the loft space and creating leaks inside the home. While fascias are not required to uphold the structure of the roof, they help to extend its lifespan by providing additional protection against harsh weather. Choosing the right fascias can therefore support the functionality of the rooftiles and guttering.

Looking to source guttering for your project? Check out our great ranges of PVC, steel, and aluminium rainwater systems today.

 Timber Fascias vs PVC Fascias

PVC vs Wood: Durability & Maintenance

Durability is one of the most important factors when sourcing materials for a project. Providing a long-lasting, high-quality finish for your customers is the perfect way to build up those 5-star reviews and become a trusted tradesperson in your local area.

Timber fascias have remained a popular choice as it is a naturally strong material. When well-maintained, timber fascias can last around 20-25 years. However, it is crucial that this maintenance is carried out. Untreated wood will only last around 10 years, and is highly suspectable to weathering, rot, and splintering. If your customer wants to ‘fit and forget’, then wooden fascias are not the best choice.

PVC is a strong and durable material, making it a great choice for roofline products. While PVC can sometimes initially cost more than timber boards, the PVC fascias do not require painting, staining or sealing. This means that there are no further costs associated with these boards, and they will last for approximately 20-30 years. All the homeowners will need to do is give the boards a clean yearly to keep them looking their best.

PVC vs Wood: Style and Customisation Options

Homeowners, whether commissioning a new build or undertaking a home renovation project, are always looking to create a stylish yet practical house. While images of fascias and soffits may not be at the top of their Pinterest boards, we know that the right finish can complete a home.

Wooden fascias and soffits offer a classic look to a home, especially one with more classic features. Period properties in particularly often benefit from the look of wooden fascias. Alternatively, they can blend seamlessly into cabins and other wooden structures. These timber boards can also be painted to suit the colour palette of the house.

However, with a PVC fascias customers can select the exact finish of wood they love and still enjoy all the benefits of a PVC product. From foiled boards to dyed plastics, there is a wealth of choice available to customers looking to renovate their home. Here at Edge, we offer fascias in 15 different colours and in 4 different finishes. Homeowners can enjoy the classic beauty of a Rosewood or Irish Oak fascia without needing to seal, paint, or check it for wood-rot. PVC fascias offer the best in both customisation and reliability.

Looking for a unique colour or finish? Call us on 0345 021 3333 and we’ll be happy to help you source the fascias you need.

PVC vs Wood: Sustainability & Environmental Impact

As a builder or contractor, it is important to make sure that the materials you are purchasing are sustainable or come from sustainable sources. Often, this means making sure that the product can be properly recycled or disposed of at the end of its life.

Distributers of wooden products should make the environmental accreditation of the wood clear and indicate whether it has come from a sustainable source. As wood is a naturally occurring, it is arguably a sustainable and environmentally friendly building material when cultivated in a responsible way. Damaged or rotting wood can also be disposed of in green waste to decay naturally.

Manufacturers of PVC should also make it clear what their environmental policy is. The great lifespan of PVC products, and the fact that no additional chemicals are required to maintain the boards, does increase its sustainability. PVC products should be responsibility recycled at the end of their use to ensure that no unnecessary waste is being sent to landfill.

Final Verdict…

Although timber fascias do play an important role in some construction projects, here at Edge we believe that PVC is best choice for most homeowners and commercial properties. This is because unlike wooden beams, PVC fascias are lightweight and easy to install. Plus, once they have been installed, they only require a wipe with soapy water to stay looking their best. PVC offers the best in terms of colour and style options, mimicking the look of classic wooden beams while offering a low maintenance finish.

Freefoam’s diverse cladding range is a popular choice for long-term stockist Edge Building Products and its customers. The company has seen a robust increase in sales of Freefoam’s products over the past four years.

Edge Building Products was established more than 25 years ago and sells a wide range of low-maintenance building products across its three branches. It added Freefoam’s cladding range to its offering in 2017, in response to customer demand for a greater range of colours in the cladding market.

Edge Building Products Managing Director Kieran Napthine rates Freefoam’s cladding range, colours and product innovation as “excellent”. He says: “We were attracted to Freefoam’s Fortex range because of its diverse colour options and the excellent range of trims that are included in the system. From our customer sales, we see the strongest demand for grey colours.

“The system is so easy to use and install. It is easy to cut, and handles much better than fibre cement products, which have a similar appearance.

Since Freefoam’s introduction, sales of the brand’s products have been growing for Edge Building Products. This is, in part, due to the expanding home improvement market, which has been going from strength to strength.

Edge Building Products mostly supplies Freefoam cladding products to builders, homeowners, for home improvement projects, and double-glazing companies. It has also supplied several new build properties, with excellent results.

Kieran says: “We have definitely seen an uptick in home improvements over the past year. We believe many people are investing funds they would normally allocate to holidays and hospitality to improve their homes.

“The ‘New England’ style is very popular with homeowners, particularly in the South, and Freefoam’s Fortex cladding range is a great fit for this style of property. It provides a cost-effective, low-maintenance option for anyone looking to make long-lasting, attractive changes to their property.”

Aluminium Lantern Rooflight

Our September Installation of the Month Award goes to Russell Harding and his fantastic renovation of this beautiful family home in West Sussex. The project involved a single-storey orangery style extension, including installation of a stylish roof glazing system and decorative fascia boards to give this property a fantastic renovation.

Roof Lantern Installation

The large white aluminium EdgeSky roof lantern, brings a feeling of space and light into the expansive new space. Two manually opening vents help with temperature control and air-flow, whilst the external ball finials give this contemporary glazing system a more traditional feel, which is in keeping with the overall property style.

Traditional Orangery Extension

Ogee fascia was installed into the project to give the roofline a more decorative and ornate finish. Matching the colour of the timber french doors, this beautiful fascia also compliments the style of the overall property.

So, we’d like to say a huge congratulations to Russell Harding Carpentry, for this fantastic project. We look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

There are quite a few types of cladding design, and many different ways to install them – but, like most traditional building supplies and methods, there must have been a practical reason behind each design and installation technique when it was invented. In this blog, we’ll explore the history of shiplap cladding and delve into our own cladding range at Edge.

What is Shiplap cladding?

Shiplap cladding is a traditional cladding design with a smooth or woodgrain finish, installed with and an overlapping or interlocking edge detail, producing a watertight façade. What differentiates shiplap cladding from other cladding types is a wide scoop-like ridge on the top edge of each board instead of a shadow gap, which both open V and tongue and grove cladding have.

History and Origin

History of Shiplap Cladding

What was shiplap originally used for?

Shiplap, as the name suggests, was originally used to build the sides of a ship. In fact, it is suggested that it was used incredibly early on in naval architecture, due to its waterproof and resilient qualities. The Viking ships that invaded Europe are said to have been clinker built, (boat building using shiplap techniques) and so were the ships that William the Conqueror used to invade Britain in the 11th century.

An ancient boat (dates from around AD 300) is said to have been found in Als, Denmark more than 100 years ago and is the earliest discovered example of clinker construction that uses overlapping planks, which were then called lapstrakes. These were a precursor to shiplap cladding, but they created a watertight seal and were installed using the same techniques as shiplap cladding is today.

It’s pretty obvious now that shiplap weatherboard cladding is used on our homes to protect them from rainfall and other damaging weather conditions. Although, these days cladding is often chosen for the sole purpose of improving the aesthetics of a property – it still plays a major part in defending our homes against the elements.

Where is best to install shiplap cladding?

fortex cladding installation

Shiplap cladding can be installed almost anywhere. It is ideal for installing on house exteriors, garden sheds and outbuildings, schools, beach huts, holiday homes and commercial or industrial buildings. Whilst it is normally installed horizontally, there are ways to install shiplap vertically too.

Our shiplap Range

Our robust PVC shiplap cladding profiles are made to suit traditional styles, but with complementary joints, trims, and fixings. King and Drury

We are delighted to announce our first Installer of the Month for their contemporary and innovative new build development in Midhurst, West Sussex – King and Drury Construction.

Installer of the Month is a new initiative which recognises and celebrates inspirational and forward-thinking projects which our customers have been working on.

In April, King and Drury were selected as deserving of the title. Their West Sussex project was a 12 month collaborative design process between MH Architects and the Southdowns National Park, which resulted in 4 striking townhouses. The properties are a showcase of contemporary design, within a traditional location – celebrating the architectural language of our time with sharp zinc roofs and angular shaped glazing.

King and Drury

We were lucky enough to supply aluminium windows, doors and bi-folds in Pale Brown (RAL colour 8025), which King & Drury installed to perfection. It’s fantastic to see how these glazing designs have been used to style the property whilst simultaneously creating an area of light, airy space internally.

Founded by James King and James Drury, King and Drury are award-winning property developers known for building high-end homes in hand-picked locations. We’re delighted to award Installer of the Month to this fantastic, progressive business and look forward to supplying for their projects in the future.

Government restrictions are starting to ease but the construction sector is still feeling the effects of the pandemic.

With the home improvement market booming after a year of reduced consumer spend, home owners have saved on meals out and holidays abroad, which means they are able to embark on those renovation projects they have been putting off. However, the demand fuelled by the booming domestic housing market, coupled with COVID and Brexit related materials delays, means prices are increasing and the supply chain is under more pressure than ever before.

Retailers are adapting to these unprecedented market conditions and are working hard to support their customers as best they can. South-East based business Edge Building Products are no exception. They have tackled the materials shortage by increasing order volumes and holding more products in-stock to avoid those longer lead times. They are committed to supporting their customer’s businesses and refining their buying strategy to meet the demand.

Kieran Napthine, Managing Director at Edge Building Products says, “The demand in the home improvement sector is fantastic. We’re seeing growth across all of our lines and the business is growing as a result, but we’ve had to adapt to this new market quickly to ensure we can still access the products we need.”

He continued, “Our main focus is the customer, and supporting their business. If the trade can’t get access to the products and materials they need, they can’t complete their project on time, which reflects poorly on their business.”

“To give our customers more confidence, we have reviewed our buying strategy and now hold more products in-stock to avoid long lead times. On top of this, we’ve invested more in marketing, to make sure our products are accessible and visible to new customers struggling to access the materials they need.”

“We know this year is going to continue to be a challenging one, as demand continues to surge and material prices increase, but we’re doing our very best to remain competitively priced and maintain high stock levels with as little disruption to our customers as possible”.

Cladding

Cladding is a great way to bring character to the exterior of any project. Whether your customer is looking to create a seaside look, Scandinavian hygge or contemporary style; cladding is compatible with most designs.

With a surge in demand for home offices, summer house construction and home renovation – requests for external cladding have rocketed. People are spending more time at home, with more money in their pockets after not paying out for holidays and entertainment for over a year. Home improvements are at the top of the homeowners agenda, with many stating that they will be staying at home long after lockdown has eased.

What are the benefits of external cladding?

Cladding is a low maintenance, external styling solution. Its durability provides protection from the elements, whilst making buildings more resistant to defects caused by rainfall, sunlight and temperature change. Cladding also improves the structural strength of the building.

What type of cladding does Edge Building Products sell?

Edge Building Products holds a vast range of external shiplap and open V cladding systems. From PVC Fortex cladding, to Cembrit – Fibre cement cladding – there will be something to suit your project. Edge also supplies the cladding trims, necessary installation tools and guides, with a great team of customer service staff that are on hand with advice.

The cladding crisis, which stemmed from the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, means building control are anxious to ensure that all buildings are cladded with safe, fire resistant or non-combustible cladding. Edge Building Products supplies the non-combustible Cembrit Fibre cement cladding, Fire Rating Class A2 – while the Fortex cladding range has been tested to EN 13501-1, achieving D, S3 and D2 fire rating.

We have some handy cladding tools on our website, which you might find useful.

flat roof vs skylight

An Overview

At Edge Building Products, our EDGEsky rooflight range comprises aluminium roof lanterns and flat glass rooflights. These come in a range of stocked sizes and can also be made to measure – with standard and special colour options.

Why choose Edgesky Rooflights?

One of the main benefits of having rooflights is the incredible amount of natural light they bring into a space. Not only does this make the space more appealing – bringing out the true colours of internal décor – it also can save on electricity costs for lighting.

Styles complemented by Flat Glass Roof Lights

Our flat glass rooflight design is very minimal, and we find that it suits the more contemporary spaces. We have seen some great installations of these in art-deco style properties, sometimes in a dining room, bringing masses of natural light to the table (literally), or in a bedroom – acting as a window to the stars. This rooflight is so simplistic and versatile; you’ll find that it can work in most spaces, whatever the style!

Where to put a lantern rooflight

A roof lantern skylight is an ideal statement for a traditional-style space. The option to add finials and extra bars to the frame brings a classic dimension, and, when installed on a flat roof, can make a massive difference to the exterior character of your property. However, a slimmer framed lantern and no finials will give you a more contemporary feel, bringing some minimalist structure to your roof. We like to think of roof lanterns as a conservatory roof, without so much heat loss – bringing in plenty of natural light, but without the conservatory sides creating a less thermally efficient space.

Which rooflight is best for you?

So, to round it up – our range of rooflights will easily cover your style and practical needs. For the minimal, modern look; check out our flat glass rooflights. If you are going for a traditional, classic look – our lantern rooflights are just what you need. If you’re still not sure which one would be the best choice, feel free to get in touch with our team. We’re happy to provide you with further information on our Edgesky products that could help you to choose the perfect rooflight.

Home renovation during covid has been one of the main go-to occupations for residents stuck in their homes. Here, we cover the most popular home improvement trends that we’ve seen and supplied.

1. The Home Office

The number one trend we’ve observed is the home office. Many people who have said they will not be going back into the office in the long term have built office rooms in their gardens to get away from the main house and its distractions during the working day. This, in turn, has left the original indoor study spaces vacant, as devices and office essentials move outdoors. Residents make the most of these spaces that have been vacated indoors, often by creating extra lounging areas or creative zones in the home.

2. Home extensions

Next up, we have found that home extensions are becoming more and more frequent. Again, due to covid keeping us all in our homes, the need to create more space to live in has been at the forefront of our minds. We are loving the extension photographed below; with the fantastic flush casement windows and doors and classic coving.

House image

3. Garages

Another of the latest home renovation trends is a garage conversion. With leisure and entertainment being closed in the last few months, many homeowners have converted their garages into gyms, bars, cinemas and studios.

4. Loft conversions

People that don’t have much garden space for extensions may go for the loft conversion project. These are a great way of adding another bedroom or some more storage space to the property and is said to add up to 20% to the value of a home.

5. Refurbishments

Having a little more time on our hands while being at home has made us aware of the need for improvement in some areas. Whether it’s a bit of chipped paint, a run-down patio, or some rotting wooden windows – most people have found fault somewhere. Some chose to change the glazing in their houses as having new windows fitted can change the whole look of the property. Others want to change the whole frontage of their homes, using cladding or paint. We have also noticed that many homeowners have been improving their gardens, especially outdoor eating areas, by installing decking and outdoor kitchens. We really liked the refurbishment project photographed below, with our Fortex cladding, fascias, soffits and Liniar windows.

What’s your next project?

The home improvements market has rocketed over the last few months. Homeowners are clearly making more of an effort to neaten up their properties and create larger living spaces – making them more enjoyable to live in. People have also had more time to put their home renovation ideas to practice, giving them a project to occupy them during lockdown periods.
